Senior citizens can meet face-to-face
again–without masks required –at the
Obetz Community Center where hot
lunches are served twice a week and
laughter can be heard from game tables
throughout Stewart Hall.
“We reopened for senior lunches on
June 3,” said coordinator Mel Ross, who
kept the center’s home lunch delivery
program up and running while older residents
were confined to the four walls of
their homes when the center shut down
due to the coronavirus pandemic on
Lockbourne to enhance
trails and is also working
to preserve its past
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The village of Lockbourne is working on
projects that enhance the present and
embrace the past.
Walking trails
According to Lockbourne Mayor
Christie Ward, the village of Lockbourne
will receive $100,000 from the State
Capital Budget to install a bridge to connect
the walking paths and signage along
the village’s trails.
“The Magnolia Trail consists of two
loops that is just over two miles in length,”
said Ward. “The trail is named after one of
the canal boats owned by William
Moneypenny who had a distillery in town,
which produced 100 barrels of whiskey a
day during the canal days.”
She said the “Maine” loop (named after
the last canal boat that came through
Lockbourne) is located at Locke Meadow
Park.
“Walkers can connect to the ‘Nye’ loop
(named after Pearl Nye, who was a famous
canal song writer and lived in Lockbourne)
at the east end of the trail,” said Ward.
“The goal is to connect the trail to the third
loop (not open at this time), located along
the towpath on the south side of Rowe
Road. We anticipate the ‘Showboat’ loop
(named after the canal boat that took
entertainers town to town), which currently
ends at the Big Walnut Creek in
Pickaway County, would then extend to
Lock 31 at Millport and on into Circleville.
We also plan to connect the trail west to
Groveport. This would connect the communities
along the Ohio’s Southern Descent
Canal Partners.”
The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail, Inc.,
and its partner communities announced
the development of the new Ohio and Erie
Canal Southern Descent Heritage Trail
from Buckeye Lake to Portsmouth.
The 114 mile driving trail begins at the
southern edge of Buckeye Lake in Fairfield
County. It includes Bibler lock 8 in
Baltimore; locks 11, 12, and 13 in
Lockville; lock 22 in Groveport; locks 26,
27, 29, and 30 in and near Lockbourne;
and remnants of the Columbus Feeder just
west of Lockbourne in Franklin County.
In Pickaway County the trail passes
lock 31 in Millport and includes Canal
Park in Circleville. In Scioto County the
trail continues south through Rushtown at
lock 48 and lock 50 in West Portsmouth
and ends at lock 55, west of downtown
Portsmouth at the Ohio River.
Once the trail has been established, residents
and visitors will be able to learn the
story of this important transportation
route as they follow the driving trail.
Creation of the trail, which is expected to
be launched this fall, is being funded by
the Canal Society of Ohio and Ohio
Humanities.
Old Schoolhouse renovations
The Old Schoolhouse, now named
Lockbourne Historical Hall, is located at
206 Vause St. in Lockbourne’s Town
Square.
“Renovations of the second floor are
underway at this time and are expected to
be complete by end of the year 2021,” said
Ward. “The next phase will be installing a
patio deck and handicap ramp in the back
of the building, as well as a transom above
the front door.”
Ward said long terms plans are to
install an elevator for access to the second
floor.
“The Hall will be available to rent for
events such as: weddings, receptions,
showers, reunions, meetings and conferences,
holiday parties and fundraisers,”
said Ward.
Bixby Road reconstruction
means drivers must use detours
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
Driving on west Bixby Road is going to be different
for a while.
A portion of west Bixby Road will be closed to
through traffic, beginning on or around July 19, for
approximately 60 days for road and culvert improvements.
This improvement is part of the west Bixby Road
reconstruction project, which is being done in two
phases by the city of Groveport in partnership with the
Franklin County Engineer’s office.
“The city’s Capital improvement plan includes the
reconstruction of Bixby Road under Phase 2, a continuation
of the 2017 Bixby Road Phase 1 project,” said
Groveport City Engineer Steve Farst. “The road condition
is poor and required rehabilitation. The culvert is
aged and due for replacement.”
The project begins at the entrance to the Madison
Christian School and extends east a distance of about
3,500 feet to the entrance to Three Creeks Metro Park.
Farst said the improvements will include road reconstruction
and paving, a shared-use path, and a new
culvert located near the Madison Christian Church
under Bixby Road.
“The road width is not being significantly widened,”
said Farst. “Work also includes a shared-use paved
path alongside the south side of the road that will connect
to the Bixby Road Three Creeks Metro Park
entrance.”
According to Farst, in 2019, the Franklin County
Engineer’s office contacted Groveport officials and
advised that an existing culvert carrying Hendron
Ditch was to be replaced by the county in 2021. The
city and county worked together to package that
improvement with the city’s Phase 2, Part 1 Bixby
Road improvement into a single bid package.
“The city is funding the road improvement while the
county is funding the culvert replacement,” said Farst,
who added a portion of the new culvert will be lengthened
a few feet to accommodate the shared use path,
which the city will partially fund.
Farst said funding for Part 1 is from a grant and
loan to the city from the Ohio Public Works
Commission, that combined are not to exceed $1.85
million.
The funding for Part 2 is funded by the Franklin
County Engineer’s office and from the Ohio Public
Works Commission funds for the portion of the culvert
carrying the shared-use path.
According to Farst, the total construction contract is
$1.5 million. Part 1 is $ 971,735 and Part 2 is $
The Columbus Metropolitan Library has fully
reopened most of its 23 locations following more than
a year of closures and service disruptions due to the
COVID-19 pandemic.
To celebrate, CML will hold a community open
house at each of its 22 open locations on Aug. 21. From
11 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can enjoy special programs,
activities and refreshments, plus enter raffles for
prizes.
CML’s Karl Road Branch is closed ahead of the
grand opening of the new branch later this summer.
Face coverings are no longer required for entry into
609,673.
Farst said the road handles about 3,000 vehicles a
day and, with future growth in the area, it’s expected
traffic will increase to 4,500 vehicles a day.
Detours
According to information from the city of Groveport,
during the project travelers should follow signed
detour routes. West Bixby Road will be closed between
its intersections with Hendron Road and Bixby Ridge
Drive East. Bixby Road will be closed to through traffic.
The address range of the closure is between 3393
Bixby Road and 4200 Bixby Road.
Emergency police and fire services, mail delivery,
and trash collection will continue throughout the duration
of the project within the construction zone. During
the project:
•Through traffic along Bixby Road will not be
allowed to pass through the construction zone, as the
bridge/culvert will be out.
•Access to properties west of Madison Christian
Church, 3565 Bixby Road, including visitors to the
church, shall approach from the west from Groveport
Road.
•Access to properties east of the railroad crossing
(located north of the church), shall be made from the
east, from State Route 317. These include the following
facilities/ addresses: Amsted Rail-Griffin Wheel, 3900
Bixby Road; Three Creeks Metro Park, 3860 Bixby
Road; AEP Dolan Center and AEP Training Center,
4100/4001 Bixby Road; and Living Skills Bixby Center,
4200 Bixby Road.
•Eastbound through-travelers should follow the
posted detour route that directs travelers to use
Groveport Road east to State Route 317, turning left
and going north toward the Bixby Road/State Route
317 intersection.
•Westbound and southbound through-travelers
should follow the posted detour route that directs travelers
use State Route 317 in a southerly direction,
turning right at Groveport Road and going west
toward the Bixby Road/Groveport Road intersection, to
access all properties located west of the Madison
Christian Church.
•All through-traffic should follow posted the detour
route and avoid the construction zone.
•Residents and visitors to local residences, businesses,
the Metro Parks, and the church/school, should
follow the above instructions for access to these properties.
•Dates are approximate and subject to change due
to weather or unforeseen construction issues.
Columbus Metropolitan Libraries re-open
CML locations, however unvaccinated individuals are
asked to continue to wear them. CML asks that customers
who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19,
or who recently tested positive for COVID-19, not
enter any CML buildings. Curbside pickup remains
available as well.
CML will continue to follow guidelines provided by
local, county and state health officials and the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. The safety of customers
and staff is a priority for the library. Follow
Groveport revises pool admittance policy
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The city of Groveport has made further revisions to its policies
regarding admittance to the Groveport Aquatic Center following
recent serious incidents at the pool.
On July 2, Groveport City Council approved limiting admission
to the pool to individuals and/or families who possess a resident or
non-resident seasonal pass. Day passes were eliminated.
However, on July 12, Groveport City Council approved restoring
the purchase and use of day passes to the pool for Groveport
residents.
Groveport residents are defined as those who live within the
city’s corporation limits.
The rules for the restoration of day passes are:
•Group rate 10 packs are not available the rest of the 2021 season.
•Group outings, defined as organized groups of six or more, are
not permitted.
•Groveport residents and up to five guests are eligible to purchase
day passes. The Groveport resident must accompany the
guests to the pool.
•Season pass holders and their guests are eligible to purchase
day passes and the season pass holder must accompany the guests
to the pool.
•Pre-purchased and pre-issued day passes may be used if the
above criteria are met.
•Persons who wish to use the Groveport Aquatic Center by
using day passes must first acquire a Groveport Recreation
Department issued identification card, which must then be presented
and scanned at the time of day pass payment and entry.
These identification cards are free to Groveport residents and will
Blood shortage continues: Red Cross needs donors
The American Red Cross continues to
experience a severe blood shortage and
donors of all blood types — especially type O
and those giving platelets — are urged to
make an appointment to give now.
The Red Cross needs to collect more
than 1,000 additional blood donations each
day to meet current demand as hospitals
respond to an unusually high number of
traumas and emergency room visits, organ
transplants and elective surgeries.
To thank donors who help this month,
all who come to give through July 31 will
receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card via
email and will also receive automatic entry
for a chance to win gas for a year (a $5,000
value). More information and details are
available at rcblood.org/fuel. Also, all those
who come to donate throughout the entire
month of July will be automatically
entered for a chance to win a trip for four
to Cedar Point or Knott’s Berry Farm. To
learn more, visit rcblood.org/CedarFair.
Schedule an appointment to give blood
by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App,
visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-
Canal St.
cost $2 to non-Groveport residents. The identification card is good
for two years.
•Groveport corporate residents are not eligible to buy a day
pass unless they are a guest of a Groveport resident or a season
pass holder.
•The recreation director, after consultation with the city
administrator, has the authority to change pool classifications,
rules, policies, and definitions as needed.
“This is a very good next step,” said Groveport City
Administrator B.J. King. “This holds people accountable. We’re
going to know who is in our facility. Other communities are following
our lead regarding their own pools.”
Other actions taken by the city to maintain safety at the pool
include raising the minimum age of individuals permitted in the
facility without a parent or legal guardian to age 14 (previously it
was age 10); security cameras are being installed including five in
and around the breezeway and another at the side gate near the
concession stand; and a police officer will be assigned to the pool
during specific times mandated by the police chief after consultation
with the mayor.
The actions were taken due to a recent serious of incidents
where lifeguards were attacked at the pool. On June 30 a group of
juveniles allegedly assaulted one of the pool’s lifeguards on the
pool deck, according to the Groveport Police. Four suspects were
identified and Groveport Law Director Kevin Shannon said
charges are expected to be filed against them.
In addition to the group of juveniles’ assault on the lifeguard,
Shannon said an intoxicated male also recently allegedly assaulted
a lifeguard by pushing the lifeguard into the pool. Charges are
expected to be filed against the suspect.
Success at the box office doesn’t always
mean a new property is going to receive a
sequel, but it is more probable if the film is
a part of the horror genre and it nets a nice
profit for the distribution studio.
Horror films are relatively inexpensive
to make. The studios cast little known
actors and employ up-and-coming directors
to keep costs down, and then challenge the
creative team to get inventive with their
small budget. They do this because not only
do they hold the purse, but they know fans
of the genre are loyal and will come out and
give just about any thriller a chance.
One such thriller that was given the
chance at the 2019 box office was “Escape
Room.” Working off the popularity of reallife
escape rooms that, allegedly, allow people
to bond through solving puzzles in
order to leave, its premise added a deadly
twist into the mix. While there was tension
throughout thanks to a great ensemble
cast, the impressive thing about that film
was the set design that saw burning rooms,
a frozen tundra, and floors that dropped
out from underneath trembling feet.
Filmed with a budget of $8 million, it
was no terrible loss for the studio if this
film did not profit as much as they would
have liked. However, it amassed a return of
more than $140 million throughout its theatrical
run, making it one of the year’s
biggest hits based on that ratio. With that
success in mind, it was no surprise that a
sequel would be, well, inescapable.
Though I do not often look forward to
sequels, I have to say I was looking forward
to seeing what else this world had to offer.
The Reel Deal
Dedra
Cordle
It teased
secret organizations
run by the
wealthy who set up
these games for
sport, but I was more
intrigued by the
prospect of retribution
against these creators as promised by
the final boy and final girl. After all, it is a
modern tale about David and Goliath, the
haves and the have nots, and the tormented
versus the tormentors. Perhaps I was
being too idealistic about where a film like
this could go, but nonetheless, I wanted to
see what “Tournament of Champions”
could bring to the horror table.
The successes of this film lay firmly at
the path of its predecessor. The sequel
builds a great cast of characters around the
survivors of the first and it comes equipped
with another fantastically fatalistic set
design that features electrified subway
trains, acid rain, and collapsing beaches.
But where this film runs into problems is
that it never tries to walk outside of that
path until it is late — so late you’ve grown
tired of the scenery and are agitated by the
people who asked you to come along for a
trip that was promised to be better.
When you realize this sequel is just a
rehash, it is enjoyable thanks to the
strength of the first couple acts. It begins
with final boy Ben (Logan Miller) and final
girl Zoey (Taylor Russell) trying to come to
terms with the terror that was inflicted
upon them in the first film. Ben has done
Look before you run
what most men do and is suffering in
silence while Zoey is more willing to share
her experiences with a therapist. Both
have a desire to find those responsible for
their escape room trauma.
They go to New York City because Zoey
believes she knows the headquarters of
Minos Escape Rooms Inc. When they arrive
they are lured into a sparsely filled train
car that is not what it seems. Realizing
they are in another deadly escape room,
they band together with a new group of
strangers and solve the clues to escape.
And here is where the film should have
branched off into its own thing somehow,
but it continues to follow the rules set up in
the original where if you make it through
one escape room, you go onto the next.
While the rooms are inventive, it gets to
the point where enough is enough despite
liking the thinly developed characters.
The thing with these escape rooms is
you never know where the end is, and I feel
the creators might not know that either. It
offers a new rule at the end and promises a
third installment, but, like the characters,
it’s hard to trust anything when you were
told one thing but given a different thing
altogether.
Though fans of the original, or those who
go in with little knowledge of its origins, will
likely find some enjoyment out of
“Tournament of Champions” you can’t help
but think it could have been better than just
the tired retread of a decent indie thriller.
Years ago I was asked by a member of
my local board of education to run for an
open school board seat. I politely declined.
No amount of flattery, coaxing or background
(having covered various boards for
decades) could persuade me.
My answer was simple. Although somewhat
knowledgeable about the district, I
had never attended a meeting of my own
local school board and did not feel qualified
to run for the position. Plus, most of my
work as a journalist takes place on Monday
nights, the same evening as the majority of
public meetings.
I have a long-held standard that a candidate
needs to know about the group or
organization for which they are running.
I have a list I use as a personal reference
when it comes to pursuing the heavy mantle
of public service:
•Have you regularly attended at least
one meeting a month in the last half year?
No, I have not been to a single one. Why
would someone who runs for office not take
the time to familiarize themselves with the
organization or municipality for which they
will be tasked with creating public policy
and/or managing public funds?
•Have you served on a committee that
answers directly to the organization within
the last two years?
No, I haven’t. I am
of the mindset that if
you see a problem,
work within the system
and create
change from within.
Don’t jump into the
fire without first
warming your feet.
Places
Linda
Dillman
•Are you familiar enough with the
organization that you could take on the
position, if elected, and not spend the first
few meetings playing catch-up with basic
policies and procedures?
Not really, but I’ve covered many other
school board meetings as part of my job. If
you don’t know how a public entity operates,
you should if you want to become a
member. Look online and do a little studying
before walking through the doors. And
while many things are the same there are
differences, both minor and major.
•Are you prepared to deal with off-theclock
problems that arise, the public calling
at all hours, having to deal with reporters
to discuss an issue, or lose a good portion of
your privacy during your time in office?
No. No. No and no.
•Are you running for public office for
altruistic reasons and because you feel you
are the best person for the job because of
your skills, interest in the community
and/or you perceive flaws in the system for
which you can offer plausible ideas?
This is more a case of answerable by
way of personal reflection and since I have
no intention of running for public office, it
did not apply. However, I can say that, in
my position as president of our high school
Alumni Association, I could answer yes to
all of the above if asked by a fellow alumni.
I applaud the work and countless hours
public service minded people spend doing
the people’s business. Do I disagree with
them? Sometimes, but that is the brilliant
concept of democracy at work.
My advice to people who want to run for
public office is simple.
Learn not only about the office, responsibility
and limitations of the position
itself, but also attend meetings in-person
before declaring your candidacy and learn
about the organization itself, its challenges,
present/future plans and projects
and its limitations by law.
You will not only be a better candidate,
but you will also be a better citizen as well.
WHY TOOTHPASTE?
Toothpaste not only helps our
teeth look brighter, it has other
helpful purposes. Toothpaste
typically contains a detergent
compound to penetrate and
loosen deposits and stains on
tooth surfaces so they can be
more easily removed during
toothbrushing.
Toothpaste also contains cleaning
and polishing agents to produce
a smooth, shiny surface that
can inhibit the accumulation and
retention of plaque. In addition,
flavoring agents found in toothpaste
can make the mouth and
breath feel clean. Toothpastes
containing fluoride can help
Dr. Kelly
strengthen the teeth’s outer layer
- the enamel - to help prevent
cavity formation.
Some toothpastes have tartarcontrol
properties to minimize
tartar (mineralized plaque)
buildup. Other have special tooth
whitening properties. Some help
reduce tooth sensitivity, and still
others have antimicrobial agents
to help control the bacteria
responsible for gum disease.
Hamilton Schools make administrative changes
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
While the faces are familiar, the positions
are changing for administrators in
buildings throughout the Hamilton Local
School District.
Here is a rundown of the changes
according to information from the
Hamilton Local Schools’ website:
•Dr. Josh Conley, who guided the elementary
school first under current
Superintendent Mark Tyler and then as
principal himself, is moving up a few
grades to the high school, where he will
start serving as principal on Aug. 1.
His district tenure started in 2002 as a
student teacher and middle school basketball
coach. In 2003 he was hired as an
intermediate school instructor and continued
coaching at the middle and high school
level.
He became the elementary school assistant
principal in 2007 and later earned his
doctorate from the Concordia University of
Chicago.
Tyler said Conley has proven himself to
be an instructional leader with great
knowledge in teaching and learning and
has a clear understanding of how to balance
building operations and works in constructive
ways to help make district-wide
improvements.
“I would like to sincerely thank the community
for their support and trust, as they
have been very good to me during my
almost 20 years within the Hamilton Local
School District,” said Conley. “I assure you
that I will continue to work tirelessly
toward instilling high expectations for all. I
am truly excited to join the Hamilton
Township High School team and look forward
to the many things I'm confident we
can accomplish by working together.”
Conley’s second in command is Matthew
O’Hearn, who previously served as the
high school’s dean of students. He assumes
full responsibilities as assistant principal
on Aug. 1, and started out with the district
as a high school social studies teacher in
2007.
•O’Hearn was an AP Government
teacher, Kids Voting Liaison, social studies
co-chair and head high school cross country
coach since 2014. He has also served as a
varsity assistant track and field coach
since 2009.
“Mr. O’Hearn has a charismatic and
calming personality that meshes well with
students throughout the district,” Tyler
said. “I have every confidence that Matt
will excel in this position, as it is easy to
trust and believe in him and follow his
leadership.”
O’Hearn said he can’t wait to hit the
ground running when it comes to establishing
positive relationships, working collaboratively
with others, and building leaders
amongst the staff and students.
“What a great opportunity to work with
the best administrators, staff, students,
coaches, secretaries, custodians and cooks
in central Ohio,” said O’Hearn, who earned
a master of education from The American
College of Education in 2014.
•Sara Tadak is moving from the intermediate
school to the principal’s position at
Hamilton Elementary School. She began
her career in 2002 as a first-grade teacher
at the elementary building. Tadak then
transitioned to the intermediate school
where she taught fourth grade reading and
fifth grade writing while earning her master
of education in Educational Leadership
from Ashland University.
“During my time at Hamilton Local
School District, I have witnessed tremendous
growth and progress in the district, as
well as the construction of all four buildings,”
said Tadak, who became the assistant
principal of the intermediate school in
2015. “I am excited and honored to have
the privilege to serve as principal of
Hamilton Elementary School.”
Tyler called Tadak an instructional
leader who has a great understanding of
curriculum, embraces data driven decision
making and has a passion and confidence
toward elementary academics.
•Jessica Wills, a math teacher and
administrative support at the high school
was named the new assistant principal for
Hamilton Intermediate School.
“Mrs. Wills has a phenomenal rapport
with students and their parents and
guardians,” said Tyler. “I have every confidence
that Jessica will excel in this position,
and I am pleased to add an educator
with her passion to the administrative
team.”
Wills was hired in 2009 and served at
the middle school as the math department
chair. In 2017, she transitioned to the high
school as a math instructor and also
worked as administrative support. In addition
to these responsibilities, she was a vertical
team member and a new teacher mentor.
Outside of the classroom, she was the
middle school track and field head coach
from 2010 to 2019, served as the athletic
department event manager and was the
Class of 2021 advisor.
Wills earned a master of education from
The Ohio State University in 2010 and a
Master of Education with a focus on school
leadership from Concordia University
Chicago in 2016.
“I am very excited to take on this leadership
role in our district,” said Wills. “I look
forward to working with our staff and community
to help all of our students achieve
academic and social growth.”
Cancer support groups
OhioHealth and Cancer Support
Community Central Ohio are partnering
on a free series of virtual support groups
for newly diagnosed cancer patients and
their families.
The six-week sessions will run six times
during 2021 and will cover a variety of topics
including:
•First Steps After You’re Diagnosed:
Learning a New Language
•Resources to Partner with Your
Healthcare Team
•Communicating with Your Family
Through Cancer
•Coping with Side Effects
•Proper Nutrition and Staying Active
•Managing the Emotions of Cancer
Participants are welcome to join the
group at any point and can join missed sessions
during another series. The groups are
led by a licensed social worker from Cancer
Support Community Central Ohio with the
support of an OhioHealth cancer nurse
navigator.
“We are thankful to Cancer Support
Community Central Ohio for partnering
with us to provide this important service to
our cancer patients,” said Lisa Ahonen,
OhioHealth system program director, supportive
cancer care. “Receiving a cancer
diagnosis is an emotional experience that
comes with many questions for the patient
and their family. Joining a support group,
such as this series, can help them find
answers and connect with people who are
experiencing the same thing they are.”
“We are pleased to be partnering with
OhioHealth to provide this series of support
and education programs for newly
diagnosed cancer patients and their families,”
said Bev Soult, president and CEO,
Cancer Support Community Central Ohio.
“The best cancer treatment combines medical
treatment with support and education
to help address with the emotional and
behavioral concerns that accompany a cancer
diagnosis. We applaud OhioHealth for
its commitment to delivering exceptional
care for cancer patients and their families
to achieve a better quality of life.”
The series is free, but those interested
in joining must register to get a secure
Zoom link for each event. Registration is
available by visiting
CW Hometown Day
The Canal Winchester Labor Day Committee is
making plans for a Hometown Day celebration scheduled
for Sept. 4 — a small, community event for the
entire family.
As was previously announced, the Canal
Winchester Labor Day Festival Board and Committee
made the decision to cancel the 2021 Labor Day festival,
originally scheduled for Sept. 4, 5, and 6. The
event, which was set to celebrate its centennial year in
2020, has been a Labor Day weekend mainstay in the
community since 1920. The group begins planning,
scheduling, and securing the many moving parts of the
annual festival in January. At that time this year,
communities were facing state-mandated COVID-19
event guidelines with attendance restrictions of 30 percent.
The three-day Labor Day festival brings almost
30,000 visitors to to Canal Wincheste and there was no
feasible way to control the crowd, according to organizers.
In addition to these restrictions, there were also
financial concerns. The annual event budget averages
$80,000 and the festival is solely funded by donations
and sponsorship.
Although the city of Canal Winchester provides considerable
support, including the use city property,
water and electric, and offers city staff for street closures
and cleanup, the festival is not a city sponsored
event.
Due to the effects the pandemic had on businesses,
the largest financial sponsors indicated they were
unable to support the event at the same level as previous
years.
Because the festival could not count on major
donors to support it this year, a three-day event was
ruled out.
Hometown Day will be a fun-filled celebration for
the entire community. The event will kick-off with a
parade at 11 a.m., full of street and neighborhood
floats and at least three marching bands.
High Street and Stradley Place will be filled with
children’s activities and food trucks, including Amish
Country Donuts, and musical acts such as Frankie &
Ranke and The Usual Suspects & Repeat Offenders.
Additional entertainment, including a special act for
www.columbusmessenger.com
children, are in the planning stages.
More details to follow as they become available.
The Canal Winchester Area Historical Society previously
announced it will hold its annual Ice Cream
Social on Sept. 5 from 1-4 p.m. at the Prentiss School at
10 W. Oak St.
Labor Day Festival organizers said they recognize
the importance of the annual three-day Labor Day festival
to the community and continue to plan for the
100th Labor Day weekend celebration in 2022.
Sound the Alarm
American Red Cross volunteers will Sound the
Alarm in Columbus as part of a national effort to educate
100,000 people about home fire safety in high-risk
neighborhoods this spring.
Columbus area residents are encouraged to call
844-207-4509 to request a virtual education appointment
and referral to partner agency for installation of
free smoke alarms.
“Home fires remain the most frequent disaster, yet
most of us don’t realize we have just two minutes to
safely escape,” said Cory Paul, executive director of the
Greater Columbus Ohio Chapter. “Our volunteers can
help residents create personal home fire escape plans
and provide them with the critical information they
need to protect themselves from these everyday disasters.”
Central Ohio residents are also encouraged to visit
SoundTheAlarm.org and pledge to prepare against
home fires.
This work is made possible thanks to financial
donations from Red Cross’ regional partners: American
Electric Power Foundation, Columbia Gas of Ohio,
Dayton Power & Light Foundation, Duke Energy, and
NetJets.
Sound the Alarm is part of the larger Home Fire
Campaign. Since launching the campaign in 2014, the
Red Cross has helped save 864 lives across the country
by helping families create escape plans and installing
free smoke alarms.
This work is made possible with Red Cross’ partners,
who have helped make more than 900,000 households
safer in at-risk communities.
pets of the week
Bessie is a sweet 6-year-old who is
heartworm positive and looking for a
home where she can relax while
going through treatment - which will
be handled by the county shelter.
Bessie will need a quiet home and, if
there are other dogs in the home,
they should be on the low-key, quieter
side as well. If you think you
might be able to support Bessie, visit the shelter and
spend some time with this friendly dog.
HYA parade in Hamilton Meadows
Members of the Rangers baseball team use water guns to help cool off the crowd
watching the HYA parade of floats and vehicles.
Messenger photos by Linda Dillman
Players from teams in an Obetz youth league also joined in the summer fun of the HYA
parade held on July 10 in Hamilton Meadows.
One of the team floats in the HYA parade took on a luau theme with the top designs
awarded for their efforts in a presentation at the park after the parade.
Players get ready to practice their aim
throwing candy to parade spectators.
Players from Obetz helped bystanders fill
grocery bags with candy tossed from
their float as they drove down the street.
