National
act heads
up Rock
the Clock
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
It has been five years since Tim Dawson,
owner of Pioneer Pizza, brought Rock
the Clock to Plain City. To celebrate the
milestone, he booked a national act as this
year’s event headliner.
Drew Parker, a country music songwriter
and performer, is traveling from
Nashville to the Rock the Clock stage where
he will close out the night’s festivities.
Parker has co-written songs for country
music stars Luke Combs and Jake Owen
and is a nominee for MusicRow magazine’s
“Discovery Artist of the Year” award.
“I am so, so excited to have Drew
Parker here and to have people hear him
play,” Dawson said.
Rock the Clock 2021 will take place on
July 31 in uptown Plain City. The event
features live music, food, drinks, and children’s
activities. Admission is free.
The opening act, Jacked Up, will perform
country rock from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Based in Columbus, the band serves up
dynamic vocals, driving rock, and mountain
soul and has shared the stage with
Luke Bryan, Craig Moran, Gretchen Wilson,
LeAnn Rimes and David Allen Coe,
to name a few.
Naked Karate Girls, whose band members
are neither naked or girls, are back
by popular demand. The high-energy, funloving
dance/rock band takes the stage
from 6:45 to 9:45 p.m.
Parker will play from 10:15 to midnight.
Dawson has expanded the event’s children’s
activities, as well as the food and
drink options. In addition to the balloon
artists and facepainting of years past, kids

get to enjoy two bounce houses.
Food options include everything from
grilled tenderloin and porkchop sliders to
Texas tenderloin, hamburgers, hotdogs,
lemonade and ice cream. Members of the
Jonathan Alder High School softball team
will man a booth selling slices of Pioneer
Pizza. All proceeds from the pizza sales go
back to the team.
Rock the Clock has always served beer
and wine. This year, mixed drinks will be
sold, too. Beverage sales help to offset the
cost of the bands, Dawson said.

Banner year
for Jr. Fair’s
livestock sale
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Final figures are still being tabulated,
but generally speaking, 2021 was a banner
year for the Junior Fair livestock sale at the
Madison County Fair.
“The sale was fantastic. I’ve never seen
so much energy in that building,” said Paul
Gross, senior fair board president.
The sale took place July 17 in the Eby
Youth Arena on the Madison County Fairgrounds
in London. Gross estimates that
600 people attended and/or took part in the
sale, with many new buyers joining longtime
buyers in supporting 4-H and FFA
youths who showed livestock at the fair.
Many of the champion and reserve champion
animals went for record-breaking dollar
amounts, but just as exciting, Gross said,
is that the minimum amount each animal
brought across the entire sale was much
higher than usual.
Helping to make that happen was a new
buyers consortium. Gross and other fair organizers
pulled together a group of buyers
whose purpose was to make sure every
youth got a solid price for their animal.
“We accomplished every goal and objective
we had to make sure every kid felt they
were an equally important part of this
event. I don’t think you could find a single
face there that wasn’t awestruck by the
level of support we had for them,” Gross
said. “Not a single kid got lost in the shuffle
or overlooked.”
Kelly Sifrit, treasurer of the Junior Fair
Livestock Sale Committee, agrees.
“The average (minimums) I saw animals
sell for across the species are higher than I’ve
ever seen, which was the entire goal of the
consortium,” she said. “It worked amazingly.”
The buyers consortium brought a total of
$55,000 to the sale. Approximately 75 percent
of the money came from businesses outside
of Madison County. Three companies
working on solar energy projects in the

London upgrades security to curb park vandalism
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The city of London is investing in upgraded security in an attempt
to curb vandalism at Cowling Park.
On July 15, city council set aside $17,500
for the purchase of new surveillance cameras.
The new equipment will survey a
broader area and provide better quality images
than the current camera system, said
council member Carla Blazier who sponsored
the legislation.
“We’ve had to close the bathrooms at the
park at least twice this year because of vandalism,”
said Rex Castle, London’s safetyservice
director. “There has been some
vandalism with the park equipment, too. It’s
kind of hard to tear that stuff up, but we’ve
had some issues.”
Vandals have broken off a sink faucet
and ripped dispensers off walls in the bathrooms.
They also punched out the glass in
the miniature library located on the park
grounds.
“Anything and everything they can
break, they break it,” Castle said.
“It’s an ongoing problem,” Blazier added.
With better quality imaging, city officials
hope they can more easily identify culprits
which would lead to prosecution.
Another planned park improvement is
the installation of benches near the playground
equipment and along the walking
paths. Some of the benches will be equipped
with USB phone chargers. Currently, park
visitors who need to charge their phones are
using outlets at the shelter house.
“By putting the chargers next to benches,
we’re trying to make things a little more
convenient. That way, parents can sit and
charge their phone while they’re watching
their kids play,” Castle said.
New water meters
Council approved a contract to purchase all new water meters
throughout the city. The project will cost $1.5 million. The Board of
Public Utilities (BPU) secured a $400,000 grant and a $1 million
interest-free, 30-year loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission
to cover the majority of the cost. The water department’s budget
will cover the remainder of the cost, Castle said.
Normally, OPWC approves a grant or a loan, not both, for such
projects, Castle said, but because OPWC received a low number of
applicants for the loan portion of their funding, London received
both.
“So far, at this time, the BPU has not brought up anything about
increasing water bills or anything like that,” said council member
Anthony Smith regarding offsetting the project’s cost.
Smith sponsored legislation for the purchase of new meters and
for approval to put the installation work out to bid. Installation is
included in the $1.5 million cost estimate.
Currently, city employees manually read the water meters. The
new meters will be read electronically, eliminating the need for
manual readings. They also will provide more accurate readings
than the aging models in use now, Smith said. The city does not
currently have a timeline for when installation will occur.

county donated $10,000 each. They include Big Plain Solar owned
by Leeward Renewable Energy, Fox Squirrel Solar owned by EDF,
and Madison Fields Solar owned by Savion. One of the other major
donors was Stanley Electric out of London, donating $5,000.
Other members of the consortium were ABC Supply, Candela
Renewables, Civista Bank, Della Selsor Trust, Eberle-Fisher Funeral
Home, Hartley Oil, IBI Consultants, Los Mariachis Mexican
Restaurant, Midland Title, and MKSK.
“We had a nice breadth of companies donating,” Gross said.
Sifrit was thrilled with the support from all of the buyers at the
sale. This year, the sale committee showed their appreciation by
setting aside part of the Coughlin Community Center as a buyers
lounge, equipped with air conditioning, seating, and food and beverages
throughout the sale.
“It was very well received. I think buyers really enjoyed that
they could step away from the sale, get good food, and then come
back. It was a way for them to get a break,” Sifrit said.
The sale committee also had hoped to livestream the sale, not
only to screens set up in the buyers lounge but as something anyone
anywhere could watch. Technical difficulties, primarily with Internet
service, prevented the livestream from happening, but Sifrit
said the committee plans to make it a feature at next year’s sale.
While the event doesn’t start until 4 p.m., Dawson expects to see
people setting up chairs and claiming spots as early as noon. Organizers
will start checking IDs, handing out drink wristbands, and
selling beer tickets at 3 p.m. The food and drink vendors will be
open for business by no later than 4. The children’s activities run
from 5 to 10 p.m.
“We’re planning on twice as many people attending as in the
past, mostly because of Drew Parker,” Dawson said. “Plus, it’s just
one of those nights when people get to see other people they haven’t
seen in a year.”
The village will close down the street in front of The Grainery,
138 W. Main St., at 9 a.m. the day of the event to allow for stage
setup. The other streets in uptown Plain City will close at noon.
Dawson and the village will post a list of parking options on their
Facebook pages prior to the event.
Pioneer Pizza is Rock the Clock’s primary sponsor. This year’s
headliner sponsor is Pioneer Roofing. Several other businesses and
groups also have pitched in to make the event possible.

Belle Morris knew she had to sleep.
In just a few hours’ time, the 8-year-old
from London would be going to the Madison
County Fair not as a regular attendee but
as a participant in an inaugural event called
Livestock 101.
She knew she would be getting a crash
course in showing an animal, but it wasn’t
the prospect of learning a new skill in front
of strangers that kept her awake. It was
knowing she would be working with
equines.
Morris said she remembers her reaction
the first time she came across a horse.
“I was looking through a book, and that’s
when I saw a picture of it,” she explained. “I
fell in love with them right away.”
Their grace and strength mesmerized
her.
“They were so majestic to me,” Morris
said. “I think they are the most magical,
beautiful creatures.”
Though she has a passion for horses,
Morris rarely has the opportunity to come
into close contact with them.
“That’s why I was really, really looking
forward to this,” she said of Livestock 101.
“I wanted to be able to see them up close.”
Morris didn’t know it at the time, but her
participation in the event would end up allowing
her many more close encounters of
the equine kind in the future.
After gathering with the more than 140
children ages 4 to 17 at the Eby Arena for a
brief introduction to the program, Morris
broke off into a smaller session with 20 individuals
and a handful of 4-H mentors who
specialize in showing equines. For close to
an hour, Ellie Edwards, a 19-year-old resident
of Grove City, taught Morris and
Skyler Mayabb the intricacies of showing
the animal and basic patterns to impress
judge Colleen Martin.
“It’s all about being calm and confident,”
said Edwards, a 2020 graduate of Central
Crossing High School and a former member
of the LFS Riders 4-H Club.
After Edwards ran her mentees through
the patterns multiple times, it was time for
Morris and Mayabb to demonstrate their
newly acquired showmanship skills. Edwards
said she was a little worried about
how it would go.
“Though they did listen to me, they spent a
lot of time petting Harvey,” she said, laughing.
Much to her delight, Morris was one of
six participants chosen for the main showman
of showmen event. Buzzing again with
nerves and excitement, Morris smiled for
the judge and capably ran Harvey through
the basic pattern.
Then came the moment Morris hadn’t
necessarily been waiting for, primarily because
she never thought it would happen.
When the judge named her as the budding
showman of showmen, the normally talka-

tive girl was rendered speechless.
As the first-place finisher in the equine
event, Morris received a certificate for a free
lease on a horse at Martin’s Lost Fortune
Stables. Not only will she be able to show
that horse at next year’s fair, she also will be
able to spend months working with horses.
“It’s a dream come true,” Morris said.
That sentiment was shared by many of
the participants in the Livestock 101 event,
which saw children from 10 counties show
equine, cattle, swine, goats, rabbits, poultry
and alpacas. Most of the budding showmen
received leases similar to the one awarded
in the equine competition.
Fair board member Quinton Keeran said
when fair organizers decided to offer this
free program to non-FFA or non-4-H members,
they were not sure what the level of interest
would be.
“We were hoping for 100 kids to sign up, but
we would have been happy with 50,” he stated.
As word spread about this event and its
mission, the community rallied around it.
“The community really got behind this
event,” Keeran said. “And when I say ‘the
community,’ I don’t just mean the kids who
signed up to participate.
“The parents were interested, former 4-H
and FFA members were interested, our local
state representatives were interested, businesses
were interested. Everyone was interested
in seeing this event become a success.”
Judging from the reaction from the children,
feedback from parents, and inquiries
about local FFA and 4-H clubs, Keeran said
Livestock 101 looks to be an event that will
be replicated throughout the state.
“I think this event will have a snowball

effect,” he said. “It was infectious, and I
think it will generate a lot of thought for future
fair planning.”
Keeran said he felt fortunate to witness
it firsthand. He said he was especially
touched by the number of current and former
FFA and 4-H members who signed on
to be mentors for the first-time event.
“The leadership that was on display is
what these clubs are all about,” he said.
“This country needs leaders who are willing
to step up, share their expertise, be kind
and help people when they need it. And we
all saw that here with this event, and that
is a true testament to what our mission is
all about.”

Smith shocked to win Grand Showman of Showmen
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Cade Smith has never thought of himself
as a showman. Instead, his focus has been
on breeding his birds and seeing them win.
But there’s no denying it now. The 2021
London High School graduate walked away
with this year’s grand showman of showmen
title at the Madison County Fair.
“I am still in shock that I won,” said the
18-year-old, who qualified for the contest as
the Junior Fair’s top poultry showman. He
was named the top poultry showman last
year, too, but due to COVID-19, the fair did
not hold the grand showman of showmen
contest in 2020.
The grand showman contest pits the best
showmen from all of the species against one
another. The contest caps off fair week competitions
and requires qualifiers to not only
show the specie by which they qualified, but
all of the other animals, too.
“I thought that since I’d only ever shown
poultry and rabbits before that I wouldn’t
really have a chance at winning,” Smith
said. “The other showmen have shown a lot
of the other species before.”
After winning the poultry showman title
early on in fair week, Smith went to work
learning how to show everything from
swine and sheep to horses and steers. Other
4-Hers and FFA members, including some
with whom Smith would be competing for
the title, were happy to lend a hand and
offer pointers.
“It’s really cool the way that everybody
helps everybody out. When I was younger,
I always saw it as, “Why would they help
their competition out?’ Now, I see it as
everybody wants everybody to do well,”
Smith said.
In the days leading up to the grand
showman contest on July 16, Smith worked
with each animal type at least once. He discovered
that many of the species were easier
to show than he expected.
“I just see a larger animal and think it’s
going to be harder than it is,” he explained.
“I was most nervous about swine. You don’t
have a halter or any other way to control it
other than a pig whip, and some pigs can
get annoyed with it and act up. The most
practice I put in was with swine.”
Messenger photos by Jeff Pfeil
Cade Smith, shown here during the equine portion of the Grand
Showman of Showmen contest, came home the winner of the
event. He earned his ticket to the Grand Showman contest as the
top poultry showman. He is a member of the Helping Hands
Happy Hearts 4-H Club.
The practice paid off, along with the many years of experience
Smith has accumulated as a 4-H and FFA member who has been a
very active participant in open class and Junior Fair contests.
“I went in there pretty nervous, but once I got in that ring with
an animal, all those nerves were gone, and I was focused on showing
those animals and nothing else,” he said. “It shows that if you
really want something and you work hard at it and you practice,
you can accomplish what you want.”
Smith got his start in 4-H through the Cloverbud program 13
years ago. When he reached show age, he followed his older siblings’
lead, showing poultry. He has done so every year since then, also
showing rabbits when he was younger and taking an active role in
showing and promoting alpacas when the fair added the specie to
its lineup five years ago.
Smith has one more year of eligibility to show animals at the
fair. He’s on the fence as to whether he will; his decision depends
on his college schedule. Smith plans to study turf grass management
starting this fall at Ohio State University Agricultural Technical
Institute in Wooster.
“My dream has always been and still is to be the head
greenskeeper at Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia where
they hold the Masters every year,” he said.
Smith was a four-year letterwinner on London High School’s golf
team. He served as president of London’s FFA chapter his senior
year and is a member of the Helping Hands Happy Hearts 4-H
Club. Smith is the son of Julia and Brian Smith.

How
to Write an
Ad that
Sells
1. Use a KEYWORD.This immediately tells the reader exactly
what it is you have to sell.
2. Make your description CLEAR and FACTUAL. State the
year, make, model, color, size, and tell what condition the item
is. Also state the special features.
3. State the PRICE. Successful Classified advertisers have
learned that the price in an ad helps increase the chances for
results.
4. If there’s a genuine sense of URGENCY, say so. The words
“We’re Moving” or “Must Sell Fast”suggests that readers
respond immediately.
5. Include your PHONE NUMBER. Classifieds get results fast
and often generate immediate sales. If you cannot be available
to answer the phone at all times, be sure to specify calling times
such as “AFTER 6 PM” or “BEFORE 11 AM.”
If you need assistance, ask one of our friendly
ADVISORS to help you word your ad!

Local Republicans endorse Peterson
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A special primary election on Aug. 3 will determine
which candidates will vie for Ohio’s U.S. 15th Congressional
District seat in the Nov. 2 general election. Steve Stivers,
a Republican, vacated the seat in May to take a job as
president and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
Eleven Republicans and two Democrats are running
in the primary election. The winners in their respective
parties will face off in November.
The Republican candidates are: John Adams, Mike
Carey, Eric Clark, Thad Cooperrider, Ruth Edmonds,
Ron Hood, Thomas Hwang, Stephanie Kunze, Jeff
LaRe, Bob Peterson, and Omar Tarazi.
“The Madison County Republican Party overwhelmingly
endorsed Bob Peterson for Congress,” said Nicholas
Adkins, chair of the Madison County Republican Central
Committee. “We stand with many others in our belief
that his principled and experienced leadership is the conservative
voice that best represents Madison County.”
Peterson graduated from The Ohio State University
with a degree in agriculture. He served as president of
the Ohio Farm Bureau for nearly five years and as
Fayette County commissioner for 14 years. He was
elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2011,
representing District 85. In 2012, he joined the Ohio
Senate; he represents the 17th Senate District.
The Democratic candidates are: Greg Betts and Allison
Russo. The Madison County Democratic Party
plans to announce which candidate they endorse after
meeting and speaking with both candidates in person
on July 24, said Anne Gorman, party chair.
For general information about all of the candidates,
go to https://ballotpedia.org/Ohio%27s_15th_Congressional_District_special_election,_2021.
The Ohio 15th Congressional District includes Clinton,
Fairfield, Hocking, Madison, Morgan, Perry, Pickaway,
and Vinton counties as well as parts of Athens,
Fayette, Franklin, and Ross counties.
