Groveport revises pool admittance policy
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The city of Groveport has made further revisions to its policies
regarding admittance to the Groveport Aquatic Center following
recent serious incidents at the pool.
On July 2, Groveport City Council approved limiting admission
to the pool to individuals and/or families who possess a resident or
non-resident seasonal pass. Day passes were eliminated.
However, on July 12, Groveport City Council approved restoring
the purchase and use of day passes to the pool for Groveport
residents.
Groveport residents are defined as those who live within the
city’s corporation limits.
The rules for the restoration of day passes are:
•Group rate 10 packs are not available the rest of the 2021 season.
•Group outings, defined as organized groups of six or more, are
not permitted.
•Groveport residents and up to five guests are eligible to purchase
day passes. The Groveport resident must accompany the
guests to the pool.
•Season pass holders and their guests are eligible to purchase
day passes and the season pass holder must accompany the guests
to the pool.
•Pre-purchased and pre-issued day passes may be used if the
above criteria are met.
•Persons who wish to use the Groveport Aquatic Center by
using day passes must first acquire a Groveport Recreation
Department issued identification card, which must then be presented
and scanned at the time of day pass payment and entry.
These identification cards are free to Groveport residents and will
Blood shortage continues: Red Cross needs donors
The American Red Cross continues to
experience a severe blood shortage and
donors of all blood types — especially type O
and those giving platelets — are urged to
make an appointment to give now.
The Red Cross needs to collect more
than 1,000 additional blood donations each
day to meet current demand as hospitals
respond to an unusually high number of
traumas and emergency room visits, organ
transplants and elective surgeries.
To thank donors who help this month,
all who come to give through July 31 will
receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card via
email and will also receive automatic entry
for a chance to win gas for a year (a $5,000
value). More information and details are
available at rcblood.org/fuel. Also, all those
who come to donate throughout the entire
month of July will be automatically
entered for a chance to win a trip for four
to Cedar Point or Knott’s Berry Farm. To
learn more, visit rcblood.org/CedarFair.
Schedule an appointment to give blood
by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App,
visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-
RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling
Blood Donor Skill on Alexa Echo device.
Upcoming blood donation sites: Canal
Winchester: July 25: 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Gender
Road Christian Church, 5336 Gender
Road; and July 31: 9 a.m.-2 p.m., The
Goddard School - Canal Winchester, 6405
Canal St.
cost $2 to non-Groveport residents. The identification card is good
for two years.
•Groveport corporate residents are not eligible to buy a day
pass unless they are a guest of a Groveport resident or a season
pass holder.
•The recreation director, after consultation with the city
administrator, has the authority to change pool classifications,
rules, policies, and definitions as needed.
“This is a very good next step,” said Groveport City
Administrator B.J. King. “This holds people accountable. We’re
going to know who is in our facility. Other communities are following
our lead regarding their own pools.”
Other actions taken by the city to maintain safety at the pool
include raising the minimum age of individuals permitted in the
facility without a parent or legal guardian to age 14 (previously it
was age 10); security cameras are being installed including five in
and around the breezeway and another at the side gate near the
concession stand; and a police officer will be assigned to the pool
during specific times mandated by the police chief after consultation
with the mayor.
The actions were taken due to a recent serious of incidents
where lifeguards were attacked at the pool. On June 30 a group of
juveniles allegedly assaulted one of the pool’s lifeguards on the
pool deck, according to the Groveport Police. Four suspects were
identified and Groveport Law Director Kevin Shannon said
charges are expected to be filed against them.
In addition to the group of juveniles’ assault on the lifeguard,
Shannon said an intoxicated male also recently allegedly assaulted
a lifeguard by pushing the lifeguard into the pool. Charges are
expected to be filed against the suspect.
