THE WANDERER’S ALTERNATIVE TEAM OF THE SEASONWe were all rightly proud of our promotion-winning Chairboys and many fans wouldhave been hard-pressed to agree on a Wanderers ‘Team of the Season’. Grimmer orMcCarthy? Gape or Ofoborh? Kashket or Onyedinma? We’re sure you all have your ownpicks, but what about those unsung heroes, who made their own, vital contributions toour charge to the Championship, all of them overlooked merely because of the tinydetail that they were playing for the opposition? Here’s our dream XI of the men whohelped us along the way to Wembley glory – not that they’ll want reminding…GOALKEEPER: Simon Eastwood – Oxford United. It’s fair to say Wycombe benefittedfrom a few dodgy ‘keeper performances over the course of the season. There was JoshVickers of Lincoln City, who cheerfully waved three Joe Jacobson set-pieces into his netand Fleetwood Town’s Alex Cairns, who appeared to have some kind of breakdown inthe playoff semi-final first leg, repeatedly trying to catch the ball long after it becameheartbreakingly apparent that he wasn’t going to. However, for direct contribution toour promotion, the prize must go to Eastwood for his extraordinarily craptacular displayin the Playoff Final. First, he completely missed Joe Jacobson’s corner, helping AnthonyStewart’s header into the net with his flailing left foot and then he confirmed our win -and his place in this team - by charging out of his goal with all the calm and control of aterrified rhino and wiping out Fred Onyedinma for the penalty, sportingly diving out ofthe way of Jacobson’s subsequent spot-kick, as the Blues claimed a historic victory.RIGHT WING-BACK: Luke Matheson – Rochdale. We feel a bit bad about this one, sowe’ll just quickly get it out the way. Having starred and scored in Dale’s heroic showingagainst Man Utd in the League Cup earlier on in the season, 17-year-old England youthinternational Matheson was rightly being touted for a bright future and added to astring of superb performances with a near-excellent display against the Chairboys. Wesay ‘near-excellent’, because in the third minute of stoppage time, with the score tied at1-1, Paul Smyth raced past him into the box, only to be brought down by his clumsychallenge. Jacobson did the honours from the spot to wrap up the points and the poorkid left the field in tears, although Wolves bought him for a million quid about twoweeks later, so he probably cheered up fairly quickly.RIGHT CENTRE-BACK: Harry Souttar – Fleetwood Town. Trailing 4-1 from the playofffirst leg, Fleetwood went into the game at Adams Park knowing they had to attack fromthe off and they duly grabbed an earlyish goal to bring themselves back into the tie andset Wycombe nerves jangling. They upped the pressure, whilst also keeping it tight atthe back, the Wycombe attack getting little change out of a Cod defence that showed alot more discipline than they had up at Highbury. Even when Fred Onyedinma did go ona solo run towards the Town goal, Souttar kept pace and dispossessed him. However,instead of shielding it out for a corner, Souttar inexplicably chose to hook the ball backinto the feet of the grateful Fred, who tucked the ball home from close range. The windtaken out their sails, Fleetwood lost their early momentum and despite pulling anotherone back, Onyedinma added a late second to ensure there’d be no second leg fightback.51
