BROTHERS HAVE
PLENTY TO SHARE
EMILY FESZCZUK
Starting as buskers alongside Tash
Sultana and Tones and I, folk
rock duo Pierce Brothers have
made a name for themselves in
Australia and around the world.
The twin brothers, Jack and Patrick Pierce
released their new album ‘Into the Great
Unknown’ earlier this year and are hoping
to share it with Sydney audiences during a
live show in October.
Patrick Pierce told Parra News that the
Melbourne duo’s supportive family led to
their interesting real names and career in
music.
“Mum and dad had three kids and wanted
one more but got twins so Jack is actually
John Patrick and I am Patrick John…
funny thing is until I was about 15 I just
thought that was how twins were named,”
Patrick said.
“It wasn’t until our older brothers started
playing guitar that we thought it was the
coolest thing ever and our family had a big
focus on creativity so they all backed us.”
Exploding onto the world scene in 2014
with their breakout EP ‘The Night Tree’, the
musicians have been honing their skills
leading into their new album and national
tour.
“In the past whoever brought up a song
was sort of the Director and our last few records
we did between tours when we had
time so it was quite disjointed but this time
we were staying at a studio with a guest
house during lockdown,” Patrick said.
“It was a completely new way of making
music that we had to get used to but we
became so in sync and had this creative
language and understanding of what we
wanted which created songs so much better
than anything we had ever done.”
Despite Patrick describing them as a folk
roots duo that jump around like a punk
band, ‘Into the Great Unknown’ deals
with serious topics that are very relevant
in today’s world and the huge uncertainty
within it.
“Trepidation came through a lot as Jack
was about to have a baby and I was about
to get engaged so we were dealing with
those big changes in life,” he said.
“We talk about dynamics shifting but
around the world there was big storm on
the horizon and everything was about to
change with COVID-19 so our lyrics and
motifs in the album really reflect that.”
Pierce Brothers will be on at the Oxford
Art Factory in Sydney on Thursday, October
7 at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets are from
