“Building parks for people”: Government completes major refurbishment

A
slice of Parramatta Park’s heritage
has been preserved with a
number of conservation works
now complete.
The State Government has completed
$1 million worth of important refurbishments
to historical convict sites, park
pavilions, bridges, gatehouses, monuments
and park amenities, as part of the
Parramatta Park Heritage Conservation
Program.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces
Rob Stokes said the upgrades demonstrated
the State Government’s commitment
to “building parks for people”.
“Parramatta Park is one of the most
beautiful and historically significant
parks in Sydney and this government is
proud to invest in its future,” he said.
“The new Greater Sydney Parklands
has a pivotal role in ensuring Sydney’s
iconic parks, such as Parramatta Park, are
preserved for generations to come.”

“The pandemic has shown us that public
spaces and parkland are critical to our
mental and physical wellbeing,” he said.
“Parramatta Park is a special place for
local residents and this is a great project
to protect its local history and improve the
visitor experience.”
Recently residents have been fighting for
the preservation of 60 mature trees which
were set to be bulldozed to make way for
the new ‘People’s Loop’ project.
The $2.5 million project aims to remove
the majority of vehicles from within the
core of the park.
Councillor Patricia Prociv put forward a
notice of motion in June, following a petition
by the North Parramatta Residents
Action Group, calling for the Council
to not support the removal of the trees,
however, this was voted down.
The Dairy & Ranger Cottages have been restored.
Despite this, following community advocacy
and a pause in works, the original 60
trees earmarked for removal have been
reduced to 30.
The originally planned 86-space car
park in the south-west corner of the park
adjacent to the railway line has been
reduced to 79 spaces.
The original promise of 120 new replacement
trees has also been increased to 170
trees.
