Down through the generations<br />
Neill Price’sfamily has had an account<br />
with Blackwells Department Store for<br />
more than 80 years.<br />
The Kaiapoi identity has known the<br />
Blackwellfamily for as long as he can<br />
remember and has been shoppinginthe<br />
store since he was ayoungster.<br />
‘‘And Iprobably went there in the pram<br />
not knowing Iwas there.’’<br />
The family’s legacy has been one of<br />
service to thecommunity and setting a<br />
high standard for presentation, Mr Price<br />
says.<br />
‘‘Theywere always immaculately<br />
dressed in suits and the staff were always<br />
well dressed andpresented themselves<br />
immaculately.<br />
‘‘Theyalways did that little bit extra that<br />
afamily business can do, as opposed to a<br />
trading conglomerate.’’<br />
Mr Pricewell remembers Joseph<br />
Blackwell from his childhood.<br />
‘‘If evertherewas aman that impressed<br />
me as akid, it wasJ.H. Blackwell. He used<br />
to walkacross thebridge and he usedto<br />
stand up straightand was always<br />
immaculately dressed.’’<br />

been shoppingatBlackwells since he was<br />
ayoungster.<br />
‘‘They’ve always been there. It’s<br />
something you probably takefor granted.<br />
Blackwellsisknownfor the oldfashioned<br />
style in whichthe shopwas runbefore the<br />
earthquake. Thingslike the docket books<br />
and theoldfashioned till, which is still<br />
there.Who does that?’’<br />
The Blackwellfamily havealways been<br />
generousand loyal to Kaiapoi, he says.<br />
‘‘They’re never selfish when thinking of<br />
the town and betteringtheir business, they<br />
always consider how it willwork for the<br />
town.’’<br />

involvement and providing two Kaiapoi<br />
Mayors.<br />
‘‘It’s an amazing achievement. New<br />
Zealand history isn’t along one, but the<br />
Blackwellshave been apartofKaiapoi’s<br />
European history for most of it. And the<br />
storyisjust amazing. It’s suchaniconic<br />
store, that when peoplethink of Kaiapoi<br />
they think of Blackwells anditseems to<br />
have been drawing peopletothe town<br />
sincethe earthquake.’’ Bouncing backso<br />
quickly afterthe September 2010<br />
earthquake is testamenttothe family’s<br />
resilience, Mrs Watsonsays.<br />

chairperson Martin Pinkhamsays ‘‘if it<br />
wasn’t for Blackwells, Kaiapoi wouldn’t be<br />
Kaiapoi’’.‘‘You just have to admire the<br />
courage they had after the earthquake.’’<br />
Mr Pinkhamhas lived in Kaiapoi since<br />
1968and sayshis mother once worked<br />
upstairsinthe Blackwellsbuilding, which<br />
at the time was leased out to ashirt<br />
factory.<br />
‘‘It wasareal institution then and it is<br />
now and alot of people come out to<br />
Kaiapoi to shop at Blackwells. It’s a<br />
special place for sure.’’<br />
