Awards recognise service to Hurunui<br />

HurunuiMayor MarieBlacksays she is<br />

humbled by the oftenunspoken work that<br />

goesonwithin the communities.<br />

community groups andindividuals that<br />

tirelesslyworktogethertobringbenefit<br />

to our district.’’<br />

Michelle Forbes, whoreceived a<br />

community service award,saysshe<br />

volunteers because it is ‘‘so much fun’’.<br />

Michelle,from theAmuri area,was one<br />

of seven HurunuiDistrict residentsto<br />

receive aCommunity Service Award<br />

during aceremony in theWaipara Town<br />

Hall.<br />

She was joined in receiving an award<br />

by DavidMoore, of Amberley,David<br />

Anderson, of Cheviot, Terry Donaldson,<br />

of Glenmark, Annie Trumanand John<br />

Dawber,ofHanmerSprings,and Keith<br />

Yorston, of Hurunui.<br />

WilliamMunsey receivedthe youth<br />

volunteer awardand Hurunui District<br />

Council youth development co­ordinator<br />

RebeccaPagewas awardedthe<br />

volunteering award.<br />

The Mayor’soutstanding youth<br />

leadershipawardwent to NicCrump,<br />

who joined the Hurunui Youth<br />

Programme last year.<br />

He willattend the PacificLeadership<br />

Programme laterthis year in theCook<br />

Islands.<br />

HurunuiDistrictCouncil youth<br />

developmentofficerWardShearman<br />

saysthe accoladesfor youth werewell<br />

deserved.<br />

‘‘It’sareflection of thehardwork they<br />

haveput in. I’m constantly in aweofwhat<br />

the youth of Hurunuiachieve.’’<br />

was great to seethe biological diversity<br />

that is beingembracedinthe Hurunui<br />

district,with plenty of initiatives around<br />

native treeplantinghappening.<br />

She saysplanting natives is agreat<br />

start, but there arecertainly<br />

opportunities to lookwider.<br />

‘‘Weencourageprotecting habitats and<br />

fauna, andsafeguardingecosystems. It’s<br />

aboutpooling resources and seeing<br />

bigger projectsacross thedistrict.’’<br />
