Contributiontothe<br />
arts significant<br />
The Blackwell family’s contributionto<br />
the artsinKaiapoi has been<br />
‘‘tremendous’’, Kaiapoi Art Expo Trust<br />
deputychairperson Jackie Watson says.<br />
Blackwells Department Store has<br />
been asponsor of the annual Kaiapoi<br />
Art Expo, held in July, since its<br />
inception 16 years,with Andrew<br />
Blackwellhaving servedonthe<br />
committee.<br />
‘‘The Blackwellsare wonderful<br />
supporters of the art expo and have<br />
organised an event alongside it to bring<br />
more peopleinto the town,’’ Mrs Watson<br />
says.<br />
‘‘It is suchtremendous community<br />
support from the family.’’<br />
The family established the Fire and<br />
Ice Festivalalongside the art expo,<br />
after the department storewas<br />
reopened in 2013, having been rebuilt<br />
after the September2010 earthquake.<br />
As part of the 150th celebrations, the<br />
Blackwell family has paidfor a<br />
sculpture which willbeunveiledonthe<br />
Kaiapoi River bank later this year.<br />
The sculpture will make awonderful<br />
addition to the town,alongside the<br />
water feature outsidethe Ruataniwha<br />
Kaiapoi Library, which was also made<br />
possible by agenerous donation from<br />
the Blackwell family,Mrs Watsonsays.<br />
The water feature, worth$72,000,was<br />
fundedbya$42,000 donation from the<br />
Margaret MBlackwell Trust and a<br />
$30,000 grantfrom the Kaiapoi<br />
CommunityBoard in 2013.<br />
Adaughter of J.H. Blackwell,<br />
Margaret Blackwell was born in<br />
Kaiapoi in 1907 and had acareer in<br />
nursing, childpsychology and<br />
counselling.Margaret Blackwell’s<br />
estatealso contributedtoalarge<br />
stained glass window in the Kaiapoi Cooperating<br />
Parish, which was dedicated<br />
in March 1981.<br />
