New standardbred birthday<br />
Achange from August 1asthe traditional<br />
birthdate for New Zealand standardbreds<br />
has been called ‘‘a defining moment’’ by<br />
Harness Racing New Zealand’s (HRNZ)<br />
chief executive.<br />
The new birthdate willbeJanuary 1.<br />
‘‘There was unanimousapproval for the<br />
idea right acrossthe sport,’’ says Gary<br />
Woodham.<br />
‘‘We are thrilled all clubs have got behind<br />
this initiative.’’<br />
Under the new system,ahorse bornin<br />
January 2020 would become ayearling on<br />
January 1, <strong>2021</strong>, and ahorse bornin<br />
November 2020 would become ayearling<br />
on January 1, 2022.<br />

One immediate change could be that<br />
juvenile races arespread out over the year,<br />

are set to have an official birthdate on New<br />
Year’s Day.<br />

The birthdate change was madeata<br />
special generalmeeting at HRNZ’s<br />
Christchurchheadquarters in May this<br />
year when representatives of morethan 40<br />
clubs wereinvolvedinthe decision making,<br />
eitherinperson or via Zoom.<br />
Opportunity for youth voice<br />
Environment <strong>Canterbury</strong> is seeking a<br />
young person from <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> to<br />
join its Youth Ropu.<br />
The regional council is going for its<br />
recruitment process for the Youth<br />
Ropu, with representatives selected<br />
from each of the six constituencies and<br />
two mana whenua selected.<br />
The YouthRropu is aformalised<br />
group of young people who are<br />
enthusiastic about the environment,<br />
civics and empowering young people<br />
and is in its third year.<br />
There are opportunities for Youth<br />
Rōpū members to be involved in social<br />
media campaigns, for the internal<br />
organisation of the Youth Ropu,<br />
forming partnerships with other youth<br />
organisations, working with <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
Water Zone Committees and<br />
involvement in other initiatives.<br />
Applicants need to be aged between<br />
14 and 24 years and either live in, go to<br />
school or work in, or be from that area<br />
they represent.<br />

Waimakariri District Council meetings<br />
are set to return to theRangiora<br />
chambers beforethe end of theyear.<br />
Workisclosetocompletion in the<br />
Rangiora service centre, with the<br />
building expected to be fully open to the<br />
public by themiddle of next month.<br />
Finishingtouches arebeing made to<br />
the$2.5millionrevampwhichbegan<br />
last yearand has beendelayedbyCovid<br />
19.<br />
Carpetlaying, plumbing and<br />
electricalworkinstaffand public<br />
toilets,aswell as final electricalwork<br />
andthe HVAC upgrade in the council<br />
chambersare still to be completed.<br />
Once completed, artwork will be<br />
relocated andsignage installed, before<br />
thefurniture is movedback in.<br />

budget of $4.3million for afullrevamp<br />
of the building, butscaled the project<br />
backbecauseofCovid19, with onlythe<br />
necessary repairs andupgrades<br />
completed.<br />
Strengthening work has been<br />
completed, including the installationof<br />
abeam to support theroof alongthe<br />
westernwall, andthe mezzaninefloor<br />
has beenstrengthenedwith the<br />
application of acarbon fibrereinforced<br />
polymer acrossthe whole surface.<br />
The work was expectedtobring the<br />
building’s seismic performanceuptoat<br />
least 67 percent of the NewBuilding<br />
Standard.<br />
Further upgrade work is expected to<br />
be considered as part of awider<br />
upgrade of the Rangioracouncil<br />
precinct, including the Trevor Inch<br />
Memorial Libraryaspart of the Long<br />
TermPlan, with atentative date of 2028.<br />
