Bring your bikes to Kaikoura ‘trail town’<br />

‘‘cycle trail town’’.<br />
The Kaikoura Cycling Club<br />
has been busydeveloping<br />
cycling trialsthroughoutthe<br />
district andhas plenty of ideas<br />
for more, secretary Sally<br />
Turnbullsays.<br />
‘‘We’ve beenbusyand we<br />
intend to keepbeing busy.<br />
‘‘We’vegot grand plans for<br />
lots moretrailsand we are<br />
trying to promoteKaikoura as<br />
atrail town as well as awhale<br />
town.<br />
‘‘There’s areally good<br />
variety to suit allabilities, but<br />
of course duringlockdown,<br />
we’vebeenrestricted to<br />
enjoying thenice, gentle<br />
tracks.’’<br />
The clubhas developedsix<br />
maintrails to suitdifferent<br />
abilities,including the familyfriendly48km<br />
Kaikoura trail,<br />
whichcan ridden in sections,<br />
and the 9.2km HaumuriBluff<br />
trail.<br />
For themoreadventurous<br />
thereare the intermediate<br />
level24km beachbiking and<br />
60km Puhi Puhi Valley trails,<br />
and the moreadvanced 51km<br />
Mt Fyffe and55kmClarence<br />
Reservetrails.<br />
Thereare plans foranew<br />
trailtolink South Bay to<br />
Peketa,southofKaikoura, a<br />
peninsula cycling trail, ‘‘abike<br />
park’’ in theOcean Ridge subdivision<br />
and apump track for<br />
all abilities, Mrs Turnbull<br />
says.<br />

Thepeninsula trail would be<br />
separatetothe Department of<br />
Conservation walking track,<br />
shesays.<br />
‘‘Every cyclist who comesto<br />
Kaikoura assumestheycan<br />
ride it, but they can’t.<br />
‘‘Butit’sabit of mission to<br />
get all the stakeholdersto<br />
meet.’’<br />
Cycletracks were included<br />
when the Ocean Ridge subdivisionwas<br />
established, but<br />
they have‘‘notbeenwell<br />
maintainedorconnected’’.<br />
Thetracks couldbetidied<br />
up andprovidethe basis for a<br />
bike parktobedeveloped<br />
there, Mrs Turnbull says.<br />
Theclub alsoplans to<br />
extendthe Kaikouratrail so it<br />
canlink in with theHurunui<br />
Heartland Ride andthe<br />
proposedWhaleTrail from<br />
Pictontothe ClarenceValley.<br />
