Gales down trees, wreck property<br />
<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> is in clean up mode.<br />
Two gale force nor’westers have lefta<br />
trailofdestructionwith treesdown, power<br />
polesand roadsigns snappedoff, and<br />
irrigators toppled.<br />
Woolsheds, woodsheds and garden<br />
shedstook ahammering,some houseshad<br />
near misses, and many are still hunting for<br />
garden furniture, chimney tops, their<br />
trampoline and other property. Othersare<br />
looking for owners of property thatblew<br />
in.<br />
Brutal gusts toppled old man pines roots<br />
over fences, sheds,woolsheds and other<br />
property,along withbranches torn from<br />
trees.<br />
Therewere several fires sparked into<br />
life,but no huge damage. Seven fire<br />
appliances, tankers, tractors and<br />
manpower managed to containafire near<br />
Glentui whichwas threatening to get away<br />
in the Garry Riverbed.<br />
Stocklosses were also minimal withthe<br />
wind and downed treescausing afew<br />
headaches for farmers, particularlythose<br />
in the middle of lambing.<br />
MainPowercrewsworked long hours to<br />
repair theextensive damage to the<strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong>networkuntil late Friday<br />
night, and over the weekend.But some still<br />
didn’t haveany power when the second<br />
gale hit on Sunday night, early Monday<br />
morning.<br />
This timethe wind was accompanied by<br />
heavyrain, lightening and thunder,<br />
although was not aferocious or<br />
destructive as the previous gale.<br />
This added to the woes of the crews<br />
waiting for safeconditions to restore<br />
powertocouncil and private water<br />
schemes, residents andbusinesses.<br />
Ablue gum crashedthrough the roof of<br />
the 1912IslandHills Woolshed, west of<br />
Culverden, owned by Dan and Mandy<br />
Shand, while The Grange near Oxford,<br />
also lost part of the roof of the woolshed. It<br />
is hoped the woolshed is repairable,while<br />
thereisplenty of work to do in the new<br />

Adam Green, his partner Rio Coster and<br />
flatmate,Alhad alucky escapeafter huge<br />
treescrashed down neartheir house on<br />
theoutskirts of Oxford. Ahorse float, and<br />
aspa were squashed and acar badly<br />
damaged by falling branches.<br />
‘‘The spas agoner. The horsefloat and<br />
Al’s car are all writeoffs,’’says Adam.<br />
He was up and about at 2am on Friday<br />
morningwhenheheard the treesstarting<br />
to come down. He decided everyone would<br />
be much saferinalarge shed nearby.<br />
‘‘Our bedroom is wherethe branches<br />
were coming down. Atree just missedthe<br />
house. Branches hit the corner. There is a<br />
bit of damagetothe guttering, and a<br />
couple of down pipes,’’ he says.<br />
Hanmer Springs took abattering on<br />
Sunday night, clearing abuilding site for a<br />
second time,treestoppled, and power<br />
outagesdisrupted business. Tracks were<br />
closed untilthey could be cleanedup.<br />

surrounds also suffered from the gales<br />
with reportsofbrokenpower poles, and<br />

ahome near Oxfordcrushed under apile of<br />
branches.<br />
