Chch show
faces covid
challenges
The New Zealand Agricultural
Show, in Christchurchhas been
cancelled for the second year in
arow due to covid. Butwill run
smallereventswith no public
attendance.There will alsobe
some online activities to keep
peopleengaged. Detailsof
Canterbury Agriculturaland
Pastoral Association board
chairman StewartMitchell said
there washuge
disappointment, but no option
with no indication whenlevel 2
would be lifted.
“We simply can’t have large
crowdsaccumulating and
enjoyingthe show as they
normally do.
‘‘We worked through avariety
of options to see if we could
make it work, but with only 35
daystogo, it’s not viable.
“The show costs around $1
milliontostage eachyear and
requiresa12month lead in
time.
‘‘Muchofthecost is
committed in the lead in to the
showatthe start of October and
we just can’t take the risk in the
hope of adrop to Level 1. Hope
is not agood strategy,’’ Mr
Mitchell said.
Swappa milk bottle
Synlait Milk Limited has
launched its first consumer
foods product –Synlait Swappa
Bottle; a1.5 litre reusable,
stainless steel bottle of
homogenised milk.
Milk is exclusively sourced
from Synlait’s highest
performing farms and asimple
concept –drink, return the empty
bottle and lid to the store and
repeat; helping to reduce waste
and eliminate plastic packaging.
Synlait director sustainability
and brand Hamish Reid said
New Zealanders were concerned
about plastic waste, but in milk,
there have not been many
options.
‘‘Synlait Swappa Bottle is a
step in the journey towards
eliminating plastic waste. Each
time we drink, return, repeat, we
contribute to abetter future.”
Initially the swappa bottle has
been launched in two South
Island New World stores
(Fendalton and St Martins), with
plans to widen distribution over
time.
Synlait has signalled its
intention to move closer to the
consumer for some time.
Its acquisition of Dairyworks
in 2019 was the start of this and
adding aSynlaitbranded
product strengthens and
complements its current
business portfolio and expertise.
“There’s an opportunity for
reusables to play amuch bigger
role in New Zealanders’ food and
beverage future ... in launching
Synlait Swappa Bottle ... we’re
hoping to trigger change,’’ he
said.
