Applications open for award<br />

Zonta <strong>Ashburton</strong> wants to<br />
encourageyoung women to<br />
get involvedinpublicaffairs<br />
and are seeking applications<br />
for their 2022 Young Women<br />
in Public AffairsAward.<br />
Zonta International’s<br />
Terrie Hunt said the award<br />
was for young women aged<br />
between 16 and 19, as at April<br />
1, 2022, who hadshown a<br />
commitment to being actively<br />
involved in their community<br />
in both leadershipand<br />
voluntaryroles to empower<br />
women.<br />
Public affairs referred to all<br />
aspects of community life<br />
where decisions havetobe<br />
made aboutissues relating to,<br />
and affecting communities in<br />
which people work and live.<br />
‘‘The application consists of<br />
completing afew essay<br />
questions and meeting up<br />
with apanel of local Zonta<br />
members,’’she said.<br />
‘‘One is then selected as the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>awardee and is<br />
then submitted for the Zonta<br />
D16/ New Zealand Award. The<br />
successful D16 New Zealand<br />
Awardee is then considered for<br />
one of ten international<br />
awards.’’<br />
Each award has amonetary<br />
prize.<br />
Zonta encouraged young<br />
women to pursue careers or<br />
seek leadership positions in<br />
public policy making,<br />
government and volunteer<br />
organizations and further their<br />
education with aview to get<br />
more women represented in<br />
key decisionmaking positions<br />
worldwide.<br />
‘‘The Young Women in<br />
PublicAffairs Award is a<br />
prestigiousaward recognised<br />
internationally by prospective<br />
employees and global<br />
organisations,’’ Mrs Hunt said.<br />

Funding boost for Silver Fern Farms<br />
SilverFern Farms (SFF) is<br />
welcoming $1 million of cofunding<br />
from the Government<br />
InvestmentinDecarbonising<br />
Industry (GIDI) Fundfor a$2.6<br />
million coalout projectatits<br />
Pareora processing site.<br />
The funding was asignificant<br />
boost to achieve the company’s<br />
commitment to end all coal use<br />
by 2030.<br />
The Pareora heatpump<br />
conversion projectisthe<br />
company’sthird successful<br />
project under the GIDI fund<br />
and represents another<br />
important step in SFF’s<br />
commitment in driving<br />
sustainability in the red meat<br />
sector.<br />
SilverFern Farms chief<br />
executive Simon Limmer said<br />
SFF was committed to<br />
reducing greenhouse gas<br />
emissions.<br />
“Support from the GIDI fund<br />
means we can make significant<br />
capital investments in low<br />
carbonenergy with certainty<br />
and is agreat example of how<br />
the private sector can<br />
collaborate with the<br />
Government for climatepositive<br />
outcomes,” he said.<br />
SFF has committed to a1.5<br />
degree science aligned target<br />
to reduce combined Scope 1<br />
and 2processing emissions by<br />
42% by 2030 (from a2020 base<br />
year) and will leadthe red meat<br />
sectorbyjoining the<br />
International Science Based<br />
Targets initiative by the end of<br />
<strong>2021</strong>.<br />
