There’s something aboutlive
theatre that feels so needed
right about now. Nothing
beatsdimmed lights ,a
buzzing cast, crew and an
audience waiting forthe lights
to go up on opening night. Mid
Canterbury Children’s
Theatrehaveonce again lit up
thestage at the Ashburton
TrustEvent Centre with a
stunningperformance of The
Little Mermaid.
From stunningcostumes,
gorgeousprops anda
beautiful cast,the under
watershow came to life.
MCCT have afabulous
reputation of creating an
amazing set andthisshowwas
no exception. From the
beautifullydesigned coral
reef to theboat used in ‘kiss
thegirl’ it is clear how
dedicated thecrew areto
creating theatremagic. A
huge roundofapplause goes
to thecreative minds that
broughtthisshow to stage.
With plenty of standout up
andcoming performers a
special mention goes to a
beautiful Arielwho graced
thestage with agorgeous
performance of ‘Part of your
world’ leaving goosebumps.
MollyMcKennagave therole
so much feeling and put her
allinto thecharacter.Brooke
Miller who played Ursula has
done amagnificent jobat
being astrongperformerwith
an amazing stage presence.
Everyonewas in awe
watching her perform
‘unfortunatesouls’ as she took
control of thestage. Of course
astunning,clever wee crab
known as Sebastiansang the
most well known songs from
the movie. The catchysongs
lead by CharlotteLivingstone
leftanimpressionon
everyoneasthe songs could
be heardafter the
performance. Aspecial
mentionalso goes to Madeline
Howden who playsFlounder.
The best friend of Arielwho
becomesmore braveand
confidentthroughout the
show. Agorgeous costume and
character who sings
beautifully in ‘she’s in love’
with the beautiful Mersisters.
The hilarious Scuttle and
Chef Louis added some
comedy to their solos as well.
Howcan we forget the
master minds behind the
show; the directing team.
JessieThomson hasbuilt up
quitethe reputation with her
choreography and did not
disappoint. Her adaptability
from working withadults and
children brings outthe best in
her performers. She should
take great prideinall she’s
done to turn these kids (and
some adults) into beautiful
dancers, movers and groovers.
JoCastelow had taken on two
shows at the same time! Need
Isay more.
Although JesusChristdid
notgoahead,her workinto all
thesoloists andharmonies
neverdisappoints in any of
hershows shemusically
directs.This wasn’tCherie
Livingstone’s firstrodeo
either. Working withchildren
andkeeping them engaged
throughout this season has
made the show. Your passion
forgetting this show on stage
really shows and that passion
fortheatrehas nowsparked
somethinginside those kids. A
huge congratulations to the
directing team for all your
hard work anddedication.
Ialwaysfind it so special to
seechildren onstage falling
in lovewith musical theatre.
Thechildren shouldall be
very proud of themselves for
what they’veaccomplished.
Especiallyduring these
strangecovid times abreak
wasavery unfortunate turn of
events. But theMCCTpushed
on through with their
directing team and cast,and
didwhat was thoughtcould be
impossible.Cherie
Livingstone, Jo Castelowand
Jessie Thomsonhave
whipped these kids intoshape
in lesstime than anticipated.
Congratulations to all those
involved and Ihope you’vegot
those children hooked into
musicaltheatre.
