Health
&
Wellbeing
Chiropractic and health
A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who
specialises in the health and function of the spine and
nervous system. These principles were formed into
adistinct approach in 1895 by an American named
Daniel David Palmer –“D. D. Palmer”.
Chiropractic is knowntohelpwith back and neck pain
together with headaches. However it can also help
with total health and well-being. It’s about helping
people to feel great and get the most out of life by
having awell-functioning spine working at itsoptimal
potential.
Howdoes this work? The spine protects the spinal cord
which is part ofthe central nervous system. The spine
acts likeaset of armour which is made up of segments
thatcan bend and move naturally which in turnallows
the body to move.
Aspinal segment consists of two vertebrae and the
joints that connect them. There isadisc in-between
each vertebrathatactsasacushion.
Underneath that armour there is a whole lot
happening.Messages travel from around the body,up
the spinal cord and intothe brain. Thebrain processes
those messages and sends replies back down the
spinal cord to tell the body how torespond creating
one big information highway.
Sometimes, the wear and tear of everyday life can
impactonthe spine andcausespinalsegments to move
in away thatisdifferenttonormal–inadysfunctional
way. That wear and tear can happen gradually from
poor posture, or it can happen suddenly as in asports
injuries or amotor vehicle accident.
Because of the close relationship between the spine
and the nervous system, everyday strains can actually
impactthe flowofinformation between the brain and
the body.Messages maynot be delivered to the brain,
or they maybeinaccurate
When thatmiscommunication occurs due to abnormal
movementinthe spine,called a‘vertebral subluxation’
bychiropractors,thereisadisruptiontotheinformation
from the body to the brain, and the brains ability to
respond. This is when Chiropractors use gentle spinal
adjustments to correct the vertebral subluxation to
allow the spine to function better creating improved
communication between the body and the brain.
