Cr Falloon was at acouncil meeting last week to discuss whether to progress abusiness casefor asecond bridge. He used the phrase after 90 minutes of discussions and the grilling of Stantec transport engineer ChrisRossiter, whotold council a bridgeoff Chalmers Avenuewas the best option and offered the most benefits. Stantec compiled a183page report andindicative business casefor council on bridgelocationoptions, modellingand timeframesfor building. Manyother councillors were also keen to progress the project 15 years in the making. He now supported that location andhad changed his views after theMay 31 flood, which had isolated the community into two parts. Asecond bridge at Chalmers Avenue wasacheap option for NZTA and Ashburton would end up picking up afair amount of the cost, he said. ‘‘Ofparamount importance is to get asecond bridge, thesooner the better, and to stop kicking the can down the road.’’ Cr Liz McMillan said council needed to get on withthe business case. Cr Rodger Letham said he reluctantly supportedthe motion. ‘‘Everyreporthas recommended Chalmers Avenue,’’ he said. Mayor Neil Brown saidconnectivity was essential and another bridge was needed sooner rather than later. There hadbeenprevious consultation on theChalmers Avenue location and some peoplewere not happy with it, but manywere. Getting abridgein 2026/27 was along way out andthe process needed to be sped up. Funding support from NZTA was still needed and he hoped it would be 80 per cent, although only50per cent would be funded as of right, he said. AsuggestionbyCrCarolyn Cameron for more consultation on abridge location wasshot downbyother councillors and she was told that action could ‘‘derail’’ the entire process and putsupport funding in jeopardy. Cr Diane Rawlinson said she was disappointed that there was no costingtohaveasecond bridge beside thecurrentbridge. NZTA’s Mark Pinner points out reinforced concrete blocks under the bridge.

Current Level Two rules stipulate outdoor events held in publicparks anddomains arelimited to just 100 people. The festiveconcert in the Ashburton Domainusually attracts thousands. “Given the immense amount of planning involved in this event, we have had to make thedisappointingdecision to cancel this year’s concert,” organisingcommittee member Lisa Anderson said. “We would like to thankthe local businesses, organisations and amazingly talentedindividuals whohave partnered withus thisyear, despite the unstable environment.’’ The familyfriendly Ashburton Mitre10Mega Christmas in theParkisafree outdoorevent thatattracts local and out of town performers. It has been held since2013 andalways ends with abig firework display. Council events canned AshburtonDistrict Councilhas made the early decision to cancel three public Christmasactivities because of uncertainties aroundCovid19. Light Up the Night on Saturday 27 November and abuskersnightand family movie nightinDecemberhave all been canned. Council communityservicesgroup managerSteve Fabish said uncertainties aroundcovidrestrictionshad led to the decision. “While it’s disappointing, council needs to act cautiouslybefore committing to the extendedcosts of runningtheseevents.” Light Up the Night is when the Ashburtonmayortraditionally hitsthe switch to light up the district’s giant Christmastree, whichthisyear will be positioned in the newlyrevamped CBD. Council is nowplanning to livestream the lightup. AshburtonDistrictcouncillor Carolyn Cameronsaid she was disappointed and annoyedthat Light Up The Night had been cancelled. It was alost opportunity to showcase the revitalisation project in the Ashburton CBD,whichhad caused monthsof disruption, but wasnow nearing its completion. MrsCameron,who isastrongadvocate for avibrant CBDand supporter of local business,said councilhad made an early call to cancel, which in someways she could understand. TheBite Nite CultureFest, an event organised by the AshburtonYouth Council, is anothercasualtyofcovidand has also been cancelled. Vibrant festival scaled back The Harcourts Geraldine Festival committee has made the decision to postpone their full event until November 2022. Astatement fromthe organising committee said the focus at this time was onensuring thesafety ofthe community and althoughadifficult decision to made, it was the right oneatthis time.
