How quickly time flies. Issue number 4 of our Quarterly shows us that almost another whole year is behind us. 

A year marked by a virus that just won‘t go away and all its effects on our society, our economy and, of course, 

on Bürklin Elektronik. We have positioned ourselves well and have done a lot to be able to continue to serve you, 

dear customers, in the best possible way. You are always at the center of all our activities and we want to focus 

even more on your needs. In this Quarterly, you will therefore also find a link to our current customer survey. 

We would like to ask you to take about 5 minutes to answer our questions. Thank you very much. 

Of course, this issue of the Quarterly is once again packed with many product innovations and highlights. 

These include new products for air disinfection using UVC disinfection and the latest filtration technologies. 

Furthermore, we look back on our participation at the all about automation (aaa) in Chemnitz and the all about 

automation in Essen and give an outlook on the upcoming aaa in Hamburg, in January 2022. Finally, we would

Finally real trade fairs again! In September and October, 

Bürklin Elektronik was represented for the first time 

after more than a year of „trade fair abstinence“ with an 

exhibition stand at the all about automation trade fairs 

in Chemnitz and Essen. The all about automation trade 

fairs focus on national and international component and 

system suppliers of automation technology as well as on 

professional suppliers and service providers. 

In an almost familiar atmosphere we could present ourselves, 

our services as well as our product range to the 

interested audience. Interesting discussions were held 

and many potential new customers could be won. 

We will keep the all about automation trade fairs in our 

trade fair schedule for 2022.

After our comprehensive reports on 

the Smart Bürklin Online Shop project 

in Bürklin Elektronik Quarterly 

#01/2021 as well as #02/2021, you 

- dear customers and suppliers -

WHEN WILL THE TIME COME? 

About a year ago, Bürklin Elektronik 

decided to rely on the Intershop 

Commerce Cloud platform. Together 

with our implementation partner 

Smart Commerce, we are pursuing 

the headless commerce approach. 

In this approach, the frontend and 

backend of the eCommerce solution 

are decoupled from each other. At 

Bürklin Elektronik, both the backend 

and the frontend are based on the 

Intershop standard solution, which 

has been adapted to a large extent to 

our individual requirements. These 

adjustments take time - more time 

than planned. According to current 

plans, we expect a Soft Go-Live in 

Q1 2022. Why? You can find out in 

the following.

GO-LIVE PLANNING &

time. The implementation of relevant 

B2B functionalities and the 

development of our Smart Search 

(see the Bürklin Elektronik Quarterly 

#01/2021) requires precision and endurance 

from all project participants. 

Only when we are sure that we can 

convince you as a customer will we 

present the new online shop to you. 

During the course of the project, 

we have already achieved major 

milestones, with a few still ahead of 

us. One of these milestones is our 

Soft GoLive. As already reported in 

the Bürklin Elektronik Quarterly 

#02/2021, we will have a comprehensive 

pilot and test phase with selected 

customers before the system 

changeover. During this phase, we 

would like to take the time to incorporate 

all valuable customer feedback 

into the project as needed. 

Only after completion of this relevant 

milestone, we will tackle the final 

one - the GoLive. But you can already 

look forward to it - dear customers 

and suppliers! We will inform you in 

good time when our Smart Bürklin 

Online Shop will be launched in the

UV expert Hönle has been sourcing high-quality

the electronics professional. The UVC disinfection 

units of the SteriWhite Air Q series are successful 

in preventing infections when used for indoor air. 

Dr. Hönle AG, based in Gilching near Munich, is an 

expert in industrial UV technology. Since 1976, the 

parent company of the Hönle Group, for which around 

600 employees work in 20 subsidiaries worldwide, has 

been developing, manufacturing, and selling high-end 

curing equipment and systems for various markets. 

These range from UV dryers used in printing and coating 

machines to UV units for curing adhesives and sealing

AIR Q-SERIES DISINFECT THE AIR QUIETLY, 

RELIABLY AND WITH HIGH EFFECTIVENESS 

The Corona pandemic has brought the transmission of 

infection by aerosols and thus the importance of disinfected 

indoor air for preventing infection to the attention 

of society for the first time. With more than 30 years of 

experience in the field of UVC disinfection, Dr. Hönle AG 

has developed the SteriWhite Air Q series of mobile air 

purifiers, which are a fast, safe, and effective solution 

for indoor air disinfection. 

SteriWhite Air Q units are available in four versions, 

which differ in air flow rate per hour (115 – 900 m³/h) 

and thus in size. All models reliably inactivate viruses, 

bacteria and other germs in the air and reduce the 

germ load of indoor air sustainably and inconspicuously. 

Because with a sound pressure level of only 35 to 39 

db(A), they are demonstrably below the concentration 

threshold. 

The SteriWhite Air Q is available as a stand-alone unit 

or for wall or ceiling mounting. It meets the highest 

photobiological safety standards and produces neither 

ozone nor other harmful substances. Lamp replacement 

is simple and is only required after 16,000 hours of 

operation. No other maintenance is needed.

During the global 

COVID-19 pandemic, the 

world has become more 

sensitive to the subject 

of “clean air.” After this 

past year and a half and 

the various phases of the 

pandemic, ensuring a 

healthy working environment 

is not only desirable 

but, in many cases, 

non-negotiable. Workplace 

air mainly is contaminated 

by dust, micro-dust 

and gases generated by 

many processes, including 

soldering and rework, 

gluing, solvents, conformal 

coating, MEK, VOC, and 

more. However, Weller’s 

fume extraction and filtering 

systems are designed 

to make breathable air in 

the workplace healthier by 

eliminating those harmful 

substances from the areas 

covered by suction arms 

such as hoses, tubes/arms 

and hoods. While 100% 

efficiency against nanomolecular 

viruses such 

as the Coronavirus (0.12 

µm) is not possible, the 

HEPA H13 filters that many 

Weller fume extraction 

systems are equipped with 

significantly reduce the 

presence of these 

molecules in the 

air (efficiency 

>99.955% in MPPS for 0.16 

µm particles and >99.994% 

for 0.3 µm particles). 

Ensuring greater air purity 

in operators’ work areas 

undoubtedly improves their 

comfort and eliminates the 

risk of possible lung irritation 

or allergic reactions 

caused by fumes, which 

can weaken the body and 

immune system, making 

them more susceptible to 

possible contagion, as well 

as known serious diseases. 

Weller filters are available 

in a range of types 

and classes because they 

are not only developed 

for soldering applications 

(although this remains the 

core business), but 

also for bonding, painting, 

resin coating, marking/ 

engraving/welding/laser 

cutting, medical, cosmetic, 

dermo-aesthetic use and 

more. 

The Weller filtration process 

starts with a prefilter, 

which is a classic cloth 

filter of M5 or F7 class, 

whose main purpose is to 

block micro-dust, fibres, 

pollen, bacteria and 

pigments between 5-10 

µm, and prevent clogging 

of the more efficient, 

expensive main filter. For 

applications with high dust 

content, sticky residues 

or stray sparks, there are 

several specific prefilters 

available to optimise the 

efficiency and durability of 

the filtration 

system. 

The main filter is the most 

important part of the filter 

system because it blocks 

particulate matter that has 

not been intercepted by the 

prefilter as well as harmful 

gases that are difficult to 

filter. This filter is available 

in High Efficiency Particulate 

Air (HEPA) class 

H13, a very high efficiency 

class also called “absolute 

filters.” It also is available 

in other classes for a spectrum 

of applications such 

as bonding, resin coating 

and cleanroom as well as 

for chemicals like methyl 

ethyl ketone (MEK), solvents 

and volatile organic 

compounds (VOC). Within 

the range of Weller filtration 

units, the size and 

capacity of the filters vary 

and, consequently, the 

useable life of the filters 

differs. 

In addition to the HEPA 

filter, the main filter also 

consists of a granular 

filter of activated carbon, 

potassium permanganate 

or a combination of both. 

In some applications, the 

HEPA filter is not needed 

while in others a second 

one is used (e.g. for clean 

rooms). The oxidising 

chemical reaction of the 

granules achieves high 

levels of gas filtration. 

However, the maximum 

life of a filter is always 

12 months from first use 

because the filter media 

degrades when it is unpacked 

and used in the 

filtration unit. Generally, 

the less frequently prefilters 

are changed, the 

shorter the life of the main 

filter. Most Weller filtration 

units warn of near-clogged 

filters, resulting in prefilters 

being replaced in time 

and allowing the full 12 

months of use for the main 

filter. If, once the prefilter 

has been replaced, the 

alarm remains active, it is 

a sign that the main filter 

also must be replaced. 

Due to high filter efficiency 

and the change warning, 

Weller units have the advantage 

of safely recirculating 

filtered and, therefore, 

purified air into the work 

area at room temperature, 

avoiding the waste of 

cooled (in warm months) or 

heated (in cold months) air. 

Some models provide the 

option to exhaust the air 

outside if preferred. 

A range of accessories 

completes the range. In 

addition to the above-mentioned 

and extremely important 

filters, Weller has 

a comprehensive catalogue 

that includes various solutions 

for arms of different 

lengths and diameters, 

hoods and nozzles, hoses, 

connectors and adapters 

for installation, cabinets, 

hoods and more. 

All Weller filtration systems 

are CE-approved and the 

accessories that are

Vector network analyzers are perfect 

for analyzing passive or active 

components, such as filters, amplifiers, 

mixers and multiport modules. 

However, low frequency component 

designers’ requirements include 

lower start frequencies – sometimes 

even down to a few Hertz. Traditional 

network analyzers usually have start 

frequencies in the kHz range.

response on your oscilloscope 

with the R&S ® RTx-K36 frequency 

response analysis (Bode plot) 

option. Characterize the frequency 

response of a variety of electronics, 

including passive filters and amplifier 

circuits. The R&S ® RTx-K36 

frequency response analysis (Bode 

plot) option uses the oscilloscope’s 

built-in waveform generator to create 

stimulus signals ranging from 10 Hz 

to 25 MHz. Measuring the ratio of the 

stimulus signal and the output signal 

of the DUT at each test frequency, 

the oscilloscope plots gain and 

phase logarithmically. 

MEASUREMENT SETUP 

The frequency response of RF networks 

is defined as the ratio between 

the output signal (termed as B wave) 

over the injected signal (termed as A 

wave). 

Measuring the frequency response of 

a network requires a source generating 

signals across certain frequencies. 

The amplitude and phase of the 

input signal as well as at the output 

of the DUT must be measured for the 

calculation. 

Use the Bode plot application to turn 

your Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscope 

into a frequency response analyzer. 

DEVICE SETUP 

Connect the oscilloscope’s generator 

and one oscilloscope channel to the 

DUT input, and another oscilloscope 

channel to the DUT output. Start the 

application: 

- Set start and stop frequency 

between 10 Hz and 25 MHz 

and determine the generator 

utput level. 

- Set the points per decade to 

improve and modify the resolution 

of your acquisition. The oscilloscope 

supports up to 500 points 

per decade. 

- For analyzing the phase and gain 

shift of digital filters, the 

R&S ® RTx-K36 option allows you 

to set an additional hold off time 

before each decade step. 

- Press run to start your measurement. 

The measurement results 

are plotted as gain/phase over 

frequency. Set your markers 

to your point of interest. 

MEASUREMENT RESULTS 

Gain and phase waveforms displayed 

in the Bode plots represent the 

transmission function of the DUT. 

Gain shows the amplitude frequency 

response frequency range in dB. The 

phase waveform displays the phase 

characteristics over frequency, measured 

in degrees. 

Drag markers to the desired positions 

directly on the plotted trace. A 

legend displays the coordinates of 

the markers. To determine the cutoff 

frequency of a low pass filter, activate 

two markers. The cutoff frequency is 

defined as the frequency for which 

the output of the circuit is 3 dB below 

the nominal passband value. 

SUMMARY 

Engineers use oscilloscopes as a 

primary measurement tool. Equip

If you troubleshoot or maintain 

equipment in an industrial setting, 

staying safe depends partly on the 

environment and partly on you. You

TOP TIPS WHEN SPECIFYING 

SMALL ELECTRONIC ENCLOSURES 

Your new project has been designed, prototyped, debugged, tested, tweaked, tested again and finally 

signed off for production. In the ideal world, the enclosure would have been selected far earlier in the 

process, but the first question after design finalisation is normally, “what size box do I need?” 

1. SIZE 

How big is the PCB? Is it to be mounted 

horizontally or vertically? Many 

plastic enclosures have slots in the 

sides for direct vertical mounting 

and mounting bosses in the top and 

base for horizontal mounting. Extruded 

aluminium enclosures will often 

have slots in the sides for horizontal 

PCB mounting. How much space 

does there need to be on the faces 

for indicators, switches, connectors, 

cable entries and similar components? 

What height is required for 

board-mounted components or 

multiple horizontal boards? 

2. INSTALLED ENVIRONMENT 

Will the product be used inside or 

outside? Will the ingress of dust and 

water be something to be considered 

– see Point 4 below. Are there likely 

to be contaminants present – oils, 

chemicals and so on. Is impact resistance 

a consideration? If so, metal 

enclosures are better than plastic 

ones. Are particularly high or low 

temperature expected? 

3. MATERIAL 

For small enclosures, the choice is 

mainly between ABS or polycarbonate 

plastic, aluminium and GRP. 

For outside installation, polycarbonate 

or GRP are the default choices 

for UV stability. Fire resistance is a 

consideration; the relevant standard 

is UL94, which specifies a vertical 

or horizontal burn. The more stringent 

test is the vertical burn test; 

material will be classified as V0, V1 

or V2 where V0 is the highest performance. 

Aluminium enclosures are either 

die-cast or extruded. Both are robust 

and give good impact resistance, 

they do not corrode and are electrically 

conductive and are easily machined. 

With a suitable gasket fitted 

between the lid and the base, sealing 

to IP68 can be easily achieved. 

4. EMC 

Plastic enclosures have one specific 

weakness: they offer no EMC attenuation. 

If EMC is a potential problem, 

internal coatings in a variety of 

materials can be applied to a plastic 

enclosure to give different degrees 

of attenuation. 

Metal enclosures, providing that 

there is electrical continuity between 

the top, base and removable panels, 

will provide an attenuation level suitable 

for the majority of commercial 

applications. 

5. ENVIRONMENTAL SEALING 

The relevant international standard 

is EN 60529, which defines ratings 

written as IPxx, where the first digit 

defines the protection against solid 

objects and the second the protection 

against water ingress. 

Typically, IP54 enclosures are suitable 

for general purpose use; for 

installation in environments where 

dust and water are likely to be present, 

IP66, 67 or 68 would be specified. 

The highest rating is IP69K, 

which gives protection against steam 

cleaning at high pressure.

keypads and displays. Aluminium 

enclosures can be painted or 

anodised in different colours. 

7. DISTRIBUTOR TECHNICAL 

SUPPORT 

Distributors keep extensive stocks 

of standard enclosures on the shelf, 

and they are now joining manufacturers 

in providing technical support to 

their customers at the design stage 

to help specify the most appropriate 

enclosure.

Can there really be such a thing? 

A hand screwdriver with almost 

unbelievable speed that works very 

precisely and also enables powerful 

final screwdriving. 

The Wera Kraftform Turbo screwdriver 

set can speed up screwing by a 

factor of 4. In order to quadruple the 

screwing speed, the Tool Rebels from 

Wera have designed a turbo gear that 

can be switched on or off as desired. 

The turbo gear is made possible by a 

particularly sophisticated planetary 

gear that is located in the handle of 

the screwdriver. 

The Kraftform Turbo speeds up 

screwdriving in a purely mechanical 

way. Additional batteries are not 

necessary. The best use of the function 

is always possible when smoothrunning 

screw connections have 

to be mastered. The turbo function 

can be deactivated at the touch of a 

button for hard-to-turn screws (e.g. 

in wood). This deactivation of the 

turbo gear is also recommended for 

fine adjustment or for final tightening

The planetary gear is made of steel 

and is therefore practically maintenance-free.

speedE ® II electric screwdriver. Faster, stronger and 

more versatile in design, the new generation of the 

electric screwdriver now promises even more advantages 

in use. 

The Wiha speedE ® II has two material protection levels 

of 0.4 Nm and 1 Nm, which opens up a new range of 

applications. Thanks to its voltage-safe slimBit change 

system (up to 1,000 V AC), the ‚Made in Germany‘ 

novelty offers offers users maximum safety, flexibility 

and freedom of choice in everyday professional life. 

Its worldwide unique mode of operation is characterised 

by intuitive and simple operability: First, screwing is 

done automatically 3 times as fast as with a conventional 

screwdriver, then the material protection stop kicks in. 

Particularly in the case of sensitive screwdriving, where 

the screwdriver has to be used sensitively, excessive 

force transmission can quickly lead to material damage. 

Therefore, the 0.4 Nm power level should be selected in 

these applications. 

With the shift position to the 1.0 Nm level, speedE 

speedE ® II can now also be used in combination with the 

yellow Power slimBits as a tool for screwdriving tasks 

with higher tasks requiring more force, e.g. for screwing 

larger threaded of larger threaded screws, for example. 

Finally, the screw can be sensitively tightened manually 

in both material protection levels. 

The ring switch makes it easy to operate in all working 

positions. A ring LED light illuminates the working area 

to the maximum, which further simplifies the user‘s 

work and prevents shadows from forming on the workpiece. 

The red and yellow slimBits are all individually 

tested at 10,000 V AC, approved up to 1,000 V AC and, 

with their signal colour, serve as an aid to selecting the 

correct force level. For sensitive, more delicate screw 

connections, small screw profiles are usually used. The 

matching slimBits show the user with their red colour 

that he should set the material protection level to the 

red, 0.4 Nm level for this application. For stronger screw 

connections with larger profiles, the yellow colour of the 

corresponding slimBits shows that the slider can also be 

set to yellow and thus to a strong 1.0 Nm. 

Professionals who often use screwdrivers continuously 

are relieved of a great deal of strain and muscle stress 

by using the ergonomically designed speedE ® II, as the 

strength-sapping screwing process by hand is no longer 

necessary. Muscles and tendons in the hands, arms and 

the entire musculoskeletal system are less strained, 

which leads to a noticeable improvement in health 

for users in many professions who use conventional 

screwdriving tools on a daily basis. This is why it is also
