Thursday October 21 2021 The Star Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz LETTERS 19 Unite – and God defend New Zealand I UNDERSTAND the American Indians were native, indigenous to America. I understand the Aborigines were native, indigenous to Australia. But I’m struggling to understand who is indigenous to New Zealand. It’s well known and documented that Maori arrived on four canoes and the British on four ships, so why is one called indigenous and the other not? Neither of these groups were initially born here. So why favour one over the other? Both boat people have settled, made lives for themselves, generated incomes and are therefore entitled to call New Zealand home. We are one – or we were one. The powerful words of our national anthem boast not only a free land, but release from dissension, envy, hate and corruption. Surely these words must be revived, and our nation united again. Preach love and truth, not hate and division. Our land is full of many great blessings to be shared by us all, the custodians. We can be one again. Unite and God defend New Zealand. –J. L McKenzie St Albans Aotearoa Changing the name of our country to Aotearoa will never ever be a priority for our Government. Governments never lead on major issues and always follow, often suggesting that they were the ones driving the issue when they never are. I am happy to be an Aotearoean, what is wrong with that? The Maori language has no ‘s’ and I’d like to suggest that Tom Delamore do a little reading of what was stolen from the indigenous people of our country. The simple answers is Kiwis, just like today. –Mel Bonner Queenspark Unless we want to become a totalitarian nation that forces needles into arms there is not much more we can do. Some doctors, nurses and other health workers as well as some teachers will be losing their jobs because they refuse to have this treatment. They have spent years studying to gain their qualifications so do not make these decisions lightly. Most people are sick of hearing about Covid all the time and simply want to get on with life. Forget level 1, how about level 0. Whenever we open up there will be more cases but according to Healthline, 80 per cent of those cases won’t realise they even have the virus. Of the remaining 20 per cent, a small percentage will need hospital care. I am sure that by now all those who are at risk have had the shot and have all the protection it affords, so the hospitalisations should be at a minimum. Life has never been risk free so let’s open up, throw away our masks, and begin to live again. –D Downward Covid jabs We have had incentives, super 63 Saturday x with bouncy 180 castles and prizes, all to encourage people to get the Covid-19 injection. Cost of living The chickens are now starting to come home to roost. The price of fuel is going up by the day, which will reflect in the cost of transport, food, building materials, etc. The Government kicked out the oil companies and stopped exploration in New Zealand – and it is looking like the Marsden Point oil refinery is about to be closed so the oil companies will no longer care for New Zealand. To add to this, international freight costs have increased 280 per cent this year, so we are going to get well and truly screwed.
