Longrunning golf event raises $24,000<br />
Twenty years since it’s<br />
inception, golfers playinginthe<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Charity Golf Classic<br />
this year were also playing for<br />
the inauguralRodger Bradford<br />
Memorial Trophy.<br />
Thetrophy, won by ateam<br />
from BrophyKnight,weighs<br />
more than 10kg, and wasmade<br />
by stafffrom Bradfordsin<br />
memory of Mr Bradford who<br />
died in November last year.<br />
It was created from apieceof<br />
precast concreteslab, sits on an<br />
oak base and is topped with a<br />
brasscoloured golf clubhead,<br />
sourced fromMrBradford’s<br />
personal golf clubs.<br />
TheBradfordGroup<br />
alongsideBrophy Knight Ltd<br />
were among the founding<br />
sponsors of thegolf<br />
tournament, and alongside<br />
fellowsponsor Placemakers<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> helped to raise more<br />
than $24,000 forcharity at this<br />
year’s event;$19,000 for Cancer<br />
Society and$5,000for Hospice<br />
Mid Canterbury.<br />
The fun,social tournament <br />
which includedstaff, friends<br />
and clients who enjoyed the<br />
networkingopportunity as<br />
much asthe golf was limited<br />
to just 84 playersthis yeardue<br />
to covid,insteadofthe usual<br />
120.<br />
It saw playersenjoy apacked<br />
lunch oncourseand<br />
refreshments delivered<br />
around the coursebygolf carts<br />
beforeenjoying asit downspit<br />
roast eveningmeal.<br />
Moneywas raised through<br />
entry fees, rafflesmostly sold<br />
on theday andanauction<br />
which included muchsoughtaftergolfing<br />
packages in<br />
Queenstownand at Clearwater<br />
Golf Club, as wellassigned All<br />
Black jerseys and acatering<br />
barbecuecrewpackage.<br />

classes<br />
popular<br />
In normal times some 24<br />
strengths and balancing<br />
classes are held around the<br />
district aimed at older<br />
people. The classes support<br />
afalls prevention<br />
programme promoted<br />
through Safe Communities<br />
and help seniors stay<br />
flexible and mobile. An<br />
estimated 600 people take<br />
part.<br />
Covid has put the brakes<br />
on the classes in recent<br />
times and numbers have<br />
dropped off with social<br />
distancing rules in place.<br />
Once back in Level 1the<br />
classes will be promoted<br />
again.<br />
METHVEN BRIEFS<br />
CEMETERYTREES<br />
Amacrocarpa is thelast of anumber<br />
of treestaken out of Methven<br />
Cemetery becauseofwind damage.<br />
Big windsinSeptemberdamaged<br />
treesand forced<strong>Ashburton</strong>District<br />
Council (ADC) intoabig clean up<br />
operation. Harvested treeswere due<br />
to be sold.Anewstrategic/<br />
development plan for the cemetery,<br />
including additional internment<br />
capacity, arealigned driveway and<br />
new nativeplantings, will be tabled at<br />
the nextMethven Community Board<br />
meeting.<br />
BABYCHANGE<br />
Babychange tables have been<br />
purchasedand will be installed in the<br />
publictoiletsoff Main Street, Methven.<br />
The tables will be located in boththe<br />
men’s andwomen’sfacilities.<br />
BUILD CONSENTS<br />
The value of building consentsin<br />
Methven for theperiod January to<br />
August this year is $4,661,104.The<br />
figurecompares to $1,938,22for the<br />
sameperiodin2020. For the eight<br />
months of this year atotalof29<br />
consents were issues, comparedwith<br />
18 in the previous year. In August<br />
nearly $1.1m of work was consented.<br />
Theyear to datetotal doesnot include<br />
consents issued for the Thyme Stream<br />
subdivisionof$1.95m, which sits<br />
outside of the township boundary.<br />
PIPE SHED<br />
Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) staff<br />
will assess the conditionofthe historic<br />
pipe shed located in apaddock near<br />
the GardenOfHarmony.Once the<br />
safety aspects havebeenconfirmed,<br />
includingthe base, planswill progress<br />
for fencing aroundthe shedand a<br />
formal path.ADC and the RDRhave<br />
reached an agreement to fundvarious<br />
aspects of the projectand the shedwill<br />
stay in its current location.Methven’s<br />
pipe shed is avisible representativeof<br />
the RDRand is madefrom oneofthe<br />
large circular concrete pipesmade for<br />
the scheme. There are no known<br />
examples of other buildings being<br />
constructed of concrete pipes<br />
elsewhere in New Zealandand the<br />
shedisaCategory 1listing with<br />
Heritage New Zealand.
