Congratulations<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>College Summer and Winter<br />
Sports and Cultural Colours and Blues Awards<br />
As with 2020, due to COVID restrictions,the Summer Awards Assembly was<br />
unable to be held,meaning last week’s eventincorporatedpresentations of<br />
both Summer and Winter Awards.<br />
However, as everyone is aware, we were unable to hold awhole-College<br />
Assembly due to COVID-19 Level2restrictions.<br />
This eventwas held in the College Auditorium on Thursday28October,with<br />
recipients only and the minimum level of relevant staff present. However,<br />
the occasion was recorded and individual photographs taken of each<br />
student, plus relevantgroup photos.<br />
Details on howtoaccess these photos have been forwarded to families.<br />
Colours Awards<br />
Colours Awards are presented tostudents who are either national<br />
champions or whohavebeen selected foranational sports team or are<br />
amember of national cultural group.<br />
AColours Award isrecognised asthe most prestigious of the Awards<br />
process. Students who receiveaColours Awarddonot receiveaBlues<br />
Award. Unlike the Blues Award the Colours Awards are not confined<br />
only to <strong>Ashburton</strong>College-basedactivities.<br />
Fifteen Recipients were awarded aColour for this year and, atthe<br />
assembly the following were acknowledged:<br />
Brought forwardfrom2020 -<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Cadet Unit - Marc Calzada, Maria Costas (Year 13 studentin<br />
2020 -now left College), Elizabeth Hastie, Calais Hill (Year 13 student<br />
2020 -now left College), Brodyn Gabites, Eli Orena, May Penjueli,<br />
Sebastian VanRooyen, Markus White.<br />
In 2020 the team competed at the West Melton Rifle Range against the<br />
other South Island Units for the Southern Area Trophy which they won<br />
resoundingly.<br />
Following this, it was a short turnaround to prepare for the National<br />
Competition against the two winning teams from the North Island’s<br />
Northernand Centralareas.<br />
For this competition they flew on an Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF)<br />
Hercules to the RNZAF Base in Auckland,overLabour Weekend.<br />
Competing in fourteen separateactivities, thereweresix compelling wins by<br />
WarrantOfficer Class 2Maria Costas; in the Navigation Theory, Observation<br />
Skills,Weapon Safety,Shooting,Drill and the Kitcheck.<br />
Second places, with some of them extremely close, gained in another six<br />
activities ensured theteam took the win.<br />
They were ecstatic to take the NationalTitle for the first time in the history<br />
of <strong>Ashburton</strong> Cadet Unit, this being the only piece ofsilverware the unit<br />
had yettowin.<br />

<strong>2021</strong> Recipients<br />
Basketball<br />
RileySa<br />
Amember ofthe AshColl Senior ABoys’starting five, Most Valuable Player,<br />
and top scorer for the Thomson Trophy, Riley was also amember of the<br />
Canterbury Under 17 team that went ontowin Nationals. His on-court<br />
achievements have earned him atrial for the New Zealand Under 17 team<br />
this month.<br />
Hard working dedicated and talented, Riley is setting the example for<br />
younger players to aspireto.<br />
Karate<br />
Tayla Davidson<br />
Tayla competed at the Karate New Zealand Open during April with<br />
outstanding results.<br />
In the 14-15 Year Old Girls’PremierDivision Tayla gained Gold in the Kumite<br />
category, and Silver in the Kata.<br />
She also gained Silver in the Team Kumite,for 14-17 Year Old Girls.<br />
This was followed upwith further medals in both the Kumite and Kata<br />
categories at the Canterbury/Westland Championships.<br />
RugbyLeague<br />
Delta Taeauga<br />
Earlier this year Delta was selected for the New Zealand Physical Disability<br />
Rugby League Team. He travelled to Auckland in May for atraining camp<br />
followedupwith another in Christchurch in August.<br />
Not only is this ahigh achievement, but Delta is the only school-aged player<br />
in theteam.<br />
He will travel toWarrington, England in <strong>November</strong> for the Rugby League<br />
WorldCup and will compete forthe title along with England,Wales, Australia<br />
and Scotland.<br />
SmallboreRifle Shooting CharlotteMcKenzie<br />
<strong>2021</strong> has been agreat year for Charlotte. In February she competed inthe<br />
National Outdoor Championships resulting in Representative Selection to<br />
the:<br />
• New Zealand Women’s Team (against Great Britain, United States of<br />
America and South Africa)<br />
• New Zealand Junior Team (against Australia)<br />
• New Zealand Junior Women’s Team (against Australia)<br />
• South Island Open Team<br />
• South Island Women’s Team<br />
• South Island Junior Team<br />
• Mid Canterbury Open Team<br />
• Mid Canterbury Junior Team –South Island Junior Champions<br />
This was topped off with New Zealand Honours as aNew Zealand Junior<br />
(Under 21).<br />
Swimming<br />
Hannah King<br />
Hannah has had a stellar year in the pool. She was in the Top 3 in the<br />
Canterbury Long Course Championships and South Island Short Course<br />
Championships.<br />
She capped this off with a3rd placing at the Aon New Zealand Age Group<br />
Championships and placed 2nd at the Apollo Projects New Zealand Short<br />
Course SwimmingChampionships.<br />
However, it wasatNationalsthatHannah produced one of the swims of the<br />
Championship to win the 200 metreBreaststrokeFinal forher age group.<br />
Waterskiing<br />
Harriet Hill<br />
Harriet competed over the six-day New Zealand National Waterski<br />
Tournamentheld at Lake WiritoainWhanganui over Easter.<br />
Harriet, aYear 9student, was skiing as part ofthe twenty two-strong<br />
Canterburyteam andwas super-excited to win thejump forthe Junior Girls<br />
and receivethe Gold Medaland Trophy.<br />
Harriet also gained the BronzeMedal in the Overall Categoryfor the Junior<br />
Girls’Team Shield.<br />

<strong>2021</strong> Summer and Winter Blues Awards<br />
In establishing Award recipients, each sport has specific criteria that is<br />
used as aguide for nominators. A select committee then discusses the<br />
nominations and makes final decisions.<br />
Seventy-seven students were acknowledged across Sports and Cultural<br />
activities.<br />
In acknowledging students’ successes we recognise the impressive<br />
accomplishments of our students, and contributions of all, within<br />
and outside of the College, for their time and effort given tosomany<br />
College teams and students through cultural and sports activities. These<br />
contributions to the successes of College individuals and teams aregreatly<br />

Principal’s Commendations<br />
Further to the Colours and Blues Awards additional recognitions<br />
were made on Wednesday 03<strong>November</strong>. Again, in accordance with<br />
COVID-19 constraints, the traditional House Assembly presentations<br />
were replaced by Senior Staff presenting the awards in Akoclasses.<br />
Eighty four of these presentations were Performance Awards over twenty<br />
three categories this year. Principal’s Commendations will be reported on<br />
in our next newsletter.<br />
