(I did have an explanation once from a Mathematician that explained why this phenomena is actually areality, but Iwon’t bore youwith thereasoning). Final Dayfor Year 13 Students Today isthe final day for our Year 13 students and their last dayoffive years at Ashburton College,orsecondaryschooling if theydidn’t startatCollege. This particular year group is one I’m fond of simply because all of us started together as ‘newbies’onthe first day of2017. They were clearly nervous and excited and, truth betold, Iheld similar feelings (even though Ihad been aPrincipal in twoother schools). This particular year group started asapproximately 270 Year 9students, with 140officially graduating from College today. Thebalancehavetaken advantage of the numerous employment opportunities on offer in our region, andare alreadyworking. To OurGraduates To our graduates today-wewish youwell.It’sbeenfantastic having you all as part ofAshColl. Wherever you gointhe future I’m confident that your time herewill have helpedtostand youingoodstead. EmploymentOpportunities Speaking of employment -there iscertainly plenty on offer here for our students. Our local employers are now coming to us and seeking their future employees,beforelooking via differentavenues. Last week there were fourteen jobs on offer to our students, advertised in the Student Daily notices. Ofthese, ten were permanent and these included six apprenticeships. Our AshColl students are extremely fortunate tohave so many opportunities. Year 11 and Year 12 Prize-Givings Next week we have our Year 11 and 12 prize-givings here atCollege in our Auditorium. Unfortunately these ceremonies could also be considered as ‘COVID Casualties’. As has beenstatedinprevious newsletters,and in information to families, to fit the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education guidelines our prize-giving celebrations have had to be majorlyreduced. These are attended by prize-winners only (to keep the numbers under 100). There will be no parents, caregivers, supporters or entertainment, and they are held in our Auditorium rather than at the Ashburton Trust EventCentre. This is just another example of howadaptable schools needtobeinthese COVID times. Asadvertised,all prize-givingsare being videoedand each recipient photographed asthey receive their award. The footage and photos will be availabletoview via alink which willbesentout to families and College supporters,soyou canwatchthe ceremonyatatime to suit you, andwhānau. Staff Appointments –and DeputyPrincipal Appointment Finally it is avery busy time of year for schools as we seek toappoint for2022. Wehavethe customary retirement, promotions and departures thatyou expectwith ateachingstaff of ninety. An essential piece of the puzzle fell into place recently with the appointmentofaDeputyPrincipal to replaceRon Cresswell. We have appointed Hannibal Ikahihifo to this position. He is an experienced Deputy Principal with strengths in student pastoral care. We had fourteen applicants for this position, with at least eight of them considered before weshortlisted tofour, all of whom could have undertaken the position. We look forwardtowelcoming Hannibal andhis whānau in thenew year. Ross Preece Principal •Tumuaki Staff -Farewell Kyle Henderson Kyle Hendersoncame to AshburtonCollegeinApril of 2018, fromWellington via the West Coast,toafixed-termposition as ateacher of English. Kyle possesses apassionfor narrativeinall forms, areal interest in interactive storytelling and abelief that mutual trust and respect develops positive relationships with students. He came, also, with a wide range of previous vocational experience including work within the corporateand public sectors and military service. Outside ofthe classroom Kyle coached the well-performed College Junior Boys’Cricket Team, which he thoroughly enjoyed. This past week he also proffered his hair to the in-College ‘Shave foraCure’ fundraiser. This he may find mildly chilly asheheads south to the Winton area! We thank Kyle for his time given to College and wish him well in his future endeavours. TheAshColl Way Appreciation Donation to SupportCollege Visually Impaired Students The College’s Mainstream Learning Support Team is very grateful for the generous donation allowing for the purchase of two i-pads which will go alongwaytoassistingnot onlyour studentswith vision impairmentscurrently enrolled,but other students in thefuture. Juliet Johnstone, College’s Learning Support Co-ordinator, advises that i-pad use can assist students in the classroom by enabling them to take photographsofwritingand diagrams on whiteboards,and then being able to enlarge theworkonthe i-pad in order to see it better. Having up-to-date technologyinthe classroom is vitaltoensuring lowvision studentsare able to access the curriculumalongside their peers. There are many different apps that can be downloaded to assist vision impaired students and, additionally, vision screening tests specifically designed for i-pads that help identify students with visual processingissues andallowthem to seek further treatment. In the classroom, students can also utilise the voicecommand function, Siri, perform tasks andspeech-to-textsoftware. Presentation On Thursday 28 October Alan Hall, Vice Chairman of the Ashburton CommunityCommittee forBlindLow Vision NewZealand, visited College to make the presentation to Juliet. These are now ready for our current students to makeuse of. Not having previously had i-pads available to low vision students, this donation was described by Juliet as ahighlight ofthe year. The i-pads remain theproperty of Ashburton College,for use with studentsinensuing years and arefor use on-site at College. Alan Hall noted their support, often of adults, but less-so within schools for students and that this prompted their investigation into what would most assist students. Ashburton College Individual Excellence in aSupportive Learning Environment News Issue 37 11 November 2021 Congratulations AshburtonCollege Summer and Winter Sports and Cultural Colours and Blues Awards As with 2020, due to COVID restrictions,the Summer Awards Assembly was unable to be held,meaning last week’s eventincorporatedpresentations of both Summer and Winter Awards. However, as everyone is aware, we were unable to hold awhole-College Assembly due to COVID-19 Level2restrictions. This eventwas held in the College Auditorium on Thursday28October,with recipients only and the minimum level of relevant staff present. However, the occasion was recorded and individual photographs taken of each student, plus relevantgroup photos. Details on howtoaccess these photos have been forwarded to families. Colours Awards Colours Awards are presented tostudents who are either national champions or whohavebeen selected foranational sports team or are amember of national cultural group. AColours Award isrecognised asthe most prestigious of the Awards process. Students who receiveaColours Awarddonot receiveaBlues Award. Unlike the Blues Award the Colours Awards are not confined only to AshburtonCollege-basedactivities. Fifteen Recipients were awarded aColour for this year and, atthe assembly the following were acknowledged: Brought forwardfrom2020 - AshburtonCadet Unit - Marc Calzada, Maria Costas (Year 13 studentin 2020 -now left College), Elizabeth Hastie, Calais Hill (Year 13 student 2020 -now left College), Brodyn Gabites, Eli Orena, May Penjueli, Sebastian VanRooyen, Markus White. In 2020 the team competed at the West Melton Rifle Range against the other South Island Units for the Southern Area Trophy which they won resoundingly. Following this, it was a short turnaround to prepare for the National Competition against the two winning teams from the North Island’s Northernand Centralareas. For this competition they flew on an Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Hercules to the RNZAF Base in Auckland,overLabour Weekend. Competing in fourteen separateactivities, thereweresix compelling wins by WarrantOfficer Class 2Maria Costas; in the Navigation Theory, Observation Skills,Weapon Safety,Shooting,Drill and the Kitcheck. Second places, with some of them extremely close, gained in another six activities ensured theteam took the win. They were ecstatic to take the NationalTitle for the first time in the history of Ashburton Cadet Unit, this being the only piece ofsilverware the unit had yettowin. (Absent from the photowere): MayPenjueliand Sebastian VanRooyen. 2021 Recipients Basketball RileySa Amember ofthe AshColl Senior ABoys’starting five, Most Valuable Player, and top scorer for the Thomson Trophy, Riley was also amember of the Canterbury Under 17 team that went ontowin Nationals. His on-court achievements have earned him atrial for the New Zealand Under 17 team this month. Hard working dedicated and talented, Riley is setting the example for younger players to aspireto. Karate Tayla Davidson Tayla competed at the Karate New Zealand Open during April with outstanding results. In the 14-15 Year Old Girls’PremierDivision Tayla gained Gold in the Kumite category, and Silver in the Kata. She also gained Silver in the Team Kumite,for 14-17 Year Old Girls. This was followed upwith further medals in both the Kumite and Kata categories at the Canterbury/Westland Championships. RugbyLeague Delta Taeauga Earlier this year Delta was selected for the New Zealand Physical Disability Rugby League Team. He travelled to Auckland in May for atraining camp followedupwith another in Christchurch in August. Not only is this ahigh achievement, but Delta is the only school-aged player in theteam. He will travel toWarrington, England in November for the Rugby League WorldCup and will compete forthe title along with England,Wales, Australia and Scotland. SmallboreRifle Shooting CharlotteMcKenzie 2021 has been agreat year for Charlotte. In February she competed inthe National Outdoor Championships resulting in Representative Selection to the: • New Zealand Women’s Team (against Great Britain, United States of America and South Africa) • New Zealand Junior Team (against Australia) • New Zealand Junior Women’s Team (against Australia) • South Island Open Team • South Island Women’s Team • South Island Junior Team • Mid Canterbury Open Team • Mid Canterbury Junior Team –South Island Junior Champions This was topped off with New Zealand Honours as aNew Zealand Junior (Under 21). Swimming Hannah King Hannah has had a stellar year in the pool. She was in the Top 3 in the Canterbury Long Course Championships and South Island Short Course Championships. She capped this off with a3rd placing at the Aon New Zealand Age Group Championships and placed 2nd at the Apollo Projects New Zealand Short Course SwimmingChampionships. However, it wasatNationalsthatHannah produced one of the swims of the Championship to win the 200 metreBreaststrokeFinal forher age group. Waterskiing Harriet Hill Harriet competed over the six-day New Zealand National Waterski Tournamentheld at Lake WiritoainWhanganui over Easter. Harriet, aYear 9student, was skiing as part ofthe twenty two-strong Canterburyteam andwas super-excited to win thejump forthe Junior Girls and receivethe Gold Medaland Trophy. A select committee then discusses the nominations and makes final decisions. Seventy-seven students were acknowledged across Sports and Cultural activities. In acknowledging students’ successes we recognise the impressive accomplishments of our students, and contributions of all, within and outside of the College, for their time and effort given tosomany College teams and students through cultural and sports activities. Again, in accordance with COVID-19 constraints, the traditional House Assembly presentations were replaced by Senior Staff presenting the awards in Akoclasses. Eighty four of these presentations were Performance Awards over twenty three categories this year. Principal’s Commendations will be reported on in our next newsletter.
