It will endafour year hiatus which saw them housed, on a temporary basis, at the Ashburton Fire Station, after the initial amalgamation of ruralandurbanfire service. Volunteers at the Ashburton Fire Station will remainatthe Burnett Street station. NewlyappointedAoraki Mid South Canterbury district manager Rob Handssaid the move into the former Burtons Electrical building on Havelock Street in Ashburton was planned for earlynext year. Among theninestaff to move into the office premises were groupmanagers Mike Johns (formerlyof Selwyn) and Paul Manson (formerly of Wellington Newly appointed Aoraki Mid South Canterbury district manager Rob Hands at Ashburton Fire Station. It was also part of aplan to build aunifiednational emergency management organisationtomeetthe changingrisks communities faced in both thebuilt and natural environments. Fire and Emergency New Zealandrecently announced thecreation of 17 new districts to replace the existing24urban areas and18rural fire districts across the country. Underthe newstructure, all brigades and stations sit together under their respective district managers. There were 35 brigadesinthe Aoraki district, with 700 volunteers and37career staff, Mr Hands said. Organisers decided to pull the pin after ameeting last week. Longbeach CoastalChallenge chairman Bruce Kellsaid it had been SINCE 1934 ahard call to make. ‘‘We’ve been waiting and hoping the covidsituation would improve, but with that not happening,we’ve decided to cancelthe challengethis year.’’ Mr Kell said that although athletes started racesinwaves, it was much harder to manage the two prize givings whichwere an important part of the event. ‘‘We’re very much family and community orientatedand to not be able to bring everyone together at the prizegivingswould be such ashame. ‘‘This was set to be our 15thannual eventand we werelookingforward to marking thatmilestone.’’ Mr Kell said organisers were now looking aheadtonext year for the 15th anniversary event and were grateful for the ongoing support of sponsors. The Longbeach Coastal Challenge offers run,walk and biking options across varyingdistances and funds raised are split betweenLongbeach School and HindsLions, which both help to organise and run the event. Over the last12months the $3 million projecthas seenthe church strengthened, repaired and anew extension addedon the south side. The projectwas delayed by covid but was on budget before abig rain storm hit Ashburton at the end of May. The raindeluge revealed aleakingroofand a decisionwas madeto replace the original slate roofwith longrun colour steel. The roofand spouting is over90years old andthe unbudgeted cost of replacing it is ahefty $460,000. Project manager Hayley Groves said thankfully extra fundingfor the project had been sourced from the Methodist Church Property Committee andthe Central South Island Synod. There weredelays with sourcing theblack roofing iron, but work was expected to recommenceonthe project in midJanuary. It was hoped to get the churchopen by winternext year, she said. Mrs Grovessaid there now ashortfall for thefitoutof the church,which included the sound system, seating, paintingand sundryworks. ‘‘Gettingthe workdone will enable the church to functionasapublic facility and it is has always beenthe intention to open it up for community groupstouse.’’ Mrs Grovessaidthe Givealittle page to support the fitout had agoal of $60,000.
