Lynnfield Pioneers looking to end
rollercoaster of a season on high note
BY SAM MINTON
The Lynnfield Pioneers’ 2021 season
has been full of ups and downs, but head
coach Pat Lamusta and his team will be
looking to end the year with a win.
Lynnfield heads into its Thanksgiving
matchup against North Reading with a
4-5 record.
Heading into the matchup, junior
Kevin Connolly said that it’s the biggest
game of the year for the team.
“It’s far bigger than any playoff
game,” he said.
The Pioneers started their season
off with an impressive 28-0 win over
Saugus. Junior quarterback Nick
Razzaboni completed 12-of-18 passes
for 127 yards and a touchdown in the
season opener.
That success continued into Week 2
when Lynnfield defeated Ipswich 33-0.
Junior running back James Sharkey stole
the show against the Tigers with seven
carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.
But the winning stopped there as the
Pioneers went on a five-game losing
streak that included a heartbreaking
loss against Triton. With 1:20 left in the
fourth quarter, the game came down to
one play with the ball on the two-yard
line on fourth down. Lynnfield failed
to complete a pass and went home
empty-handed.
The Pioneers bounced back after the
difficult loss, winning their last two
games heading into Thanksgiving.
Junior Spencer Riley racked up 89
yards on 11 carries in the 28-0 win over
Shawsheen Valley Tech. In the following
week, Sharkey ran for 126 yards and a
touchdown on 11 carries in the 35-14
win over the Georgetown Royals.
Wishing you and yours a
WEEK 1
Aerial attack lifts Lynnfield football over Saugus
By Sam Minton
LYNNFIELD — The
Lynnfield Pioneers showed off
its aerial prowess Friday night,
using the passing game to defeat
the Saugus Sachems 28-0
at Pioneer Stadium.
Lynnfield head coach Pat
Lamusta called Friday’s win
an icebreaker that was well-deserved
after a long summer. “It
was important for the players
to see that their hard work was
going to pay off with a victory
like that,” he said. “Really
pleased with the execution
on defense, (and) on offense.
There’s some little things we
need to clean up moving forward
but overall the enthusiasm, the
excitement, they played with intensity
and that’s what we want.”
After both sides went three
and out to start the game,
Lynnfield drained some clock,
driving down the field thanks
to their passing game. Nick
Razzaboni completed five of
his six passes for 33 yards on
the drive, but James Sharkey
ran the ball into the end zone for
the first touchdown of the night.
Saugus tried to respond with
the ground game, which gave
captain Mark MacEachern a
steady diet of carries, but unfortunately
they were unable to get
past midfield. Things got even
worse as a snap on the punt
went over the punter’s head. On
the next play, captain Spencer
Riley pounded it home to give
the Pioneers a 14-0 lead.
Lynnfield started their first
drive of the second quarter
and didn’t leave the field empty-handed
for a third time. A 37-
yard touchdown pass caught by
Robert Marley gave the Pioneers
a three-touchdown lead.
Razzaboni had a great game
under center for Lynnfield. He
completed 12/18 passes for 127
yards and a touchdown. He threw
some dimes and showed impressive
arm strength; his head coach
was happy with his performance.
“He’s been awesome,” said
Lamusta. “He’s a junior stepping
into the quarterback role
so he has to learn quickly and
he’s definitely showing some
leadership; he’s showing some
creativity. We give him a lot of
leeway to make calls at the line.
I’m really pleased with Nick’s
leadership and how he’s taken
on the role and learned so fast.”
Unfortunately for Saugus, the
second half started just like the
first with the Sachems going
three and out. The team was unable
to get anything going on the
ground and fumbled the snap on
a third down. Lynnfield junior
Charlie Capachietti made them
pay by breaking out for a 62-yard
run to put the Pioneers up 28-0
After the game, Saugus head
coach Steve Cummings tipped
his hat to the Pioneers, saying
they played a great game in his
eyes. With the Sachems having
a younger team, Cummings
stressed that it will take some
time for his side to show their
Lynnfield’s Nick
12-of-18 passes for
127 yards and a
touchdown in a win
over Saugus.
potential.
“We got some young guys that
are just going to get better, better,
and better with the more stuff that
they see,” Cummings said.
Lynnfield (1-0) has a full
week off before hosting
Ipswich on Sept. 24 (7).
Saugus (0-1) hosts Northeast
next Friday (7).
Wishing you a
WEEK 3
THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL
Lynnfield football puts it all
together in blowout win over Ipswich
By Sam Minton
LYNNFIELD — Coach Pat
Lamusta should be happy with his
squad’s effort in all three phases
of the game as the Lynnfield football
team defeated the Ipswich
Tigers 33-0 on Friday evening.
The Tigers started the game off
with a lengthy drive, which lasted
more than eight minutes. The ball
stayed on the ground with Henry
Wright and David Lonergan receiving
a heavy dose of carries.
But the passing game did Ipswich
in with Lynnfield sophomore
Arthur Chiaradonna going on to
snag an interception to give the
Pioneers the ball with 3:45 left in
the first quarter.
Lynnfield’s offense would
make them pay as the Pioneers
quickly made it a 7-0 game thanks
to a 35-yard touchdown pass
from junior Nick Razzaboni that
was caught by Joey Cucciniello.
Friday night was another impressive
game for the junior
quarterback, who continued to
show his ability to make magic
happen with his arm. But it was
junior James Sharkey who was
the talk of the town after racking
up 108 yards rushing and averaging
15 yards a carry; he also
had a touchdown on the evening.
Lamusta described Sharkey as
a runner whose feet don’t stop
moving after the win.
“He’s a north/south guy,” the
coach said. “He’s really a downhill
runner so it was awesome to
see him capitalize on those runs
today.”
Ipswich would get the ball on
its own 31 to start their second
drive of the game with 2:32
left in the first quarter, but they
wouldn’t have the ball long as
the Tigers fumbled the ball on
a reverse and the Pioneers Jack
Phelps recovered the ball with
FILE PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
Lynnfield’s James Sharkey breaks a tackle during a shutout win over Ipswich Friday night at Pioneer Stadium.
less than a minute left in the
quarter.
Lynnfield carried possession
through the beginning of the
second quarter and got all the
way down to their opponent’s
five-yard line. Unfortunately for
the Pioneers, a fumbled snap
killed their momentum and
Lynnfield wound up turning the
ball over on downs.
Luckily the Pioneer defense
answered the call and caused
Ipswich to go three and out with
seven minutes left in the half.
Lynnfield made quick work of
Ipswich’s defense, as a less than
two-minute drive was capped
off with Spencer Riley running
30 yards into the end zone with
just over five minutes left in the
second quarter. The Pioneers’
front seven brought the pressure
to the Tiger’s offensive line in
the following drive, forcing an
intentional grounding in their
opponent’s end zone; this caused
a safety, giving Lynnfield a 16-0
lead. The half ended with the
score line unchanged.
The Pioneers had a perfect start
to the second half, with Sharkey
scampering for a 54-yard touchdown
run after Lynnfield recovered
Ipswich’s on-side kick
attempt to start the half. The
Pioneers failed to convert the
two-point conversion, giving
them a 22-0 lead with 11 minutes
left in the third quarter.
Lynnfield’s defense came
through again, forcing yet another
three and out from Ipswich
that was capped by a sack from
junior Steven Dreher with nine
minutes left in the third quarter.
Lamusta said his defense had
an awesome performance against
Ipswich.
“It’s a fast defense,” he said.
“We might not be the biggest,
but we are very fortunate to have
some fast, athletic guys on D and
you were able to see that today.”
The Pioneers drove down to
their opponent’s red zone, but
were stopped by the Tigers’ defense,
which forced them to kick
a 22-yard field goal. The kick was
good, courtesy of junior Kevin
Connolly, who gave Lynnfield a
25-0 lead.
Ipswich sustained a long drive
before turning the ball over with
seven seconds left in the third
quarter. It wouldn’t take long for
the Pioneers to score once again
on the ground, as junior Robert
Marley broke off for a 63-yard
rushing touchdown, which gave
Lynnfield a 33-0 lead after a
successful two-point conversion
with 11 minutes left in the game.
Lynnfield is now 2-0 and plays
Newburyport on the road next
Friday (6:30).
Lynnfield football struggles
in road loss to Newburyport
By Mike Alongi
NEWBURYPORT — The
Lynnfield football team was
in a close battle at the halftime
break, but Cape Ann
League foe Newburyport had
other plans in the second
half. The Clippers outscored
Lynnfield 27-6 in the second
half, handing the Pioneers a
34-6 loss on the road.
Newburyport started out
strong when quarterback
Finn Sullivan (17-of 20 for
175 yards and two touchdowns)
found Grant Mosesian
on a 10-yard strike late
in the first quarter. A senior,
Mosesian was his team’s top
target on the night — hauling
in six passes for 85 yards
and a score.
After Sullivan added the
PAT to make it 7-0, however,
both offenses went cold until
the second half.
But Newburyport drove
right down in less than two
minutes to start the third
quarter, and scored on Sullivan’s
first TD run. The
Clippers then capped their
following possession with another
Sullivan scamper, this
one coming from the threeyard-line,
to go up 19-0
Lynnfield did score to make
it a 19-6 game heading into
the fourth, but Sullivan finished
the Clippers ensuing
drive by finding Angus Webster
on a three-yard scoring
strike. It was Webster’s first
career reception.
Later in the quarter, backup
Clippers quarterback
Sean Miles completed his
only pass attempt of the
night to sophomore Logan
Jones. Also his first career
reception for the Clippers,
Jones took that pass 20 yards
to the house for a TD to make
it 34-6.
WEEK 5
Field position woes hurt Lynnfield
football in loss to Hamilton-Wenham
By Mike Alongi
HAMILTON ― It’s hard
to win a football game when
you’re playing most of the
game with your back against
your own end zone, and the
Lynnfield football team found
that out the hard way Saturday
afternoon in a 35-8 loss to
Hamilton-Wenham in a Cape
Ann League matchup.
“The field position battle was
heavily in Hamilton-Wenham’s
favor, and they were able to take
advantage of that all day,” said
Lynnfield coach Pat Lamusta.
“We made some mistakes on
special teams and we just can’t
do that. We need to work on that
phase of the game so we’re not
playing from behind the eight
ball on every drive.”
While the offensive side of the
ball didn’t have many highlights
for Lynnfield, the Pioneers’ defense
saw some strong play
from Nick Marcinowski (seven
tackles, one tackle for loss) and
Spencer Riley (seven tackles).
After a slow start to the game
with both teams exchanging
punts, Hamilton-Wenham got
itself into a great field position
after pinning Lynnfield
deep in its own zone. When
the Generals took over on the
Pioneers’ 25-yard line, it only
took a few plays for running
back Chris Domoracki to break
free for a 10-yard touchdown to
put Hamilton-Wenham on top
7-0.
The next Lynnfield offensive
drive was much of the same,
with the Pioneers pinned deep
at their own five-yard line. A
three-and-out forced another
punt, and Hamilton-Wenham
once again took over at
Lynnfield’s 25. And once again,
it only took Hamilton-Wenham
a few plays to find the end zone
― with Domoracki once again
PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
Lynnfield’s Mekhi Peters, left, and Jack Phelps wrap up Hamilton-Wenham’s Chris Domoracki during a loss Saturday.
punching it in from a few yards
out.
On the ensuing possession
for Lynnfield, quarterback
Nick Razzaboni attempted a
screen pass but it was cut off by
Generals defensive back Zenas
Zhao, who grabbed the interception
and took it back all the
way for a touchdown to make it
21-0.
Things didn’t get any better
for Lynnfield from there, as
the Pioneers had a Hamilton-
Wenham punt bounce off a
player and get recovered by
the Generals. Then, Hamilton-
Wenham quarterback John Ertel
connected with receiver Markus
Nordin ― who made a highlight-reel
catch ― for a 42-yard
touchdown to put the Generals
ahead 28-0.
And even when the Pioneers
were able to punch it deep into
Hamilton-Wenham territory
― like in the final seconds of
the first half when they got inside
the five-yard line ― things
didn’t go right. Lynnfield had a
second-and-goal from the oneyard
line with 15 seconds left,
and Hamilton-Wenham stuffed
the Pioneers on three straight
plays to bring the 28-0 lead into
halftime.
Domoracki added his third
rushing touchdown of the
day for the Generals midway
through the third quarter to
round out the scoring for
Hamilton-Wenham.
It took all the way until the
final two minutes of play for
Lynnfield to get on the scoreboard,
with receiver Brian
Ellis making a leaping touchdown
catch from quarterback
David Tracy with 1:29
remaining to make it a 35-8
game.
Lynnfield (2-2) returns home
Friday (6:30) for its Senior
Night game against Pentucket.
“This senior class has had a
unique career, and they hold a
really special place in my heart
because they’re the first group
of incoming freshmen I had as a
head coach here,” said Lamusta.
“It’s a great group of players
and a great group of men, and
it will be really special to celebrate
them on Friday.”
Bad start dooms Lynnfield football in home loss
By Mike Alongi
LYNNFIELD ― The
Lynnfield football team got off
to a disastrous start and was
never able to recover Friday
night, falling by a score of 27-7
to Pentucket on Senior Night
in a Cape Ann League bout at
Pioneer Stadium.
Prior to the game, the
Pioneers honored their group of
nine seniors ― Brian Ellis, Jack
Phelps, Rupert Thomas, Spencer
Riley, Nick Marcinowski, Gabe
Schmitz, Mehki Peters, Michael
O’Brien, and Donald Sylvester
― for their contributions to
the program over the past four
years.
Lynnfield quarterback David
Tracy completed 10-of-17
passes for 65 yards with one
touchdown and one interception
in the loss, while Riley
was the team’s leading rusher
with 33 rushing yards. Charlie
Cappachetti added a touchdown
reception in the loss.
The Pioneers got off to a truly
unfortunate start. After forcing
a punt and getting pinned deep
in its own zone, Lynnfield fumbled
on a bad snap over Tracy’s
head and Pentucket recovered
the ball in the end zone to go up
7-0. Then, on the ensuing drive,
the Pioneers fumbled again and
Jackson Rich picked the ball
up for Pentucket and raced 35
yards for another score to put
Lynnfield in a 14-0 hole.
But the Pioneers settled down
from there, and once they got
the ball back they started an
extended drive. Lynnfield took
10 plays to drive 70 yards,
eventually finding the end zone
when Tracy hit Cappachetti on
a three-yard slant to make it a
14-7 game.
The score remained there
until the five-minute mark of the
third quarter, when Pentucket
got a big play when quarterback
Chase Dwight threw a 53-yard
pass to get inside the Lynnfield
five. One play later, he punched
it in from four yards out to make
it 20-7.
Pentucket added to its lead
with about two minutes to play
in the third when Dwight hit Che
Condon on a 40-yard touchdown
pass to make it 27-7.
Lynnfield tried to play
catch-up from there, with Tracy
throwing some deep passes
down the field on the next few
drives. It eventually came back
to bite them, as Pentucket came
up with a big interception at the
end of the third to squash any
Pioneer momentum.
The Pioneers continued to try
and push the pace in the fourth
quarter, but one final fumble
with five minutes to play effectively
sealed the win for
Pentucket.
Lynnfield’s Jack Phelps crouches down as he looks for the team
to make a stop.
WEEK 7
Lynnfield struggles in loss to Amesbury
By Mike Alongi
The Lynnfield football team
didn’t quite have its best game
Friday night, coming up short to
Cape Ann league foe Amesbury
by a score of 28-18 on the road.
“It was a tough game out
there for us,” said Lynnfield
coach Pat Lamusta. “We had
some good moments, but we’ve
got to be better as a whole.”
Lynnfield quarterback David
Tracy threw for two touchdowns
and ran for another in
the loss for the Pioneers, while
Joey Cucciniello had more than
150 receiving yards with two
touchdowns.
Both teams got off to a bit of
a slow start, and the school remained
tied at 0-0 at the end of
the first quarter.
But the fireworks started in
the second quarter, as Amesbury
got on the board first when
Luke Arsenault broke free and
scored on a 10-yard touchdown
run to put Amesbury up 8-0.
The Pioneers answered
right back, as Tracy found
Cucciniello for a 53-yard
touchdown bomb to make it an
86 game.
Amesbury was able to grab
one more score before the half,
as Henry O’Neil caught a 32-
yard touchdown pass from
Drew MacDonald to make it a
14-6 game at the break.
After McDonald and O’Neill
connected on a 55-yard touchdown
early in the third quarter
to make it 21-6, Lynnfield’s
offense started driving. The
Pioneers pushed the ball inside
the Amesbury 10-yard line, and
Tracy capped things off when
he rushed one in from five yards
out to make it a 21-12 ballgame.
But in the 4th quarter, Nicholas
Marden scored on a 10-yard run
for Amesbury to go back up by
two scores. Running out of time,
Lynnfield sent another heave for
the end zone, and this time Tracy
and Cucciniello connected on a
79-yard touchdown pass to get
within 10 points at 28-18. But
the Pioneers just couldn’t get
that extra score on the board
and Amesbury was able to run
out the clock and take home the
victory.
Lynnfield (2-4) travels to
Triton Friday (7).
“It’s another tough Cape Ann
Lee game and we’re going to
have to be ready, and we’re
going to have to be ready,” said
Lamusta. “We’re hoping to
close out the season with a conference
win.”
THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL
WEEK 8
Lynnfield football comes up short against Triton
By Sam Minton
BYFIELD — The 13th ranked
(Division 6) Lynnfield Pioneers
football team made the trek up
to Byfield to battle against the
17th ranked (Division 5) Triton
Vikings and went home disappointed
losing 20-14.
Even in the loss, Pioneers head
coach Pat LaMusta was proud of
his team.
“We had some plays where
things weren’t going well and we
jumped right back so I thought
there was this perseverance factor
today with the team,” he said.
Lynnfield took over possession
after a Triton three and out and established
the running game early.
Senior captain Spencer Riley
received the bulk of the carries
with five touches for 32 yards,
but Charlie Capachietti punched it
home from three yards out to give
the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with just
over four minutes left in the first
quarter.
The Vikings regained possession
with 4:30 left in the quarter
and found more success getting
the ball all the way to the red
zone after starting the drive at
their own 34-yard line. A pass
interference call doomed the
Pioneers as Triton quarterback
Max Ciaramitaro tossed a 20-yard
pass to Jared Leonard to even the
score at 7-7 with 11:20 left in the
second quarter.
The second drive for the
Pioneers wasn’t the best as they
went three and out and gave
Triton possession on the 42-yard
line. The Vikings drove 68 yards
down the field and Nathan Miller
powered his way into the red zone
from a couple of yards out to give
Triton a 14-7 lead with 3:44 left
in the half.
Sophomore quarterback David
Tracy began to march the Pioneers
down the field with a 30-yard pass to
Joey Cucciniello but even after two
pass interference calls got Lynnfield
into the red zone, Triton’s defense
answered the bell and forced the
Pioneers to attempt a field goal with
11 seconds left. The kick from over
20-yards out was no good and the
Vikings entered the half with a 14-7
lead.
At the start of the third quarter,
Lynnfield started on its own 20-yardline
but poor field position wasn’t a
problem for the Pioneers. Thanks to
the connection between Tracy and
Cucciniello in the air. After gaining
50 yards in the passing game, Arthur
Chiaradonna ran into the end zone
from 11 yards out to tie the game
with 6:30 left in the third quarter.
After completing a 10-yard pass
to Brian Elliot, the Pioneers were
stonewalled and forced to punt in
their following drive. Triton got
good field possession taking over
at midfield with 10 minutes left in
the fourth quarter. Lynnfield’s defense
came up big as they forced
a punt with less than eight minutes
left in the quarter.
The Pioneers took over possession
at their own 20-yard
line looking to find a crucial
touchdown. Disaster struck for
Lynnfield as Cole Piaseczynski
snagged a pick-six that gave
Triton a 20-14 lead with 5:47 left
in the quarter.
“One of the greatest plays I’ve
ever seen here at Triton,” said
head coach Eric Burgos. “Cole
Piaseczynski is just a grinder, a
workhorse and he did what he is
supposed to do and it showed.”
Sharkey was the star of the
final drive for the Pioneers offense,
He broke off a 40-yard run
after Lynnfield gained possession
as its own 27-yard line and he
continued to get carries as they
got into the red zone.
With 1:20 left, the game came
down to one play with the ball on
the two-yard line on fourth down.
Lynnfield failed to complete a pass
and went home empty-handed.
Lynnfield finishes the regular
season with a 2-5 record.
WEEK 9
Lynnfield football gets back on
winning track, shuts out Shawsheen
BY MIKE ALONGI
BILLERICA — Behind a
relentless offensive attack and
good, hard-nosed defense,
the Lynnfield football team
knocked off Shawsheen Tech by
a score of 28-0 in a non playoff
game on the road at Shawsheen
Tech Friday night.
Senior captain running back
Spencer Riley led the offensive
attack for the Pioneers,
rushing the ball 12 times for
100 yards and a touchdown and
also catching one pass for 35
yards and a touchdown. Junior
running back Robert Marley
also had a solid game, rushing
the ball 11 times for 62 yards
and a touchdown. Sophomore
receiver Kyle Schmitz had two
receptions for 16 yards and a
touchdown.
Winfield also opted to go for
a two-quarterback approach in
Friday night’s game, as junior
Nick Razzaboni and sophomore
David Tracy both saw
time under center. Razzaboni
completed 5-of-11 passes for 84
yards and a touchdown while
also rushing a touchdown in
from one yard out. Tracy also
had a good day, completing
7-of-8 passes for 84 yards and
a touchdown.
The Pioneers opened up
the first drive of the game in
solid fashion, with Riley getting
a handful of carries and
breaking one off for 33 yards.
The run pushed Lynnfield
into the red zone, where
Razzaboni ended up finishing
things off by rushing for a
one-yard touchdown to make
it 7-0.
The next two drives were
filled with mistakes for
Lynnfield’s Spencer Riley runs the ball up the outside.
Lynnfield, with Razzaboni and
Tracy each throwing an interception
on their respective
drives. But after getting a key
fourth-down stop deep in their
own territory, the Pioneers got
the ball back and started driving
again.
Tracy was the star of this
drive for Lynnfield, completing
all seven of his passes on the
drive and working the Pioneers
down the field for more than 75
yards. The drive was capped
off when Tracy hit Schmitz for
a six-yard touchdown pass on a
quick slant to double up the lead
at 14-0.
After taking that lead into the
halftime break, Lynnfield came
out in the second half and shut
the Shawsheen offense down
defensively on the opening
drive. The Pioneers then got
the ball back, and put the ensuing
drive squarely on the
shoulders of Marley. The junior
back carried the ball nine times,
covering 52 yards in total and
capping things off with a oneyard
touchdown run to make it
a 21-0 game.
The fourth quarter was
much of the same, with the
Pioneers’ defense stifling
Shawsheen and the offense
methodically moving the
ball up the field. Lynnfield
rounded out the scoring with
FILE PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
about nine minutes to go in
the game, when Razzaboni
connected with Riley on a
quick screen pass and Riley
rumbled 35 yards for the final
score of the game to make it
28-0.
Lynnfield (3-5) will play its
final game before Thanksgiving
on a short week, traveling
Georgetown Thursday evening
THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL
WEEK 10
Lynnfield football takes down Georgetown
By Mike Alongi
GEORGETOWN — The
Lynnfield football team put
together a solid effort in all
three phases Thursday evening,
as the Pioneers took
down Georgetown by a score
of 35-14 in a non-playoff game
at Georgetown Middle-High
School.
“It may not have been pretty
at times, but we went out there
and made enough plays to take
home the win,” said Lynnfield
coach Pat Lamusta. “We had a
good week in practice and we
really wanted to come out and
win this one, so it was great to
get a good performance from
everyone. “
The ground attack was
once again prominent for the
Pioneers, as junior James
Sharkey was the game’s high
rusher with 130 yards and a
touchdown. Senior captain
Spencer Riley had another big
night with 73 rushing yards and
three touchdowns, while junior
Robert Marley rushed for 58
yards and a touchdown.
But one of the true tests of
the evening was slowing down
Georgetown’s high-powered
passing attack. In the more than
40 plays Georgetown ran on the
night, the Royals only ran the
ball twice.
“You’ve got to give a lot of
credit to Georgetown; that’s
an impressive offense,” said
Lamusta. “But our goal coming
in was to go out there, use our
speed and make place. We had a
discipline week of practice and
we executed the game plan the
way we needed to.”
It was an ugly start to the
game for both teams, as the
two sides exchanged turnovers
in the opening minutes. But
after an interception from Jack
Phelps, the Pioneers set themselves
up in Royals territory.
FILE PHOTO | JAKOB MENENDEZ
Lynnfield’s Robert Marley III points to parents who were waiting on the sideline after running the ball into the endzone.
It took seven plays to find
the end zone from there, with
Riley capping off the drive with
a three-yard touchdown run to
make it a 7-0 game.
But after Tracy threw an interception
in his own territory
early in the second quarter,
Georgetown took advantage.
Senior quarterback Anthony
Plumb aired one out on the first
play and found senior receiver
Jack Lucido for a 32-yard
touchdown; then the two connected
on the two-point conversion
to take a one-point lead.
After losing the ball due to
a fumble on the ensuing drive,
Lynnfield finally started to
build some momentum again
when Anthony Attubato picked
off a pass for the Pioneers.
Riley busted a 24-yard run on
the first play of the drive and
Marley finished things off,
eventually running one in from
11 yards out to retake the lead.
After Tracy hit Joey Cucciniello
for the two-pointer, Lynnfield
took a 15-8 lead into the halftime
break.
The Pioneers then started off
the third quarter with a bang,
getting a 29-yard touchdown
run from Sharkey just 44 seconds
into the frame. Riley
added two more touchdown
runs before the quarter was
over, and the Pioneers coasted
to the victory in the fourth.
Lynnfield (4-5) returns to the
field Thanksgiving morning
(10:30) when it hosts rival
North Reading.
“It’s always a big one against
North Reading, and they’re a
very strong team this year,” said
Lamusta. “We know that we’re
going to have to be a lot better
than we were in this game if we
want to come away with the win
and take back Thanksgiving.”
Lynnfield sends seniors off with
one last winning season
By Mike Alongi
The Lynnfield football team came
into the “Fall Sports II” season this past
spring with a roster full of seniors and
a hunger to finally play football again.
And, in a shortened seven-game season,
the Pioneers made the absolute most of
it.
Behind senior leadership from the likes
of DJ Capachietti, Trent Balian, Bakari
Mitchell and Austin Sutera ― along
with fellow seniors Evan Balian, Jack
Ford, Joe LaFerla, James Considine, Phil
Berquist and Blake Peters ― Lynnfield
went 5-2 in an all-Cape Ann League
schedule.
It started with a big 46-21 win over
Triton in the season opener at home,
where Sutera completed 19-of-22 passes
for 361 yards and six touchdowns ―
three to Ford, two to Mitchell and one to
Peters. Ford had six receptions for 119
yards, while Mitchell had five receptions
for 111 yards. Spencer Riley added nine
tackles and one sack on the defensive
side.
The defense picked up the slack
for Lynnfield in Week 2 against
Newburyport, making a key stand on
fourth down with less than 30 seconds to
play to secure a 13-7 victory. On offense,
Ford had a big game for the second week
in row, hauling in six passes for 150 yards
and both of Lynnfield’s touchdowns.
Sutera completed 13-of-25 passes for
245 yards and two touchdowns, while
Capachietti led the ground attack with
nine carries for 59 yards.
Another defensive win over Pentucket
followed in Week 3, then the Pioneers
pitched a 29-0 shutout over Manchester-
Essex to move to 4-0.
But then came a dose of reality against
another unbeaten team in Ipswich, and
the Pioneers came up on the short end of
a 33-7 loss.
Week 6 was a gut-check game for
Lynnfield and it passed the test, outlasting
Triton in double overtime to pull
out a 30-22 win. Capachietti rushed for
40 yards and two touchdowns in the win,
while Sutera completed 13-of-20 passes
for 145 yards and two touchdowns
while also adding 54 rushing yards.
Mitchell (five receptions for 43 yards)
and Ford (four receptions for 50 yards)
each caught one touchdown in the win,
while Peters added three receptions for
34 yards.
The final game of the season came
against Thanksgiving Day rival North
Reading on April 23, and the Pioneers
couldn’t quite find their offensive
footing in a 12-6 loss. Sutera completed
10-of-15 passes for 70 yards and a
touchdown in the loss, while Sam Gazit
had one reception for 8 yards and one
touchdown. James Considine (three receptions
for 25 yards) and Mitchell (two
receptions for 23 yards) also contributed
to the passing game.
Lynnfield’s Samantha Bunar played soccer last fall before joining the football team in the spring.
By Hannah Chadwick
LYNNFIELD ― Samantha
Bunar is not only a superstar
on the soccer field, but a pro
on the gridiron as well. Due to
COVID-19 and the resulting
change in the scheduled sports
season this past spring and fall,
Bunar was able to play her favorite
sport as well as start a
new one she loved to watch.
Bunar’s love for both football
and soccer started at a very
young age; the LHS senior
said she fell in love watching
the Miami Dolphins football
team with her father every
weekend. From then on, she
and her family always watched
America’s favorite sport.
While she watched football
every weekend, she played
soccer every week. Growing
up, Bunar was thrown into
soccer, she said, but she added
that she began to love it in time.
By the age of 12, she fell into
goalkeeping, which is her position
today.
Bunar has also traveled the
world with soccer, and she
said that having been given the
opportunity to play abroad in
Greece was one of her favorite
memories.
Being a goalkeeper has taught
Bunar many things, including
being self-driven and never settling
for less.
“They always tell you it has
to go through 11 players first,
and that it is a team effort, but
being a goalie, you can’t help
but feel you should’ve done
something different,” she said.
Those two qualities are what
lead her to football, she said.
In the spring of her junior year,
Bunar felt the need to do more
and to widen her horizons.
Luckily, the football season had
changed and moved to spring
due to COVID, which created
the perfect scenario.
Bunar went to the football
coach with a unique proposition
― a spot on the team. She was
then invited to watch a practice
in order to fully commit to the
sport. While there wasn’t much
practice for kickers, Bunar used
that self-driven personality and
created her own workouts and
practices, which she did while
the rest of the team partook in
their other workouts.
In her first game, the pressure
defeated Bunar, leaving her 0-2
in field goals. Instead of becoming
discouraged, it fueled
her to do more.
“I came off and told my
coach, ‘this isn’t me,’” she said.
“I won’t settle for this”.
While she had a great time
with the team, soccer became
her future ― and it’s what she’ll
do when she moves on to college.
Bunar has committed to
the Bates College soccer team
in Lewiston, Maine, where she
will continue to prove her talents
not only to herself, but to
everyone else as well.
SPENSER HASAK
Kevin Connolly: Lynnfield’s
special teams extraordinaire
By Sam Minton
When it comes to kicking and special
teams, it can be an overlooked aspect
of high school football, but Lynnfield
Pioneer junior Kevin Connolly is
showing just how important it can be.
Connolly has been lights out in 2021
converting on 15 of his 17 kicks. He has
also been crucial on the kickoff team as
his average kickoff goes nearly 44 yards,
with his longest kickoff going 60 yards
in the air.
Lynnfield head coach Pat Lamusta
said that having a kicker like Connolly
has added a sense of calm after scoring
touchdowns.
“When we score touchdowns we want
to know that you are going to go and get
that extra point. You want that presence
of mind, that confidence. We’ve gone up
against teams that always go for the two
(points) and we’ve been very fortunate
to have Kevin (Connolly) as an option.
He’s been very close to perfect this year
so he’s done an awesome job.”
The junior played soccer up until sixth
grade and he credits playing the sport for
developing his kicking leg. That same
year he played football for the first time
and he said that he had a natural talent
for kicking.
While most football players are used
to spending a lot of time in the weight
room, Connolly’s weight room is out on
the field. The junior kicks during the entire
offseason to continue to work on his
craft.
“I have a kicking coach that I go to
sometimes when I’m not feeling well or
whatever (and) he can fix me up but I’ll
come out here and practice as much as
some guys would hit the weight room.”
Connolly doesn’t just kick either. He
is a part of other special teams units as
well.
“He’s a very detail-oriented kid too so
I’m hoping we can boot some field goals
in the Thanksgiving game and also next
year we will have him as a senior,” said
the head coach. “So it’s exciting to have
him back.”
One of the more enjoyable parts of the
2021 season has been the fact that it’s
a return to normalcy. Connolly prefers
playing in the fall compared to playing
in the dead of winter with snow on the
ground like the team had to last year.
“Last season was just so bad playing
in February in ankle deep snow out here.
Being out here with my friends as it gets
colder, that’s what I really like, coming
out here, it’s pitch black, it’s fun.”
Connolly says that this team means
the world to him.
“These guys are my family,” he said.
They really are a bunch of my brothers
and there’s 60 of them which is awesome.
It’s just so fun coming out here
on this field every single day with my
family playing football.”
While Connolly enjoys kicking, he
said that he is hoping to be recruited as a
wide receiver in college. Still, the junior
said he would be happy to continue to
kick in college.
Faithfully serving our community, practicing a tradition
of TRUST, CARING and PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.
Congratulations!
on a
great
season!
Spencer Riley laying the boom for the Lynnfield Pioneers
By Sam Minton
Lynnfield Pioneers senior running
back Spencer Riley isn’t afraid of a little
contact.
Riley has been one of the top running
backs for the Pioneers. He leads the
team in rushing touchdowns (5) and has
amassed nearly 295 yards headed into
Lynnfield’s Thanksgiving game against
North Reading.
The Pioneers got off to a good start
this season winning their first two games
of the season by a combined score of
61-0 but also dealt with some low points.
Riley said after some struggles the
team has really been able to pull things
together.
“Definitely started off on a high note
with the two wins,” Riley said when
asked about his season. “Throughout
the (middle) of the season it was tough
taking those losses but I feel as a group,
the seniors, the captains, everybody as a
team has definitely pulled together and
these last two games have gone well for
us.
After being eliminated from the
Division 6 tournament in a heartbreaking
defeat against Triton, Lynnfield has won
its last two games by a large margin once
again with a combined score of 63-14.
Each running back has their own style.
Looking at the pros of today you can
see someone like Austin Eckler use his
speed and agility to get by defenders
while Derrick Henry will run you over
and have you rethinking your career
choices. Riley is definitely someone
who enjoys handing out the physicality
instead of being on the receiving end.
“I definitely like to lower my head and
lay some boom,” Riley said. You know
get somebody on the ground, keep running
over them. I like the hits. I like to
get cheers from the teammates, it’s really
fun.”
Lynnfield head coach Pat Lamusta
described his running style as an “awesome”
mix of patience and power.
“He’s going to get in sync with the
pulling guard when he needs to and
sometimes he’s just going to bury you
for an additional four yards, basically destroying
anyone that comes in his path.”
Lamusta also credited Riley’s ability
to read plays as he is running.
“It’s natural to him,” the coach said.
For the senior, this year’s team isn’t
just a group of guys playing football.
They are family.
“Honestly everybody on this team is a
family member to me,” Riley said. Since
day one they all worked together as a
team and obviously, the hopes have been
up all season, everybody’s energy has
been up too. It’s been really great.
Lynnfield’s
Spencer Riley
rushes the ball.
FILE PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
Lamusta added that Riley is a role
model to everyone in the locker room.
“He has this balance of vocal leadership
and leading by example,” the head
coach said. “He doesn’t overdo it, the
guys respect him. When he starts to talk,
everybody listens and I think the kids really
do look up to him.”
Riley doesn’t know yet if he will be
playing football in college but did mention
he is interested in studying business
after high school. No matter what decision
he makes, Riley will have a family
for life in the Lynnfield football team.
from all of us here at the Essex Media Group
May the blessings of this Thanksgiving
fill your hearts and homes with health and happiness.
Best wishes to all the
North Shore High School teams

SPENSER HASAK
Bishop Fenwick football chasing
down another Super Bowl
BY MIKE ALONGI
PEABODY ― Two years ago, the
Bishop Fenwick football team walked
off the field at Gillette Stadium after
losing the Division 6 Super Bowl to
Ashland. And with a win Friday night
against an undefeated Swampscott team,
the Crusaders will be back in the big
game.
It’s been another strong year for the
Crusaders, who went 7-0 in the spring
and brought that momentum right into
the fall season. Fenwick averaged nearly
40 points per game over its first three
games, setting up a date with perennial
rival St. Mary’s ― which was also undefeated
― in early October. The game
was an instant classic, with the two sides
battling it out to force overtime before
St. Mary’s was able to gut out a 21-19
win at Donaldson Stadium.
But the loss didn’t slow the Crusaders
down, and Fenwick came back the
following week to blow out Cardinal
Spellman 31-0, then followed that up
with a 35-14 win over Archbishop
Williams.
Fenwick dropped to 5-2 after losing a
road game to Bishop Feehan, but that was
the last loss the Crusaders would suffer
to date. After closing the season with a
win over Bishop Stang on Halloween
weekend, Fenwick earned the No. 3 seed
in the Division 5 playoffs and earned a
home game in the opener.
That game also went Fenwick’s way, as
the Crusaders blew out No. 14 Maynard
by a score of 49-14 at Donaldson
Stadium. It was a banner night for senior
quarterback Steven Woods and senior receiver
Jason Romans. Woods completed
10 of his 13 passes for more than 250
yards and six touchdowns. Romans had
a combined four touchdowns and more
than 100 yards receiving.
After No. 11 Hudson upset No.
6 Austin Prep on the other side of
the bracket, Fenwick went into the
Division 5 quarterfinal against another
unfamiliar foe. But it didn’t matter
much to the Crusaders, who rolled
right past the Hawks behind another
stellar performance from the Woods-
Romans duo.
Woods completed 15-of-29 passes for
271 yards and four touchdowns in the
win, while Romans caught five passes
for an eye-popping 174 yards and two
touchdowns. Tight ends Aidan Breen
and Mike Zaimi each caught a touchdown
pass for Fenwick, while running
backs Troy Irizarry and Luke Connolly
each rushed for a touchdown.
The win sets up a date with undefeated
No. 2 Swampscott in the Division
5 semifinal, with the game to be played
at a neutral site in Manning Field.
Nearly equidistant from each school’s
home field, the game has the potential to
be one for the ages ― with the winner
moving on to the Super Bowl at Gillette
Stadium.
Regardless of which way Friday’s
game shakes out, Fenwick is guaranteed
at least one more game when it
hosts Malden Catholic on Thanksgiving
morning at Donaldson Stadium. The
last time the two teams met was on
Thanksgiving Eve in 2019, when
Fenwick rolled to a 46-18 win on the
road.
St. John’s Prep football trying
to make it a three-peat
By Mike Alongi
DANVERS ― The St. John’s Prep
football team knows what it’s like to
play in big games, and the Eagles have
once again put themselves in a position
to play for a Super Bowl title in 2021.
The two-time defending Super Bowl
champions in Division 1, St. John’s Prep
had a middling 3-3 season in the spring
and went 1-3 in Catholic Conference
play. But that didn’t quite carry over
to the fall, as the Eagles opened up the
season with a 47-42 win over a tough
Marshfield team.
But still, the Prep went into its Week
2 game against perennial power Central
Catholic as a home underdog ― not
something the Eagles are used to. St.
John’s showed why it was a mistake
to doubt it, as the team rolled Central
Catholic 49-14.
Both sides of the ball played dominant
football for the Eagles, but it was
the Prep defense that had a truly stellar
game. The Eagles held Central quarterback
Ayden Periera ― who scored 10
total touchdowns in the previous week’s
victory ― to just 59 yards of total offense
and one touchdown.
On the offensive end, the Eagles soared
behind an incredible air attack. Senior
quarterback Jack Perry had arguably the
best game of his career, throwing for 261
yards and a career-high six touchdowns.
Star senior running back James Guy contributed
115 rushing yards, while senior
receiver Jackson Delaney hauled in three
touchdown receptions. Junior receiver
Jesse Ofurie added a pair of touchdown
receptions himself, while junior receiver
Stephon Patrick had one touchdown reception
and senior running back Ryan
Grenier had one rushing touchdown.
Junior defensive back Lucas Verrier also
had himself a big game, kicking seven
PATs and also adding an interception.
Blowout wins over Haverhill (42-
6), Bridgewater Raynham (40-14) and
Malden Catholic (39-21) followed, but
the Eagles were given a dose of reality
in mid-October when Catholic Memorial
came to town and handed them a 38-9
loss. The Prep got back on track with a
win over BC High the following week,
but a poor performance in the regular
season finale led to a loss to St. John’s
(Shrewsbury) and a No. 3 seed in the
Division 1 playoffs.
The Eagles drew No. 14 Shrewsbury
in the playoff opener, and despite
a heavy ground attack from the
Colonials, St. John’s was able to grind
out a 28-0 win and move on to the next
round.
The quarterfinal saw the Prep match
up with No. 6 Wachusett, and the Eagles’
offense came alive. St. John’s Prep
rolled 57-20, as running back Carson
Browne ― who has filled in incredibly
well for the Eagles in the absence of Guy
― rushed for more than 100 yards to
go along with three touchdowns. Perry
continued his stellar senior season by
throwing for more than 200 yards and
three touchdowns while adding a rushing
touchdown as well. Patrick and Delaney
each gathered more than 100 receiving
yards in the win, with Patrick catching
two touchdowns and Delaney catching
one.
The Eagles (8-2) now stand one win
away from another shot at a Super
Bowl, and a rematch with No. 2 Central
Catholic Friday night (7) at Lowell’s
Cawley Stadium is all that stands in the
way.
Whether or not the Prep makes it back
to the Super Bowl, the Eagles will have
at least one more game when they go up
against rival Xaverian on Thanksgiving
morning. After winning the 2019 edition
by a score of 35-0, the Eagles are hoping
to take home a win on the road.
