safe driving tips
Who doesn’t love a great summer road
trip? With summer fast approaching, it’s
time to prepare yourself and your vehicle to
make sure things go smoothly and safely.
Plan your journey
Before setting off, plan your jo urney with
intended rest stops and the route you will
be taking. With many people heading out
on holiday, allow extra time for more traffic
and possible delays. Safety is essential, so
ensure your vehicle is operating correctly.
Check tyre tread and pressure, lights,
brakes, air filter, oil, and top up your
coolant. Ensure you have sufficient fuel/
charge to make it to your first stop. Also,
have a current warrant of fitness, car
registration, and an appropriate driver’s
licence. Finally, have a good night’s sleep
before hitting the road.
Keep distractions to a
minimum
Once you’re ready to go, ensure
everyone in the vehicle is wearing
a seatbelt correctly. Put your cell
phone out of reach and focus on your
driving and surroundings. Also, have
sunglasses handy for road glare and to
prevent eye fatigue. Secure loose items
in your vehicle, as they can become
missiles in an accident. Think of
everyone’s safety and don’t drink and
drive. Watch your speed and following
distances as everyone wants to make
it to their intended destination
without mishap. “The journey is
more important than the destination” is
especially true on a road trip. Pull over and
rest when you need to. Remain calm, be
a courteous driver, be patient, and allow
drivers to merge when needed.
Check weather and road
conditions
Drive to the road conditions, weather,
your vehicle and yourself. Wear
comfortable clothing and appropriate
footwear. When towing, prevent
overloading and place heavy objects
evenly over all of the axles. Check towing
attachments and the safety chain, ensuring
the couplings are connected, and trailer
lights and brakes are working correctly.
Remember, the speed limit with a trailer
is 90 km, so use your rearview mirror and
pull over to avoid holding up traffic.

1. Travel scavenger - have a list of things to
look for, take photos of or collect
2. Oven tray magnet board with magnets to
create pictures and designs.
3. Car colour bingo- watch the colour of
oncoming cars and record on a pre-made
bingo sheet
4. Activity kit with stickers, colouring
pencils, paper, puzzle book, and cards
5. An audiobook with headphones
6. A tablet to watch movies or shows
