the <strong>2021</strong>People’sChoice title.<br />
The award wasannouncedlive<br />
online last week in lieuofanawards<br />
dinner which wasscuttledbyCovid19<br />
restrictions.<br />
The first runner up was Waghorn<br />
Builderswith758 votes, andthe second<br />
runnerupwith 754voteswas So You!<br />
The Dance SockAcademyisthe<br />
brainchild of Jenna McKenzie,the<br />
principalofRangiorabasedJenna<br />
McKenzieSchool of Dance.<br />
Jenna continues to be amazedher<br />
‘‘crazylittle sock idea’’has universal<br />
appeal, and that it wonthe People’s<br />
Choice accolade.<br />

Covid19 has made adefinite impacton<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>businesses in the<br />
past six months according to the latest<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>Business Opinion<br />
Survey.<br />
Thesurvey, released thisweek by<br />
Enterprise<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> (ENC), is<br />
forthe six months to the endofOctober<br />
<strong>2021</strong>.<br />
Theresults showthatathird of<br />
surveyedbusinesses considerCovid19<br />
restrictions to be limiting their ability<br />
to grow.<br />
In addition,profitability has<br />
decreased, costs have increased,and<br />
supply constraints are making things<br />
problematic.<br />
Forty percent of surveyed<br />
businesses saw adrop in profitsover<br />
thepast six months, with 31% noting an<br />
increase.<br />

Fiftyeight percent of businesses<br />
reported an increaseinthe cost of<br />
doingbusiness, with atrickledownto<br />
the consumer,while40% of businesses<br />
reportedanincreaseintheirprices.<br />
Business confidence has also dropped,<br />
with 41% of those surveyedexpecting<br />
the businesssituationtodeteriorate in<br />
the comingsix monthscompared to<br />
just 29% who expect it to improve.<br />
‘‘There’s alot goingonfor ourlocal<br />
businessesrightnow,” says ENC<br />

‘‘In addition to the difficulties<br />
highlightedin thereport, businesses<br />
are dealingwith general uncertainties,<br />
fearofanother lockdownand theflowon<br />
effects fromsupply chainissues.<br />
‘‘As such, thesurveyresults are nota<br />
hugesurprise,’’ saysMrDalton.<br />
“However,despite the current<br />
situation, we notedanincreasein<br />
staffinglevelsoverthe past six months<br />
as well as an increase in thenumber of<br />
businesses investing in buildings,<br />
plant and machinery.<br />
‘‘This showsthatthereisdefinitelya<br />
degree of optimismfor the future.”<br />
