Groundswell protest
successful, well run
With Covidrestrictions there
haven’t been many family events in
the Waimakaririoflate, so it was fun
to take the kids to the Moscow Circus
whileitwas in Woodend recently.
It was greattosee manyother
families makingthe most of the
opportunity to enjoy an outing as we
come to the endofanother
challenging year.
On SundaymorningIjoined the
startofthe Groundswell
Waimakaririprotest as it leftCust
on its waytoChristchurch.
Well done to Shelley Drummond
and her team who organisedanother
successful local Groundswell event.
Iwas encouraged not only by the
number of local residents who took
part,but alsothe supportthey
received, with peoplecheering them
on as they drove past.
Beingpart of the protest in
Memorial Ave in Christchurchwas a
real buzz as manyhad travelled from
differentparts of Canterbury to
show their support for our farmers.
As manywill know, when our
farmers are doing wellweall benefit
in Canterbury.
Ihave recentlybeen appointed to
sit on theselectcommittee of two
Bills whenthey are introducedinto
Parliament:Three Waters and the
Disestablishment of our DHBs.
Both are examples of the
government’splantocentralise our
lives in their beliefthey should be
running the whole country from
Wellington.
I’m pleasedI’ll be able to bring the
local voicesand local views of
Waimakariri to the debate around
the tableinParliament on both
these importantissues for our
district.
Ialwayslove to get out and meet
business owners in the electorate
like Reganand Jo Hartley of
Energised Personal Training in
Kaiapoi, who set up agym space in
their garage so they could work from
home.
Regan and Jo are aclassic
example of acouple who want to cut
down on their overheads and work
for themselves, enjoying their three
daughterswhile they are young.
Itake my hat off to them for
putting in the hard yards. It justgoes
to show, in Waimakaririyou never
know what innovativecommunity
minded business is up adrivewayin
our neighbourhoods.
Police station opens
Rangiora's new policestation is up and
running.
The station at the cornerofSouthern
Cross Roadand Kingsford Smith Drive,
in Southbrook, has amodern
environment for the community, with
plentyoffree parking.
The station willbeatthis location for
the next few years until apermanent
facility is developed, says Inspector
Peter Cooper,Area Commander
Canterbury Rural.
‘‘Finding abuilding suitable for a
temporarystation has been
challenging and although it is not in
the town centre, the new station offers
improved facilitiessostaff can provide
abetter service to the public,’’ he says.
Mr Cooper says apublic counter was
not available at the previous
temporary premises on King Street
since early2020, so it was pleasing to
have amore permanent solution.
The Southern Cross Road location
will be open to the public 9am4pm,
MondaytoFriday.
The community is reminded to call
111 in an emergency.
Incidents that do not require an
immediate Policeresponse can be
reported to 105, either online or over
the phone.
Focus from Dan Gordon, Mayor
Water unites councils
ThreeWaters Reformcontinues to be a
very important issuefor our communities.
Thereisn’taday thatgoes by that Iam
not stopped multiple times on the streetor
contacted by phone or email to hearour
residents concern, angerand frustration at
the Government’s decision to force Three
Waters reform.
Councils acrossNew Zealand are
mobilising and working together to fight
this.
It’s important the Government hearsthe
voiceofour residents.
Thirty Mayors and Councils have jointly
signed aletter to the Prime Minister,
Jacinda Ardern.
We wanttomeet with the Prime Minister
so she hears your voiceand whatmatters
to you.
WaimakaririDistrictCouncilispart of a
groupofcouncils taking the matter to
Court, and we lodgedproceedings in the
High Court aweekago. We are not against
this for thesake of it.
What we do agree on is thatquality
drinkingwaterand betterenvironmental
outcomes are essential, and support the
new waterregulator and coming
regulation.
Who wouldn’t support this?
What we don’t support is the flawed and
now forced fourentity model that takes
control of our assets which, overthe years,
you have paidfor, and also takes away the
localsay.
Our messagetothe Governmentisthis —
pressthe pause button, let the new water
regulator embed, thenget backaround the
table and talk to us about alternative and
viabledelivery models.
We are open to the discussion.
Reformneedstohave the supportof
councils and support of the communities
they serve. Rushed and forcedreform is a
recipefor disaster.
On Sunday Iwas proud to standbeside
fellowMayors MarieBlack fromHurunui
and Craig Mackle from Kaikoura at the
Groundswell event in Amberley, at which
we were invitedtospeak.
The above was our messageonThree
Watersreform. Together, strongly
supported by our councillors, we will do
our utmost to make sure yourvoices are
heard and will work tirelessly to make sure
we get the bestoutcomes possible for you
on ThreeWaters.
We won’t leave any stone unturned in
our questtochangethe Government’s
position.
On FridaynightIhad the honourto
speak at aceremony at Rangiora Cenotaph
and help unveilaWar AnimalMemorial
Plaque.
This is the first cenotaph in New
Zealand to haveaplaque to honour
animals lost in warsand conflicts
throughoutour history.
Special thanks to Thereza Rosanowski,
ClaireHammond and Ann Stewart for
their tireless work in leadingadedicated
group of animallovers to see this project
reach fruition, andfor their efforts in
organisingamovingevent which was a
fitting tribute to our fallen service animals.
Lest we forget.
Health warning
Highlevels of faecal bacteria have
beenfound in the Waipara River at the
BoysBrigade.
Consecutive samples of faecal
bacteria in the water has prompted a
health warning from Community and
Public Health.
Dr Cheryl Brunton, Medical Officer
of Health, says the water is not suitable
for any recreational uses including
swimmingbecause of the risk to health
from the bacteria and other pathogens.
Water contaminated by human or
animal faecal matter may contain a
rangeofdisease causing microorganismssuch
as viruses, bacteria and
protozoa.
In most cases the illhealth effects
from exposure to contaminated water
are minor and shortlived. However,
there is the potentialfor more serious
diseases, suchashepatitis A, or
salmonella infection, Dr Brunton says.
The sites where water quality is
affected are monitored and are listed
on Environment Canterbury's website.
If fish from the river are eaten, remove
the gutand liver and wash the fish in
clean water before cooking. For further
