REGIO
FACTS
For centuries, the Ruhr region stood
for coal mining and for the boom of
the iron and steel industry, whose
furnaces were powered by coal. Due
to structural change, coal mining
came to an end and now the former
extraction sites („collieries“) stand
as industrial monuments.
The largest and most famous is the Zollverein
colliery in Essen, whose winding
tower is the best-known landmark of the
Ruhr region and a symbol of the industrial
culture of an entire region. After its last
shift in 1986, the Zollverein colliery was
transformed into a site for art, culture and
the creative industries, attracting around 1.5
million visitors a year. In 2001 it was designated
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the site offers a variety of discoveries
and exhibitions and, of course, guided tours
that provide a glimpse into the industrial
history of the Ruhr region.
