2022! Hooplah! Here we are...
from
EDITOR
Now that the formalities are out of the way, welcome to issue 26 of Shill
zine. Thirteen weeks running! Hell, that’s longer than most NFT minted
projects!
Thankfully, this zine exists because OF the community out there. You,
the reader! The weekly stats over on YUMPU are just incredible! FWIW,
Issue 23- 1154 reads, Issue 24- 1140 reads, Issue 25- 909 reads. That’s
3203 reads for the week. Pretty f*ing impressive seeing that my goal
was 2000 readers! 5000 readers by June 2022! This can only happen if
you RETWEET the zine across your networks. Well beyond my scope.
Exciting section added to this issue. We have “Shill the Mint”, “URS
Royal Gang” and now we have “Have You Seen It?” after coming across
obscure mints when following a tweet of a tweet of a tweet. Maybe
these artists will stick around? Maybe they are just testing the Solana
waters? Some of the mints I can’t track back to Twitter so I have left
them as a plex link back to their site. Happy to rectify this if you know
the artist.
If you don’t discover a new artist that you haven’t previously considered
then I’d be surprised!
The Gooney project is just bowling me over at the moment. This project
must be working 24/7 to churn out the content that they have. I am
looking forward to their mint (no I don’t have WL or any shit like that, I’m
a pleb like the rest of us!).
I have also included some info about GenesysGo explaining what the
project is about and how their upcoming token IDO will work. I never
touched the project as I had NFI what they were trying to sell as an NFT
GenesysGo
IDO
This article is meant to act as a comprehensive guide to the who, what, why,
and how of GenesysGo.
You will hopefully leave having a better understanding of key concepts such
as: what we’ve built, what we are building, the Tokenomics of the $SHDW
token, and the mechanics of our upcoming IDO.
My name is Frank and I am one of the co-founders of GenesysGo. This
article will, hopefully, shed light on how GenesysGo went from being two best
friends building servers to a team of seven developers, multiple community
managers, and a community of nearly 13,000 in less than a year.
Let’s start with what is currently the most talked about subject as of the
time of this writing… the IDO for our native token $SHDW.
We are pleased to announce that our IDO will be taking place on January
3rd, 2022 at 2pm UTC. During this sale 30,000,000 tokens (15% of the total
supply) will be sold in an IDO which re-uses the same IDO program used by
16
SHILL Issue #25
projects like Aurory and Mango Markets.
After discussing with both the Aurory and Mango teams, we decided
to use this IDO program as it has been incredibly battle tested and
demonstrated itself to be a stable smart contract.
It was also important to us, as the largest RPC provider on Solana, to
power our own IDO. We strongly believe that not powering our own
token drop would be a sign that we don’t have confidence in our own
network… and if we don’t have confidence in our own network then
how can we expect you to?
We’ll return to the IDO and Tokenomics shortly, but let’s take a
moment to set some important context and give a little history
around GenesysGo.
Since April 4th, 2021 GenesysGo has been building and providing
infrastructure to the Solana community. Our validator, the Shadowy
Super Coder DAO validator, (https://solanabeach.io/validator/
AKoVXpZmi8wSz3sGvCYEygbpdHvSRysWsh36b97iPvKh) came
online in early April and we very quickly transitioned to building and
networking RPC servers.
SHILL Issue #25 17
To put it simply, GenesysGo is the infrastructure provider of RPC and
Validator services on the Solana network.
For those who don’t know, RPC servers are the backbone of the Solana
blockchain. They are the traffic controllers of the Solana validator network
and literally every single project building on Solana uses them.
Solana is especially hard on RPC servers because of the sheer throughput
that Solana is capable of. RPC servers are arguably the hardest working
piece of hardware on the Solana chain.
Over the past eight months GenesysGo has been quietly gathering more
and more user traffic and at this point we, conservatively, power over half
of all traffic on Solana.
We built a RPC network that provides unlimited requests per second (any
RPC provider that has a payment model based only around requests
per second is showing a fundamental misunderstanding of how server
resources work), unlimited data, global DNS load balancing for the lowest
latency, and is backed by a network of 300+ bare metal servers in 9
different countries across 3 different continents. We also provide access
to the full ledger history all the way back to Solana’s genesis block.
Because it’s very important to us to establish that we’re not a new project.
We have a well-established product and well established brand. We made
a choice in the beginning (for better or worse) to focus on building rather
18
SHILL Issue #25
than talking about building and there are far too many projects who
keep promising “big announcements” already in the ecosystem.
Steven and I both have backgrounds in b2b sales and we put that
to use by getting out into the Solana community and grinding until
“overtime” just became “normal time”. We developed a very deep
userbase by (as the Solana team loves to say) chewing tons and
tons of glass.
So, as you continue reading and learning, that’s good context to
keep in mind!
Steven and I are the founders and we ran the project for eight
months before bringing anyone on board. GenesysGo was Because
it’s very important to us to establish that we’re not a new project.
We have a well-established product and well established brand.
We made a choice in the beginning (for better or worse) to focus
on building rather than talking about building and there are far too
many projects who keep promising “big announcements” already
in the ecosystem.
Steven has a background in distributed data systems and
geographic information systems, as well as extensive experience
building inside Linux terminals. I have a background in education,
business leadership, and I am self-taught quant trader. Both of our
careers took detours early on into the world of traditional finance
where we both spent many years working as financial planners
and leading business units at large investment firms… which
really just translates to some financial planning and a lot of sales
conversations.
When Steven and I first met we bonded over being the only real
hardcore computer nerds in a building full of finance people. While
we enjoy software, our true passion has always been the hardware
and networking side.
Ever since Nov 3rd though, we have added several new devs to the
core team (including the very exciting pick up of one Mr. https://
twitter.com/GenesysGo/status/1469533663742341123?s=20) in
order to ensure that we can maintain the forward momentum as
we continue to scale in both size and the scope of the platform we
are building.
We hold multiple town halls per month on Zoom and are about as
our houses.
All three of these things are linked. Let’s start with the NFT mint…
The Shadowy Super Coder NFT Mint
https://genesysgo.medium.com/genesysgo-shadowy-super-codernft-collection-80ba8811d4f2
— Rather than retype everything, I’ll
drop the link here for those who haven’t heard of our NFT, its utility,
and want to learn more.
TL:DR; We minted 10,000 SSC NFTs at a price of 2.5 SOL on the very
day that Solana made its all time high and all 10,000 were minted in
less than 9 hours. We were told it couldn’t be done but this is how
much the ecosystem values what we do.
20
SHILL Issue #25
What made the NFT drop even more impressive was the wallet
distribution. https://gist.github.com/levicook/6d7dcf374ece6cb
2d585cd32b07a3e0b#file-ssc-holders-csv — This snapshot is as
of 12/17. Given that our NFT is tied very closely to our seed token
allocation, this means very good things for the project’s Tokenomics
as a whole (obviously, no one can guarantee what the price will do
and, candidly, we are much more focused on building strong utility
for the token).
The top 20 wallets hold only 28% of all the NFTs… this was very
exciting and very important to us as it spreads out the risk curve for
the token overall.
As of 12/17/2021
In fact, the top 120 wallets barely reach 50% ownership of all
Shadowy Super Coder NFTs.
How does the Shadowy Super Coder DAO fit in with GenesysGo?
The SSC DAO has always been meant to be the ultimate custodian
of the network layer that GenesysGo is building. The SSC NFT mint
allowed us the chance to accelerate our ability to execute while
simultaneously bringing together the community that will ultimately
make up the DAO. It is important to note that the DAO is not a fully
functional DAO at this time. The network layer we have built is very
integral to Solana and changes to it must be made very deliberately
and with careful testing. The DAO serving as the foundational
community allows members the ability to understand more about
a layer of the Solana architecture that is fairly complex and not well
understood. This gives the GenesysGo team the ability to make
critical, in the moment, decisions regarding architecture and the
needs of Solana while also allowing DAO members the ability to
observe and learn.
As we achieve the full rollout of the various aspects of our project
(more details below) the DAO will begin taking more of a central role
in the decision making processes, with a central council being the
fiduciaries over the caretaking of the network.
So, what are you building?
Before we talk about the Shadow Protocol, let’s talk about one more
thing related to our existing RPC network.
As you may have read if you read the articles about our NFT mint,
SHILL Is1ue #25 21
our promise to the ecosystem was that if all Shadowy Super Coder
NFTs were minted in the first 24 hours then we would provide the
Solana ecosystem with full RPC network access at no cost until the
end of 2021.
Our NFT was fully minted in less than 9 hours and so, since Nov 3rd
2021, our RPC network has been available at no cost.
We believe the “RPC provider” model is very outdated and it is our
goal to break this model. Between what was generated from our NFT
mint, continued NFT royalties, and the fees from the Shadowy Super
Coder DAO validator node we are able to provide RPC access at no
cost into perpetuity.
Because of our focus on searching out creative revenue sources
other providers don’t utilize, we are able to provide a massive
scalable RPC network without using funds from the upcoming IDO,
which allows us to focus those funds solely on building the first
truly Solana optimized decentralized RPC network and the first truly
Solana optimized decentralized storage layer.
SOLANA ECOSYSTEM 2022
@solana_daily
2021 was a colorful year with the Solana ecosystem.
Our ecosystem has achieved many
remarkable milestones in the market. So,
what’s to come in 2022 in the Solana ecosystem?
SHILL Issue #25 23
Breakdown
By Jacob Van
& Predictions
What is Solana?
Solana is an open-source decentralized blockchain built to enable
scalable, user-friendly apps for the world.
Solana has been dubbed by some as the “Ethereum Killer” because
of its lightning-fast speed and low transaction fees.
The average cost per transaction is around $0.00025 and Solana
processes around 2,100 transactions per second.
Solana Stats
Compare that to ETH, where the average transaction cost fluctuates
between $2-$5 and has been as high as $70. ETH can only process
between 15–45 transactions per second.
How is the Solana network so fast and so cheap? Instead of using
Proof of Work like Ethereum and Bitcoin, Solana uses the consensus
mechanism known as Proof of History (PoH).
According to Solana’s Medium post:
”PoH creates a historical record that proves that an event has occurred
at a specific moment in time. Whereas other blockchains require
validators to talk to one another in order to agree that time has
passed, each Solana validator maintains its own clock by encoding
the passage of time in a simple SHA-256, sequential-hashing verifiable
delay function (VDF).”
That is quite a bit of technical jargon. Check out the tweet below for
a short video that explains PoH well.
Solana Summer
This speed and the cheap transactions have led to an explosion in
popularity and adoption of Solana.
24
SHILL Issue #25
Most of this growth occurred over the summer of 2021, where the
price of SOL went from around $19 in April all the way up to a high of
$259 on November 6th.
This growth was a result of a few factors.
In July 2020, FTX announced that it would build its DEX, Serum, on
top of the Solana network.
This was ground-breaking because it meant the founder of FTX,
Sam Bankman-Fried, was now a supporter of Solana. It is hard to fail
when a billionaire crypto superstar is on your side.
The buy-in from FTX led to Solana Labs striking a deal with some
of the largest VC firms in the world including a16z and Polychain
Capital.
Solana labs completed a $314 Million private token sale with these
VC firms in June of 2021.
This vote of confidence from major VC firms and investors led to the
mass adoption of Solana and an explosion in the SOL ecosystem.
In March of 2021, the Solana ecosystem looked like this.
SHILL Issue #25 25
Just a month later we saw quite a change.
Credit @Solanians_
Today, the Solana ecosystem is massive.
26
SHILL Issue #25
Issues on Solana
But with widespread adoption and rapid growth typically comes
growing pains.
SHILL Issue #25 27
Solana has seen its fair share of issues. The most high-profile
problem the network has faced is network outages.
Back in September Solana faced a 17-hour outage that required
engineers and over 1,000 validators to work together to bring the
network back online.
This led to many critics complaining that Solana has prioritized
speed and scalability over security.
Some even went as far as saying Solana was a scam after the network
faced another issue and was hit with a denial-of-service attack that
slowed the network significantly but did not bring it offline.
Another common complaint about Solana is the lack of
decentralization.
According to Solana Beach, there are currently 1,337 validators
securing the network.
Ethereum currently has 2,600 nodes running on the network, about
double that of Solana.
Decentralization and security are always a top priority for layer 1
networks, but Solana especially needs to ensure they balance these
priorities evenly with speed and scalability.
Solana’s Future
Solana has undoubtedly built a thriving ecosystem of DeFi, NFT, and
gaming projects that have become a staple in the crypto space.
Despite the concerns of security and decentralization, SOL has seen
a 11743.4% gain in the past year.
While it is down 32% from its all-time high price of $259, SOL still has
the potential to grow.
In terms of market cap, SOL is not far off from another layer 1
network that has faced similar complaints regarding centralization
and security issues, the Binance Smart Chain (BNB).
If SOL was able to capture the market cap of BNB, we would see a
price of $288. That is more than reasonable given current market
conditions.
28
SHILL Issue #25
For Solana to catch up to the likes of Ethereum in terms of market
cap, we would have to see even greater adoption take place for
Solana.
Multiple moon shot projects in the ecosystem, like Star Atlas, would
need to exceed expectations in order for SOL to catch up to ETH.
If Solana could become the go-to chain for crypto gaming and/or
the metaverse, Solana could potentially “kill” Ethereum and flip its
market cap.
Otherwise, SOL will probably continue to be in the top 2–3 spots for
layer one networks.
DEEP DIVE
@sleezybees
We did a deep dive on 1/1 NFT artist @itsMcNatt. He was gracious
enough to let us share the parabolic growth he's experienced over
the last few months #SolanaCommunity.
68
SHILL Issue #25
The story of Mcnatt is the story of Solana 1/1s 1st NFT sold =
.5 SOL ($90) Undeterred, the artist kept generating buzz around
a world of intriguing characters. As word got around, so did the
demand. Today, “The King” Sold for 69 SOL ($11,661) How can we
learn from this?
McNatt has been an outspoken and active community member
since the beginning of his career. This helped collectors understand
the man behind the canvas that led to increased awareness of his
pieces. Look at just how active McNatt has been in the space.
SHILL Issue #25 69
It’s no surprise that as more people heard his story, the more collectors
would swarm the auctions. Leading up to the last of the series,
“The King” we can identify the demand created for his more affordable
pieces. A trend we have been noticing in the space.
Auctions are a great way for an artist to reach price discovery and
truly access their NFT’s worth. It’s important for artists to not sell
themselves short. Auctions are perfect for gauging the demand for
your art! After building a community of collectors, celebrate!
What has been most fascinating for the team is the rate of growth
for NFT artists across #solana. This goes to show that investing in
an NFT artist early can truly pay off! The Secondary market for 1/1
NFTs can be found on http://Exchange.art
