PHOTOS: ALEX GRIMSHAW & JOE LEEPER CAMERON Haylock discovered the ‘runners high’ during lockdown – and used that high to run 100km to raise $5500 for Christchurch youth. The Thanks Foundation founder from Sumner has added endurance running to his list of sports. He’s also a surfer, snowboarder and skater and his not-for-profit organisation helps young people in Christchurch access these sports. “I just see how many young people would want to be a part of these sports,” he said. Haylock, along with others from the Thanks Foundation, have started taking young people on weekly skating trips and hope to do the same with surfing and snowboarding. The 30-year-old recently ran the Port Hills Ultra. Leading up to the race, he set up a Givealittle page with a goal of raising $5000. The money will go towards surf equipment to give young people around the city. “We all know the benefit of surfing on your well-being so we want to make sure more and more young people get the opportunity to get out there,” said Haylock. After the lockdown last year, he decided he needed to do something different to “just surfing or drinking coffee” and took up running. “I actually managed to get that thing they call the runners high and then I started educating myself around the endurance and trail-running. I got curious about how far I could push myself physically and mentally,” said Haylock. He pushed himself to his limits three weeks ago in torrential ran and fierce wind. It took him 17 hours and 15 minutes to complete 90km of the 100km ultra run through the Port Hills, but due to freezing and dangerous conditions he had to stop there. “At the end of the day, I was pretty stoked to go that far, it just wasn’t worth it carrying on. I still had the ability to process and analyse what was going on with my body and everything else around me,” said Haylock. He went back last Wednesday to complete the final 10km. The Givealittle page has now raised more than $5500 for the equipment and Haylock is “stoked” with the outcome. He said he sees young people challenging themselves all the time to learn new things and he wants to do the same. “Being the founder of a non for profit I always want to be seen challenging myself mentally, physically, spiritually or emotionally,” he said. Haylock said Thanks Foundation exists to share the power of continuously saying thanks. “Thanks Foundation creates opportunities for young people of all abilities to build stories collectively and individually, intentionally focusing on their mental health and well-being, while having fun,” said Haylock.
