INTERVIEW
and the fact that the
Christmas holidays precede
the New Year’s festivities and
celebrations globally is a
huge plus. The celebration of
Christmas across the globe
is a reflection of love and
selflessness evident in the
teachings and exemplary
lifestyle of Jesus Christ – the
patriarch of the Christian faith.
There is a fundamental
theme of Christmas, which is
‘Giving – not receiving’. During
this period, everyone wants to
get into the full bloom of the
Christmas spirit – and give – no
matter how little. Somehow,
the world just becomes a
better place for all, and we all
suddenly feel more kindly to
each other.
To adequately express the
spirit behind Christmas in plain
terms is to term it a spirit of
giving and sharing. Recently,
a young Nigerian celebrity –
someone whom many critics
claim was an unexpected
source, shocked the world
with a brilliant concept and a
singular act of generosity this
Christmas period. But who is
this young celebrity, and what
did he do?
Who is Davido?
Born David Adedeji Adeleke, but
popularly known by his pseudonym
and stage name – Davido, David
is a Nigerian-American singer,
songwriter, and record producer.
In what has been described
as the modern form of African
Pop music (Afro-Pop), Davido has
perfected the art of blending
traditional African elements with
global mainstream pop to achieve
a unique sound.
Although he was born on
November 21 1992 in Atlanta,
Georgia, United States of America,
his family is a notable Nigerian
family that belongs to the upper
echelon of the Nigerian society.
The Adeleke family boasts of great
politicians and business moguls,
and Davido’s father is currently
the head of the family – and the
wealthiest.
Davido is a tier-1 celebrity in
every right and has remained
relevant since he broke into
the music industry. His worldrecognized
back-to-back hits have
earned him cult status, and he is
currently on the list of top 10 artistes
in Africa at the moment by
every standard.
Davido’s Philanthropic
Lifestyle
Davido is a philanthropist
who leads by example –
something that fans and
society, in general, has used
as a yardstick in judging other
celebrities in the entertainment
industry over time. His trademark
phrase “We rise by lifting others”
has become a household
name in Nigeria and across
Africa.
It has also become a
popular quote for celebrities,
preachers, and motivational
speakers who often use the
‘exemplary lifestyle of Davido
as an example of the blessings
that are associated with giving.
Another aspect that the
“Assurance” crooner has greatly
benefited from is the defense
from fans as a result of his
philanthropy. To many Nigerians,
Davido can do no wrong – and
this further goes on to show how
far good deeds can pave the
way for an individual.
Today, especially in Nigeria,
call on ten random persons to
pick out a celebrity who is a
philanthropist, and you will be
sure to have more than 50% of
them pointing their fingers at the
‘Omo Baba Olowo’ himself.
The Davido 100 Million
Naira Challenge Fund Raiser
Davido broke the internet
a few days before his birthday
when he announced that
he needed his friends and
colleagues in the industry to
make donations to the tune
of one hundred million Naira,
to enable him clear his newly
purchased Rolls Royce car from
the Ports.
Critics attacked the singer
