Suzanne Schwartz’s level of confidence 

has always been a loving point of faux 

contention within her immediate family. 

“My parents would often joke to my 

siblings that if they were able to spread 

my confidence around to them, they probably 

would have raised eight completely 

normal children,” she said with a laugh. 

Schwartz said she makes no apologies 

for having faith in herself, faith in her 

abilities, but even she admits to feeling 

crippling self-doubt from time to time. 

“I am that person that truly is sure I’m 

going to throw a party and no one is going 

to show up,” she said. 

While difficult to shift her mind away 

from the “alone-in-a-beautifully-adornedroom 

with great snacks on the table” 

visualization, she said it is important to 

push through those mental blocks 

because there might be something spectacular 

that later takes place within 

those walls. 

Case in point, the massive celebration 

she helped organize on March 19 at the 

Dodge Community Center in the Hilltop. 

The idea for this party began to take 

form years ago when Schwartz was a program 

lead at the Columbus Recreation 

and Parks Department’s Lazelle Woods 

Community Center. 

“One of my assignments was teaching 

a Girls Empowerment class and I loved 

everything about it,” she said. “We would 

meet once a week and do fun activities, 

try new things without judgement, share 

our experiences, and just have a great 

time bonding with each other.” 

When she transferred to the Far East 

Recreation Center to take the position of 

assistant manager, she helped run their 

program but eventually came to the conclusion 

that this was just not enough.

City tries to curb 

illegal dumping 

The city of Columbus and Central Ohio 

Crime Stoppers are seeking the community’s 

help in identifying suspected illegal 

dumpers caught on camera. The partnership 

is another enforcement tool in Mayor 

Andrew Ginther’s Clean Neighborhoods 

initiative to hold offenders accountable for 

dumping trash and debris in city alleys. 

“Since we launched Clean 

Neighborhoods, the city has committed 

more resources to refuse crews and equipment 

for alley cleanups, expanded our 

Solid Waste Investigator Team and added 

several tools to fight illegal dumping,” said 

Ginther. “By partnering with Crime 

Stoppers, we are adding yet another 

enforcement tool and sending the clear 

message that illegal dumping will not be 

tolerated in Columbus neighborhoods.” 

When residents see an illegal dumping 

site, or see someone dumping construction 

debris or other items not acceptable in city 

residential trash containers, they should 

report it to the city’s 311 Service Center. If

“I thought it would be great to do this 

across the whole department — to do this for 

all the girls of Columbus and all of our 

female staff.” 

Inspired, she began to envision an allday 

program where girls could try new 

activities in a safe and judgement-free 

space. She even knew the best time to have 

it would be during Women’s History Month 

in March. 

In October of 2021, she composed a 

department-wide email: in it, she explained 

her idea for a Girls Empowerment Day 

filled with fun, confidence building programs 

and asked if any other recreation 

leaders would be interested in pitching in 

and helping out. 

“Essentially, I was begging them to join 

my party,” Schwartz said. “It was nervewracking 

to hit that ‘send’ icon.” 

Within 24 hours, she heard back from 80 

percent of the email recipients — all of 

whom gave her a resounding ‘yes.’ 

Quickly, this first annual Girls 

Empowerment Day began to take shape. 

Local businesses committed funds, employees 

of local organizations committed to volunteer 

their time to host programs, and 

female city leaders signed up to speak 

about their experiences in governance (like 

Priscilla Tyson) and other realms. 

With the ‘Future Me’ panel and a host of 

art, health and wellness, and outdoor 

exploration programming in place, then 

came the most difficult part of the planned 

festivities — gauging the interest of the 

community to see if anyone was willing to 

come. 

Once again, Schwartz was certain no 

one was going to show up. 

“I kept watching this little tracker we 

had to see how many people were signing 

up,” she said. 

To her surprise and delight, many were. 

Approximately 80 girls from the ages of 

8-16 participated in the Girls 

Empowerment Day. Among those who 

attended the day-long programming was 

Jamyia Laury, 14, of Columbus. 

Laury said she initially signed up as a 

favor to her younger sister, but quickly fell 

in love with the programming. 

“It reminds me of this girls-only program 

we have after-school, but this one is 

more artsy.” 

She said her favorite part was making 

cards and Seeds of Caring kindness kits for 

children living at the CHOICES for Victims of 

Domestic Violence shelter. 

“The card I made said that their smile is so bright 

that it makes them shine,” she said. “I know they are 

going through a lot and finding a smile can be hard to 

come by. I wanted to remind them to keep their smiles 

because they shine a light in this world.” 

Best friends Elliot Roe and Giuliana Underdown 

said they wanted to attend because it was an event 

that celebrated the female spirit. 

“People, especially boys, don’t appreciate women 

and all that we do and can do,” said Roe, 10. “If there 

were no women, there would be no humanity.” 

Underdown agreed. 

“We can do all this nice, creative stuff and throw

In addition to making cards and journals, they also 

learned a few lessons on faith in yourself through confidence 

building workshops and affirmations. 

“I learned that you can be a friend to everyone, 

including yourself,” said Grace Towns, 9. 

With the immediate success of the Girls 

Empowerment Day program, Schwartz said they hope 

to be able to work off of that momentum and establish 

girls-only programming offshoots throughout the year. 

“We’ll see how it goes, see if anyone is interested in 

going,” she said. 

She has the confidence that they will be.

Westgate Park cleanup events 

Friends of Westgate Park will host a 

spring cleanup day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

March 26 and a park work day from 9 a.m. 

to 12 p.m. April 9. Volunteers for both 

events can meet at the Westgate park 

enclosed shelter house, located at 3271 

Wicklow Road in Columbus. Participants 

will clean up the flower beds, lay mulch, 

plant flowers, and pick up litter.

Fish fry at St. Cecilia 

St. Cecilia’s Knights of Columbus 

Council 5899 will be hosting its annual 

Lenten fish fry at St. Cecilia, 434 Norton 

Road in Columbus. The fish fry will be held 

from 5 to 7:30 p.m. each Friday through 

April 8. There will be an eat-in and drivethrough 

option. The cost is $10 for adults, 

$5 for children, and $36 for a family.

Hilltop Spring Cleanup 

The 20th annual South Central Hilltop 

Spring Cleanup will be held from 11 a.m. to 

1 p.m. April 23. Volunteers will meet at 

Burroughs Park, 551 S. Richardson Ave.

ILLEGAL DUMPING

occurring or try to get a suspect description, 

vehicle description and/or license 

plate information. The city will share photos 

of suspected dumping offenders with 

Central Ohio Crime Stoppers so that residents 

can assist in identifying dumpers 

and holding them accountable. 

Residents who recognize photos of illegal 

dumping suspects posted by Crime 

Stoppers can provide anonymous tips and 

may receive a reward for their assistance. 

Offenders may be criminally charged 

and/or cited for civil violations for illegal 

dumping in Columbus. 

“I am thrilled that Central Ohio Crime 

Stoppers is partnering with the city’s division 

of refuse collection to fight illegal 

dumping activity,” said Central Ohio 

Crime Stoppers President Napoleon Bell. 

“Crime Stoppers is committed to the 

mayor’s Clean Neighborhoods initiative 

and will highlight illegal dumpers in our 

efforts to end littering in our alleys and 

roadways.” 

Five solid-waste investigators in the 

division of refuse collection work with the 

city attorney’s office to build cases and file 

illegal dumping charges in Franklin 

County Municipal Court. The number of 

charges filed and convictions earned has 

been increasing each year, and the partnership 

with Crime Stoppers is expected to 

lead to more dumping convictions and fines 

as well as restitution paid. 

Hilltop Library returns 

to normal hours 

Most of Columbus Metropolitan 

Library’s (CML) 23 locations returned to 

normal hours on March 21. CML reduced 

hours during the COVID-19 pandemic, 

with most locations closing at 7 p.m. 

Monday through Thursday. The Hilltop 

Branch will now be open Monday through 

Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and 

Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 

Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. 

Breakfast at the Lodge 

to benefit Special Olympics 

The Westgate Masonic Lodge #623 is 

preparing breakfasts once a month to benefit 

the Special Olympics. The public is 

invited to have breakfast the second 

Saturday of each month at 2925 West 

Broad St. Adults eat for a donation of $6, 

children age 3 and above pay $3. Serving is 

from 9 a.m. to noon.

“The city attorney’s office is committed 

to holding accountable those who turn our 

neighborhoods into dumping grounds 

through aggressive prosecution,” said 

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein. “The 

partnership the city is announcing will 

only strengthen enforcement, promote 

accountability and further deter illegal 

dumpers from disrupting the quality of life 

in Columbus neighborhoods.” 

The mayor’s 2022 operating budget provides 

funding for three additional rearloader 

refuse trucks for alley cleanups, and 

topping off 300-gallon containers to help 

reduce dumping and limit spillover litter. 

“The department of public service and 

our refuse collection crews appreciate the 

support of Mayor Ginther and city council 

as we are in our neighborhoods every day 

to clean up trash that has been illegally 

dumped,” said Public Service Director 

Jennifer Gallagher. “Our crews have rolled 

up their sleeves and cleaned up almost 

18,000 tons of illegally dumped trash and 

almost 14,000 tires in three years.” 

“The collaboration between Central 

Ohio Crime Stoppers and the division of 

refuse collection is one of many critical 

relationships needed to crack down on illegal 

dumpers and other bad actors,” said 

councilman Emmanuel Remy. “We are 

serious about addressing illegal dumping, 

and I hope this new collaboration becomes 

the resource Columbus residents need to 

help all of us mitigate this behavior.”

Safety and sidewalks discussed in PT 

Crime was at the top of the agenda at a 

recent Prairie Township board meeting. 

Deputy Burton Haren, with the 

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, discussed 

an increase they are seeing in firearms 

theft, as well as what residents can do to 

protect themselves. 

“Please write the serial numbers down 

of your firearms,” said Haren. “We also 

keep seeing a rise in thefts from vehicles. 

Please do not leave valuables in your vehicle.” 

Burton encouraged residents to join the 

Citizens Academy. 

“This academy gives a little insight into 

what we do on a day-to-day basis and is a 

great training session,” he said. 

New medic 

The board approved purchasing a new 

medic for the Prairie Township Fire 

Department. Fire Chief Allen Scott asked 

the board to approve the purchase of a new 

medical vehicle from Horton Emergency 

Vehicles. 

“The cost of the vehicle will be no more 

than $270,000,” Scott said. “As of this 

morning, the quote is $268,551. There are 

some additional discounts which may 

apply. There are also additional, nominal 

fees, which may accompany design 

changes.” 

The new medic will replace a 2006 vehicle 

with 190,000 miles. Fees for equipment, 

graphics, and radios will be presented for 

board approval closer to the delivery date, 

in the spring of 2023. 

Sidewalk program 

The board moved forward with the 2022 

sidewalk program and approved contracting 

with Berkshire Boys Inc. 

“This year the minimum cost per 

address is $1,500,” said Dave McAninch, 

interim administrator for the township. “I 

also recommend we pick up where we left 

off after 2019 with walking and identifying 

sidewalks that do not meet our established 

criteria.” 

The program, which replaces dangerous 

sidewalks in the township, has been taking 

place for more than 15 years. 

The program offers township property 

owners a 10-year interest free loan to 

repair their sidewalks. The loans are added 

to the property taxes of residents and paid 

off over a decade. 

Previously the program was voluntary, 

but in recent years the township added a 

component to the program where they 

make residents replace sidewalks that are 

dangerous. Also, residents can report sidewalks 

that need to be repaired. 

In 2020 and 2021 the program was 

made all voluntary as a result of the financial 

situation many Americans are facing 

due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, this 

year the program will go back to being 

involuntary.

English Learners reach 

proficient level status in SWCS

A record number of students who have 

previously been identified as English 

Learners have exited the program in the 

South-Western City Schools District. 

Officials say those numbers are a reflection 

of the strength of the program rather than 

an indicator of a decline in its overall EL 

population. 

There are approximately 3,500 students 

in the district who are currently identified 

as English Learners — the second most in 

the state, said district officials. 

That number would be much higher, 

explained EL program coordinator Ed 

Kennedy, but nearly 2,000 previously identified 

EL students have now reached proficient 

level status in their second language 

acquisition. 

“That is a genuine indicator that we are 

making progress as a program,” he said 

during a board of education meeting on 

March 21. 

A little more than 50 percent of the EL 

population comes to the district at a “newcomer” 

level. 

“Newcomer typically means they are at 

a younger age, primarily around the elementary 

level, and have little understanding 

of the English language,” he said after 

the meeting. 

Kennedy said younger students can be 

like sponges, able to pick up new language 

skills within a few years. 

“If they spend one to two years in a new 

country, the spoken part is going to be pretty 

good.” 

He said within five to seven years, they 

begin to better develop cognitive academic 

language proficiency (CALP), such as being 

able to read textbooks, understand tests, 

and produce written language. 

Kennedy said the district provides 

intentional instruction — such as pairing 

EL students with peers who also speak 

their first language — so they can achieve 

basic interpersonal communication skills 

(BICS) and CALP within the typical development 

range. 

The challenge the district has, said 

Kennedy, is helping “adolescent newcomers” 

reach proficiency within that time 

frame. 

“Some of our EL students come to us as 

teenagers and we do not have them for five 

to seven years,” he said. 

He added that research indicates it typically 

takes 7-12 years for adolescent newcomers 

to reach CALP. 

When it comes to this demographic, 

Kennedy said the district is “all hands-ondeck” 

so they can at least get them to the 

BICS level. 

“They have to get to BICS before they 

can reach CALP,” he said. “But we are committed 

to doing all that we can to get our 

EL students to proficient status in the second 

language acquisition.” 

During the EL program presentation on 

March 21, Kennedy also shared a snapshot 

of the spoken languages and dialects within 

the district. He said there are currently 

78 different languages and dialects spoken 

by the students. 

Of those numbers, the four largest language 

groups are Spanish at 71 percent; 

Somali and Arabic at 20 percent; Hakha 

Chin at 4 percent; and Ukrainian at 3 percent. 

Kennedy said the district could very 

likely see an increase in the Ukrainian 

population within 15 months due to the 

millions of Ukrainians fleeing the war. He 

said they are currently working with CRIS, 

the Community Refugee and Immigration 

Services, to get programming in place.

Charming cast helps 

“e Lost City” shine

Star charisma may be able to elevate a movie, but that factor 

alone cannot make the experience of watching it enjoyable. If that 

were the case, there would be so many more good movies out there 

in the world — and so few actors employed in the industry. 

“The Lost City” is a film that features stars with charisma, but 

it does not require them to do the heavy lifting. Instead, its smart 

and self-aware script works in tandem with the talent of its 

actors, making this throwback action-adventure romantic comedy 

one of the most joyous — and enjoyable — theatrical experiences of 

the year. 

“The Lost City” follows best-selling romance author Loretta 

Sage (Sandra Bullock) as she tries to put the finishing touches on 

the latest installment of her popular Lovemore and Dash series. 

At this point in her career, all she wants to do is kill off her 

beloved leads and live a life of solitude as she mourns the unexpected 

death of her archeologist husband. 

With the prompting of her pushy manager Beth (Da’Vine Joy 

Randolph), she is able to wrap up the series and even commit to a 

small book tour. But any good feelings she may have felt regarding 

the final book release and tour are squashed when she learns 

she has to work alongside Alan (Channing Tatum), the himbo

To put it lightly, Loretta cannot stand Alan, aka a “mouthbreathing 

body wash commercial.” Not only does she feel as if he 

takes his job too seriously — she constantly critiques his penchant 

to refer to himself as Dash outside of his book modeling work — but 

she also feels as if he makes every shared public appearance 

revolve around him. 

While Loretta sees this event as “all about Alan,” he does try to 

turn the attention back to her, especially since he has something 

of a secret crush on the surly and reclusive author. It’s a good 

thing too that he pays close attention to her because he is the only 

witness to her abduction by eccentric billionaire Abigail Fairfax 

(Daniel Radcliffe). 

To Abigail Fairfax, Loretta is not just another author of “sad 

and vapid lady fantasies.” Instead, he believes she has first-hand 

knowledge of a lost tomb in a lost city that is rumored to harbor a 

lost priceless artifact known as The Crown of Fire. The reason he 

believes this? Because she wrote about it in her last Lovemore and 

Dash novel. 

Though she tries to tell him he is mistaken, that these books 

are just a work of fiction, he flies off with her to this nearly uninhabited 

island so she can get to work deciphering found ancient 

text that was inexplicably published in her book. 

While Loretta is dealing with this latest misadventure somewhere 

in the Atlantic, Alan is mounting a rescue mission somewhere 

in the States. Though considered by many to be dim, he 

does have the good sense to ask for assistance from a former Navy 

SEAL turned meditation instructor (played by Brad Pitt) though 

those plans are quickly upended. With no survival skills, no fighting 

skills, and no real life skills at his disposal, it is up to Alan’s 

unrequited love for Loretta to save the day — and hopefully their 

lives in the process. 

“The Lost City” has a lot going for it: an absurdly charming 

cast, genuinely funny moments and some great scenes of adventure 

that reminded me of the short-lived television series 

“Legends of the Hidden Temple.” The best part of this film, however, 

is the chemistry of the ensemble and not just the chemistry 

between its main stars, which frankly could have used a little 

more heat. But every single member of the cast works collaboratively 

to bring this smart and self-aware script to life which in 

turn brought forth a real joy to the overall film. It looked like they 

had a blast making this movie and I believe the majority of the 

audience will not be able to not get caught up in their enthusiasm 

for the project as well.
