Heritage events<br />

The South Charleston Heritage Commission<br />

is gearing up for several events this<br />

year.<br />

• Tour of Churches. Sue Mattinson, Heritage<br />

Commission trustee, will lead a free<br />

walking tour of churches at 2 p.m. May 1.<br />

The tour starts at St. Charles Borromeo<br />

Catholic Church, 31 S. Chillicothe St., then<br />

moves on to South Charleston United<br />

Methodist Church at the corner of Church<br />

and Jamestown streets, and ends at First<br />

Presbyterian Church, 15 N. Chillicothe St.<br />

At each stop, Mattinson will provide a<br />

brief introduction, a church representative<br />

will share some history, and tour participants<br />

will have time to walk around the<br />

sanctuary. Refreshments will be served at<br />

First Presbyterian Church which is celebrating<br />

its 200th anniversary this year.<br />

• Women of South Charleston. Sue Mattinson<br />

had originally prepared this talk for<br />

2020, the 100th year since women received<br />

the right to vote. The pandemic derailed<br />

those plans. The talk is back on for this year<br />

and tentatively set for 2 p.m. July 10 at the<br />

Opera House located on the second floor of<br />

South Charleston’s town hall. The new stair<br />

lift is operational, making the program accessible<br />

to everyone. The program is free.<br />

Donations will be accepted but are not required.<br />

Proceeds go toward the maintenance<br />

of the historic opera house, train depot and<br />

log house.<br />

• Heritage Days Festival. This year’s festival<br />

will be one day, instead of two, and is<br />

set for Sept. 24.<br />

Houston Library<br />

offers Easter fun<br />

Houston Library, 5 W. Jamestown St.,<br />

South Charleston, offers the following activities.<br />

• Storytimes. Every Thursday through<br />

May 19 at 11 a.m. for 2- to 4-year-olds.<br />

• Lego Club. Second Monday of each<br />

month, <strong>April</strong> 11 and May 9, for school-aged<br />

children only, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Show off your<br />

creativity. All supplies are provided. Creations<br />

will be left on display at the library<br />

until the following month.<br />

• Easter Fun Family Night. <strong>April</strong> 12 at 6<br />

p.m. For families with children of all ages.<br />

activities, like Peeps Catapult and<br />

Funny Bunny Faces. Make a Bunny Corner<br />

bookmark to take home.<br />
