We hope youenjoyedthe Easter break.AsHughand
Fi emerged from isolation last weekend, they were
surprised at how busy the town was. After amixed
season, the farmers markethad agood crowd forits
final day. We are glad to be hearing anecdotes of
retailers enjoying good trading too.
Last weekend was one of the few times that the
threeAbrahamicreligions have hadtheirmain festival
at the same time.Sunday was, of course, Easter Sunday,
thoughthe orthodoxchurches will not celebrateEaster
until this Sunday, 24April. Meanwhile, our Jewish
friends celebrate Pesach (Passover) between 15 and
23 April. We arealso in the middle of the Muslim holy
fast of Ramadan, whichbegan on 1Apriland willend
on the evening of Sunday1May.Ramadan is governed
by alunar calendar,soitmovesthroughout the year.
We pray ablessing on adherents to all faiths as we
emerge from this holy season.
To our readers along the North Road and beyond
the 50kmzoneonCox Street, we regret that our friends
at the Ashburton Courier were unable to give usthe
agreed-upon bundle to deliver to you. It was not for
want of trying on their part, but the printing industry
is under tremendous pressure. We read on
Printweek.com, Printers andprint buyers areindespair
after theFinnish PaperworkersUnion rejected strike
settlement proposals The strike, which began on
1January, is projected tocontinue until atleast 14
May. Inour interconnected world, astrike inFinland
is one of the reasons paper is costing so much here
on the other side of the world.
Friday is Poppy Day, with Anzac Day on Monday.
As reportedinGNews (07.04.22), given the demographic
of the majority ofRSA members, the Anzac Day
commemorations will be pared back. It is suggested
that we can visit the various war memorials at our
leisure and place our poppies inprivate acts of
remembrance.
Meanwhile, our communityisbeing warned not to
be complacent about mask-wearing. While infection
rates inAuckland are declining rapidly, here inthe
south, we areatthe peak.Weare also told to expect
along tail.
Stay warm and safe. HUGH &FI
They shall grow not old, as we
that are left grow old; age shall
not weary them, nor the years
condemn. At the going down of
the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them.
