As proxy law-enforcers, did they never have to utter the ominous words, Im just doing myjob? Or hear them from vaccinators when only the impending calamityofbecomingincomeless drove workers to the chair? What of security guards outsidelibraries and the humiliation of being threatened with removal by policeorbeing trespassed from premises so familiar to them? But,worst of all, aretheyunawareofthe ignominy of belonging to agroup that was legally ostracised and whose exclusion wassanctioned and encouraged by the most powerful and respected forces in the land? The tsunami we were drilled to fear fortwo years has washed around our ankles. We will recoverfrom this small wave. But the devastation caused by the accompanying seismic upheaval remains and has changed our social landscape forever. PHOTOS: Gideon Snow Two out ofthree agood result Saturday 9 April saw abeautiful day at Raukāpuka Reserve with three games on offer: GERALDINE WAHINE TOOSTRONGFOR WAITAKI The first was contested between our own Geraldine wahine toa and the Waitaki wahine from Oamaru. With a high-tempo start, both teams fought for dominance in the early exchanges until Sophie Kerr wove her way through the tiring defence to put the first points on the boardfor Geraldine.Kerr would again touch down after a clearing kick didnt find touch to put the home team up 14-0 after 25 minutes. The defence tightened,and fierce battles ensued, with both teams attacking through themiddle until Sia TuanaI intercepted awayward pass from Waitaki. A fantastic game to watch; both sides played positive and attackingrugby that was hotly contested to the last minute. The Geraldine wahine came away with aconvincing win, 47-22. Coach Jason Hurley said that he was immensely proudof his team,who showed they are only getting better and better. MIGHTY BSWIN CHAMBERLAIN CUP The Geraldine Senior Bteamwas up next. Expectations were high as the Stumpy Phimister coached team was determined SOUTH CANTERBURY DENTURE Satisfac CARE guar tion anteed to bring the Chamberlain Cup home after atwo-year absence. The action was fastpaced from the get-go, withthe Geraldine side executing aperfect 50-22 kick from James Stacker McLeod. The Red and Blacksrumbledforward from theensuing lineout to crash overearly. The home side dominated the game, with excellent direction from first-five Isaac Bolt, who controlled the game well for Geraldine. An individual piece of brilliance, again from Stacker, left Waimate defenders grasping at air as he pierced their defences to dot downunder the posts. Local legend Hag McRae also bagged atry, as the ageless war horse marshalled his troops throughout the game, time and time again. The team came away with aconvincing win, 38-10, and should take much confidence from their performance. AXEMEN FALL JUST SHORT The last game of the day saw the high-flying Waimate senior team meetthe new-look Axemen in a rematch of last year, where Waimate won 95-0. In warm conditions, the teams took to the field for Waimate to go straight on the attack in the Axemens 22.Waveafter wave of relentless attack came andcrashed into theRed and Black wall of defenders, 0-0 after 20 minutes. Try as they might, the Waimate team couldnt break the home sides line as the Axemen refused toyield and continued to moveforward. Finally, after 30 minutes, the visitors broke through from ascrum set-piece 5m out to score 5-0. Half-time came and went, and straight after the kick-off, Waimate scored again from a rolling maultogo up 12-0. The floodgates may have openedlast year,but the Axemen dug in, finding space 60 minutes in, and flew down the fieldinto the Waimatered zone. Attack after attack and some good ball retention finally paid dividends for the home side as Que Coops sold adummy and crashed over from 2m out, 12-5. The game continued to be abattle of defence until the last whistle. Waimate managed to add apenalty in the last five minutes to take the game 15-5. A fantastic defensive effort bythe Axemen showed there is character there and the potential to be the dark horse ofthe competition once they find cohesiveness in their attack. There was no rugby this Easter weekend; the Axemen will return this Saturday, 24 April, at School Park from 1300. See you there. The event has an Anzac theme in recognition ofthe sacrifice and contribution made byMid Canterbury and South Canterbury racing families over two world wars. Eachrace is dedicated to the family of someone who served. This late autumn racing opportunity will be one of the first fully open for the public to attend since Covid restrictions changed theface of public eventsin2021. It is also the last grass track trotting meeting in New Zealand for the current season, which finishes in July. The event is intended as afamilyfriendly day out with free entry and the opportunity to experience grass track racing at itsbest. Her rural and clinical background, and the appeal ofboth Geraldine and McKenzie HealthCare, were amatch. I really like it here. Im from asmall town in the King Country.This job was different, achallenge. Its alovely facility. With the Covid-19 pandemic rolling on andaregistered nurse shortagebiting, she faces some challenges but regards them with equanimity. Were building up in all areas, although aged care has its difficulties in Covid. Those difficulties gobeyond Covid strictures (although Karen says, So far, our residents have been Covid-free). Conversely, she has to consider how to keep McKenzie HealthCareand its residents connected withthe wider community and the peopleand activities they love. Community engagement isreally important; for example, we have the MobileSurgicalUnithere today. Normally, we would have contact with schools and playgroups in the area, et cetera. The residents love that kind of contact, and its good forthe community. She sees McKenzies Covid protocols as an abundanceofcare. Its abalancing act.Weve gottokeep theresidents safe, but theres apsychosocial aspect. Friends andfamily, and getting outisimportant. Karen takes asimilarly nuanced approach to the national shortage of registered nurses. Weve got to meet whatever the market isstating at the momentplus try to beat the competitors. We sell Geraldine as awhole package deal: agreat placetoliveand agreat place to work -and we offer competitive wages. Theres alot you can give; alot of job satisfaction. She says, McKenzie is great. Its a great team here. Wewant everyone to know were caring for everyone here.
