Koryu Aoshima wins peoples choice award
The annual Flare Ōtautahi Street Art
Festival took place in Christchurch in
March. Thisyear, eight artists from around
New Zealandtook part, including sometime
Geraldine resident KoryuAoshima,who
last week was announced theKathmandu
Peoples Choice award winner.
The festivals Facebook page says,
Located at 158 High St, Koryus mural
was the largest of the collection. Entitled
The Beginning and The End, the mural
is apainting of Niō warriors, guardian
statues of Buddhist temples in Japan.
The circular motif in the middle of the
image suggests the infinite quality of
existence. The warriors themselves
represent the beginning and end of all
things (the open and closed mouths
symbolic ofthe in and out breath, the
first andlastcharacters of the alphabet).
Although the work measures 160sqm,
Koryu was able tocomplete this mural
in just 10 days.
Koryu saysthat he wantedtosymbolise
the shared experiences of the Christchurch
earthquakes andthe Tohukuearthquake
andtsunamiinJapan in 2011, when both
regions were struck by devastating natural
disasters, making this work agift of
guardians.
Koryureturned to Japanatthe beginning
of April to attend afriendsweddingand
to catch up with family as Covid restrictions
ease. Before leaving, he said thathewould
be back at the end of May to complete
further commissions. FI MCCAFFERTY
