I N T E R I O R S C A P E SKirchler HomeBy Ann CipperlyInspired by the style of a French country chateau, the stunninghome of Terry and Ken Kirchler was built with a steeppitched roof, exposed beams, and brick arches, featuring finecabinetry with unique finishes throughout. Expanded spacefor entertaining extends to the outdoors with a gourmet kitchen andsoaring tall fireplace. Ken constructed fine features and details in thehome, and he built some of the furniture.As a builder of over 40 years, Ken has constructedmany design types of various sizehomes. “As the son of a brick mason,” he says,“I got my start in the construction businessearly on. I laid brick with my dad in the summersfrom the time I was 12 years old. Myfather also made me work with framers in themid 70’s so I could get a grasp of how homeswere put together.”Photos Lauren Beesley PhotographyFeeling he was destined to be in the constructionindustry, Ken moved to Auburn tostudy building science at Auburn University.The curriculum was about 95% commercialconstruction based, with limited studiesdirected towards residential construction. “Afew of the students that were headed in thesame direction as me,” Ken says, “helped toform what was called at the time ‘The BuildersGuild.’ We were the guys going into the residentialconstruction field.”EAST ALABAMA LIVING15
