The 55th pilgrimage will be heldon April 1, 2, and 3, featuring antebellum homes openfor day and candlelight tours along with afternoon teas,brunch, an antique show, and other events.24 EAST ALABAMA LIVING
After tours were canceled the past twoyears because of Covid, this year’s event isfilled with activities. The Pilgrimage Art Walkis scheduled for April 2 from 10 a.m. until 4p.m., while a tablescapes display and anantique show will be held Friday and Saturday,April 1 and 2.Afternoon tea will be served Friday andSaturday afternoons at 3 p.m. at the neo-classicalrevival Shorter Mansion. A TablescapeCocktail Party highlights Friday night atMargaret Hall, St. James Episcopal Church. Anelegant Sunday brunch is not to be missed atthe Shorter mansion from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.In a setting where a slower and gentlertime seemingly has stood still, the homesare furnished in family heirlooms as a nostalgicreminder of the wealth and culture ofthe period. Eight homes are open for daytimetours all three days from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.,while five homes are on the candlelight tourfrom 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.Named after an Indian Village, the sitealong the Chattahoochee River that is nowEufaula was occupied by three Creek Indiantribes of the Muscogee Nation. One of thesewas “the Eufaulas,” which is believed to mean“high bluff” in their language.When early explorers from Georgia looked forfertile cropland, they settled on the high bluffsin 1823, naming the area after the Creek Village.Following the Treaty of Cusseta, 1832, theCreeks ceded their land rights in the area.Barbour County was incorporated. MajorGeneral William Irwin, who served with anAlabama militia unit during the Creek War of1836-37, was granted several thousand acresof land nearby Henry County.After becoming a senator, General Irwinestablished the first steamboat wharf alongEufaula’s high bluffs. In his honor, Eufaulabecame “Irwinton.” In 1843, the town wasrenamed “Eufaula” because mail was constantlymisdirected to Irwinton, Georgia.Eufaula was spared during the Civil War.At the end of the war, 4,000 Union troopswere headed for Eufaula. The townsfolk hadreceived news from river traffic that the warhad ended. Prominent citizens met Gen.Benjamin Grierson under a flag of truce andconvinced him the war was over. To extendsouthern hospitality, the mayor invited thegeneral and his staff to dinner.The Eufaula Heritage Association wasformed in 1965 to prevent the loss and destructionof the town’s historic treasures. The associationpurchased Shorter Mansion at auctionand made it the headquarters for the associationand the annual Eufaula Pilgrimage. Photosand artifacts from Eufaula’s past can be seen inthe museum at Shorter Mansion.Shorter Mansion and Fendall Hall are openyear-round for tours. Built between 1856 and1860, Fendall Hall is operated as a historichouse museum by the Alabama HistoricalCommission. The antebellum Italianate homeis decorated with family and period furnishings.Initially built in 1884, Shorter Mansion was oncethe home of Governor John Gill Shorter. Bothhouses are open to the public Monday throughSaturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.Eufaula has over 700 structures listed onthe National Register of Historic Places. Whilevisiting during the pilgrimage, there are manyactivities and a tour of homes for an enjoyableday trip reflecting back in time.EAST ALABAMA LIVING25
