General Andrew Jackson proclaimedPensacola as the capital of the FloridaTerritory and was later sworn in as Florida’sfirst governor at the site.Today, Palafox Street in Historic DowntownPensacola is named one of the “10 GreatStreets in America” by the American PlanningAssociation. At the Historic Pensacola Village,guides in colonial-era costumes relive historywith reenactments and demonstrations. Thehistoric Belmont-DeVilliers district, the heartof the African-American community, wasonce known as the “Harlem of the South.”Ranked among the best beaches in thecountry, Pensacola Beach provides leisurely,fun days and offers a variety of activities andrestaurants. Sailing, jet-skiing, parasailing,and scuba diving are exhilarating activities. Inaddition, those who enjoy fishing can chartera boat for deep-sea fishing.Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, Spanishfor “lost island,” are known for having the longeststretch of federally protected seashore inthe United States. Enjoy a relaxing day with ahike or take a kayak to savor the scenery andwildlife.RestaurantsWhether you prefer fresh seafood in acasual setting or fine cuisine by award-winningchefs, Pensacola Bay offers a wide selection.Local favorites include fresh fish andseafood dishes, sushi, surf-and-turf, shrimpand grits, among others.
