8 Growing shrooms ‘complicated but fun’ AN INITIATIVE to grow mushrooms at the fungi farm in the Avon River Corridor regeneration area has been labelled “complicated but fun”. The project is being led by the Riverlution Collective and Richmond Community Garden. Spokeswoman Hayley Guglietta said it will take a couple of years to fully establish the fungi populations in the area. “They’ve got to have the right amount of sunshine, water and heat – they need moist, warm soil,” she said. “It’s complicated but fun.” Autumn is the best time to grow fungus and since the farm opened last July it has seen button and oyster mushrooms pop up and shaggy clumps of lion’s mane sprout from trees. “We’ve still got a lot of inoculating to do and there’s different methods of getting the spores in, such as in-ground mulching, mushroom compost and logs,” said Guglietta. There are workshops on site each month where people can learn the process of mushroom inoculation. The fungi farm on the corner of Evelyn Cousins Ave and River Rd, Richmond, also features mushroom-themed sculptures and art. Bug hotel a bid to boost bee numbers A BUG hotel shaped like a whare has been installed at Horseshoe Lake, Burwood, to help boost the population of native bees. City council urban rangers made and installed the hotel in the lake’s regeneration area of the Ōtakaro Avon River Corridor in a bid to establish more colonies of native bees. In turn, the bees pollinate native plants, including manuka, kanuka and pohutukawa. “We’re helping the native bee population by building a home so they can do their job more easily. They have to compete with the honey bees so want to give them a bit of a head start,” city council community partnerships ranger Courtney Reid said. The hotels are filled with flax, pinecones, bamboo and other natural products which the bees can use to establish their habitat. Said Reid: “We’re supporting from the bottom up. So if we establish more habitats for insects and bees, that helps increase the number of native plants and trees in the area, which then attracts more native bird life.” The area around Horseshoe Lake was a food resource site for Māori, so the rangers thought it was fitting to have the hotel shaped like a whare. “Staff handmade these wonderful structures in their spare time and also made use of resources that were already here HABITAT: City council urban rangers install a bug hotel at Horseshoe Lake.
