2022 STATE OF
RESIDENTIAL
CONSTRUCTION
INDUSTRY (SORCI)
REPORT REVEALS
SOLUTIONS FOR U.S.
RESIDENTIAL BUILDERS
DURING AN INFLATION
PERIOD
Report indicates key trends in US residential home building
marked by inflation, supply chain disruption and surge in
demand
HOUSTON, TEXAS— (March 28, 2022) The Association
of Professional Builders (APB), a leading business coaching
service for custom home builders, with members in the United
States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, today announced
the findings from its annual State of Residential Construction
Industry (SORCI) Report for 2022. The report, compiled
annually, surveys hundreds of residential home builders
operating in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New
Zealand. The sponsors for this report include Buildertrend,
CBUSA, Buildxact, Xact Accounting and Builda Price.
Key findings in the 2022 SORCI report for the United States
indicated:
• A sharp rise in the cost of materials, in particular, with
lumber prices increasing as much as 142 percent as a result
of increased demand and supply chain distributions.
• A surge in home building demand fueled by record low
interest rates and increased disposable income among
consumers who were unable to spend their money on
overseas vacations and entertainment.
• At the start of 2022, inflation had hit 7 percent in the
United States. This trend is likely to continue upwards until
interest rates are increased, at which point it is likely that
demand for new homes may start to drop.
Despite the supply chain disruptions, increased demand and
inflation, builders in the United States protected their margins
by using allowances for lumber from mid-2020 onwards. The
SORCI Report indicated that 49.1 percent of builders know
their fixed expenses per job, per day, an increase from 43.1
percent the year prior.
The SORCI 2022 report also revealed that the industry is
continuing to become more systemized and more professional
year over year. Professional builders continue to implement
new ideas and structures that enable them to become better
10 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
operators and deliver a better experience for their clients, with
37 percent of building companies investing more in training
during 2021 than what they invested in 2020.
Builders are looking ahead to 2022 with confidence with
almost half (46.8 percent) of all builders surveyed intending to
surpass $120,000 in annual salary. It’s important to note that
these figures all relate to owners’ drawings and do not include
any retained profits left in the company.
“While the residential home builders we talked to faced many
challenges this past year, their resilience is to be applauded,”
said Erik Cofield, U.S. Executive Business Coach, Association
of Professional Builders. “Residential Home Builders have been
willing to invest in their education to systemize their business
processes. This has enabled them to forecast jobs and schedule
revenue more accurately, which has resulted in increased profit
margins.”
More than 700 builders globally participated in the survey
to provide deeper insights into the residential construction

With professional builders running more concurrent projects
than ever before in 2021, the report also indicated that
builders were utilizing dedicated project management software
to manage the process efficiently. In 2021, 30.3 percent of
U.S.-based home builders used Buildertrend as a project
management software.
Other findings include:
• 74.6 percent of the U.S.-based home builders do not have
a business plan covering the next 3 years.
• 51.6 percent of builders in the United States delivered their
projects on time in 2021.
• 46.7 percent of the U.S.-based home builders recognize
generating quality leads as their biggest marketing
challenge.
• 40.2 percent of builders in the United States paid
themselves $60K - $120K in total drawings in 2021.
The comprehensive report also dives into trends in sales,
contracts, social media, marketing and advertising within the
industry. Data from the report also covered insights from
residential builders for lead generation, team building, project
management, planning, owner’s remuneration, financials and
self-development.
APB’S WORK IN THE INDUSTRY
APB has worked with thousands of builders, coaching
residential building companies to systemize their business,
including Rick Champlin of Simple Group based in Utah.
industry. Data from the report also revealed that 55.7 percent
of U.S.-based survey participants signed more contracts in
2021 than 2020. From all countries, 71 percent of builders
take on less than 13 projects a year. Additionally, 63.9 percent
of U.S. builders take on less than 13 projects and 36.1 percent
take on more than 13 projects per year, which is significantly
more than other countries. An important consideration
however, is that more builders in the United States tended
to focus on smaller projects with an average contract value
falling between $100,000 - $299,999 compared to Australian
builders.
“We always look forward to the opportunity to survey the
residential homebuilding community,” said Russ Stephens. “Our
annual SORCI report not only provides key data points that
help show us where the industry is headed, but also allow us
to adapt our offerings to the needs of the residential home
builders we have the opportunity to work with daily. We also
look forward to helping interested residential home builders
we haven’t yet worked with learn how to better systemize their
businesses, grow their margins, sales revenue and ultimately,
transform this industry.”
“One of the main reasons we joined APB was to improve our
margins, have accountability, and not reinvent the wheel,”
Champlin said. “One of the first things we did was look at our
accounting. We were able to figure out why our reports weren’t
accurate and then fix our accounting systems so that we could
quickly pull reports, which had been a big problem. We used
APB’s “Pricing For Profit’ model along with our KPI spreadsheet
to understand what our overhead numbers were and made
sure those got added to our pricing to help increase the net
profit on our jobs.”
You can read more about Rick’s business growth success story
as well as others at https://associationofprofessionalbuilders.
com/success-stories/. To find out more about the state of the
residential construction industry, a free PDF of the report can
GBHA BUILDING THE FUTURE OF THE RESIDENTIAL
HOMEBUILDING INDUSTRY
by Aimee Bertrand
The Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) welcomes
you to the Houston Build Expo! Our region has one of the
fastest growing housing markets in the country and the GHBA
is the largest home builders’ association in Texas.
Our more than 1,500 member companies not only consist of
residential home builders, but also residential land developers,
remodelers, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors, all
affiliated with the home building industry. Together, the GHBA
has the largest Remodelers Council and the largest Sales
& Marketing Council in the National Association of Home
Builders. Our new-in-2022 Professional Women in Building
Council, is already making news as the largest in the country,
with nearly 200 members. Our membership also includes
the Custom Builders Council, Bay Area Builders Division and
Northern Counties Builders & Developers Division.
building regulators and inspectors at the local level, and provide
insight and expertise on local development commissions
and taskforces. And at the state level, legislators propose
thousands of new bills every session, many that affect home
building, and we take an active role in advocating on behalf of
our industry.
The past 12 months have been opportunities for reengagement
and reinvigoration for our industry. As our members have dealt
with labor shortages, we have worked to build collaborations
with education, training and employer partners, to ensure that
we don’t lose students in homebuilding education programs
to other industries. GHBA has also created a free job board
for members to post their open positions at www.ghba.org/
careers-in-construction.
These groups meet regularly, hold educational luncheons,
provide material to GHBA members through online and inperson
learning, host networking events and dedicate time and
resources to GHBA charities, including Operation Finally Home
and HomeAid Houston.
The GHBA also participates in a very robust government affairs
advocacy program. Member builders work closely with local
officials during each code cycle review, meet regularly with
18 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
In partnership with our members, the GHBA continues its
mission to interact with government, the community, and the
general public to enhance the business climate for its members,
and to provide quality, attainable housing to the community it
serves.
Please visit www.ghba.org for more information on
opportunities for education and networking at the GHBA. We
look forward to building a GREATER Houston, with you.

Selling Thru a Tough Economy
Wednesday, June 8 | 1:15 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. | Keynote Area
shifting economic conditions. We’ll cover:
Sponsored by 1. Increasing your portion of the market pie
4. Structuring your sales effort
5. How to balance sales and marketing efforts
maximize the effectiveness of the association. We will layout how to determine what associations to join, how to work them and get business
from your involvement. The single greatest way to find grouped customers and network contacts is right in your backyard association!
Work them to the fullest and you’ll never make a cold call again!
Texas is the only state to run an isolated electric grid, operated
by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). This system
allows it to skirt federal regulations, but also makes it more
difficult to import power from outside the system — and thus
more vulnerable to the type of catastrophic failures that occurred
in February. Lack of local weatherization regulation also left
refineries and natural gas plants unprepared for cold temperatures,
leading to disruptions along the energy supply chain.
Six Retail Energy Providers in the Upper Gulf Coast (Houston) area
GROWTH ISSUES PUSH LEED
BUILDING, NEW GENERATORS &
SOLAR SYSTEMS
By John Whitcraft, PE, CLD, LEED AP BD+C,
President of Whitcraft Engineering Solutions, Inc.
Houston’s pivot to energy-efficient building has my attention.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a globally
recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. One
Texas builder—Coventry Homes—clearly demonstrates green industry
leadership with its LEED certified homes in Austin, Dallas and Fort
Worth. They have instituted Environments for Living design in
Houston. This building business trend will become more prominent
as more people from environmentally-conscious California move to
Texas.
Statistics show that almost 700,000 Californians have relocated to
Texas since 2010. The top destination for all Californians moving to
Texas is Harris County. The Houston area was particularly popular
among Los Angeles movers, who accounted for almost 40% of the
Californians who moved to the city in 2019, joining nonnative Texans
from throughout the United States.
“In the past two years, installed solar capacity in Houston has more
than quadrupled, as new homeowners are going solar,” according to
Katie Watkins in a June 2021 blog on Houston Public Media.
Loss of Power Revealed Vulnerable Electric Power Grid
Extreme weather nearly devastated Houston—as well as much of the
entire Lone Star state—during the infamous ice storm of February
2021. American Oversight, a watchdog website, explains the dire
situation in its May 12, 2021 post:
The arctic blast hit Texas especially hard, triggering system-wide
failures across the state’s energy infrastructure that left roughly
4.4 million without power on the night of Feb. 15, with more
than 500,000 Texans still lacking power days later. More than
100 people died, and disruptions to water services continued for
days. Some of those spared power losses later found themselves
facing exorbitant energy bills.
34 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
To eliminate future power outage disasters, Houston Mayor Sylvester
Turner, a former state legislator, has spearheaded “Resilient Houston,”
a multi-billion-dollar initiative to fight the effects of natural disasters
and climate change. Mayor Turner said he is also collaborating on
projects to protect essential services such as the power grid and water
treatment facilities. In addition, he is considering construction of a
power microgrid to provide backup electricity in case of a major outage
in Houston. City officials are researching potential updates to building
codes to ensure greater protection for homes and apartments.
Citing an example of recent environmental sustainability, Mayor Turner
stated that renewable energy sources fully power all city facilities in
Houston. However, he acknowledged some resistance from Houston’s
fossil fuel corporations for a move to greener, cleaner energy sources.
In a March 11, 2021, interview with the Texas Tribune, Mayor Turner
responded:
There’s probably some nervousness on the part of companies,
but…moving forward with diversification of power sources and
energy transition is necessary for the wellbeing of all residents
and companies. You can’t talk about international, global trade
and business investments without also being able to say to people
around the country and around the globe that the city of Houston
is genuinely focused on taking the necessary steps to build
resilience and also to address climate change.
Generating Emergency Power with a Generator
Solar panels will not keep electricity working during a power outage.
For safety reasons, solar panels actually do not send electricity to
a house when the grid is shut down due to a storm or other power
outage. In a February 8, 2022, posting, Catherine Lane, blog writer for
Solar Reviews, explains:
Grid-tied solar panels send electricity to utility lines, and if they aren’t
shut off during a power outage, they would continue to send electricity,
posing a threat to utility workers fixing the lines. That means, in order
to prevent any harm, your solar panels go out when the grid does. Solar
panel inverters shut down during power outages, so homeowners need
a backup power [generator or battery system] if they want to run their
home without the utility.
Lane reported that gas generators are the most popular form of backup
power and can be installed at a home with solar panels as long as
the panels and generator are wired properly so that the two do not
interfere with one another. A solar installer or a certified electrician is
best equipped to create a back-up power system. Check with your city
and local requirements to identify if a permit is required.
Even with a stand-by generator, a house’s solar panels will stay off
during a power outage.
To keep the panels on requires installation of a solar inverter-

compatible battery. “You can install... a battery [inverter] with your
solar panels if you want to maximize the amount of backup power
available to you,” states Lane in her Solar Reviews post. The battery
system must have an electrical contactor, which is programmed to
disconnect from the grid while the battery charges from the solar
panels. The contactor is programmed to reconnect with the grid when
the battery is completely depleted late at night.
Choosing a home generator depends mainly on the size of one’s
dwelling and what is needed to be powered, according to Popular
Mechanics. The average house requires at least 5,000 to 7,500
watts to run only the most critical equipment, such as a refrigerator,
furnace, and hot-water heater. However, there are also systems that
are equipped to power an entire house. Full power requires at least a
20,000-watt generator.
Stand-by generators are permanently installed with a transfer switch.
Portable generators, sometimes called back-up generators, are used to
provide temporary power. “Portable is a relative term; some are more
portable than others,” explains Popular Mechanics. “While the smallest
models can be picked up and carried, most have wheels and a handle
to make transport easier.”
Some inexpensive generators in the chart below are recommended by
The Spruce in a February 2021 post titled, “The 7 Best Generators to
Solar Becomes More Popular
Wally Calaway, a retired scientist, selected solar to power his house. In
fact, he installed 25 solar panels on his roof. “I’m concerned about the
environment,” he told Houston Public Media reporter Katie Watkins. “I
can hardly force the Texas grid to go any faster than it’s going to solar,
renewable energy, but I can change my household.” Then, Calaway
admitted another motive — an economic one: “I haven’t paid a bill. I’ve
just been collecting a credit since they were turned on.”
Installed solar capacity in Houston increased from 9.5 megawatts at
the end of 2017 to 42.5 megawatts at the end of 2019 — enough to
power about 8,400 homes, according to Environment Texas, which has
been analyzing solar advancement in Texas cities for almost 10 years.
series of recommendations for Houston to become carbon neutral by
2050. The city aims to generate 5 million megawatt-hours from local
solar projects per year by 2050.
As Houston goes green, the city’s
businesses and residents will need
the services of a LEED-accredited,
and licensed professional electrical
engineer.
“For the first several years, growth of solar and Houston was pretty
slow, but in the last several years, it’s really skyrocketed,” said Luke
Metzger, Executive Director of Environment Texas. Even during 2020,
in the midst of the pandemic, Houston’s permitting office says it saw
the number of solar permits more than double compared to the year
before.
Increasing solar power from local rooftops and community projects
is one of the goals of the city’s Climate Action Plan, which outlines a
THE BENEFITS OF UTILIZING CGI ENVIRONMENTS FOR MARKETING IN
THE BUILDING INDUSTRY
Image Flexibility, Unlimited Possibility
Hiring a reputable CGI-rendering or animation studio can
help any marketing team both large and small achieve their
marketing goals in a much more cost-effective manner.
Computer-generated imagery services — whether still
renderings or animations — have staggering advantages over
traditional photography or videography for the construction
industry and the companies that support them. Finding a
suitable environment, tracking down the right furniture and
fixtures, staging the location, hiring an appropriate team,
and waiting for the optimal time of day or weather can be an
extremely frustrating and costly experience. Renderings not
only save money but provide an array of other benefits to the
end client as well. Everything in your chosen scenes can be
produced to your specifications. You select the lighting and
detail that fit your needs and goals. And, if you decide to make
a change, you won’t have to set up another costly photo shoot.
Images are consistent across a group and calibrated to your
vision, creating a turn-key process that provides your marketing
teams more time to devote to other projects and endeavors.
Complimentary Visual Interaction
A product represents a conscious selection of design elements. Form,
texture, and balance are carefully used, creating a beautiful end result
from many considerations and decisions. The same thoughtfulness
should extend to the 3D product environment. Digital Imaging
Group in Houston (https://www.dig-houston.com) takes this process
seriously, working with the utmost care to match the visual elements
of a 3D environment to the product it will ultimately showcase. Using
the unlimited possibility of CGI environments, the DIG team creates
spaces that vary: from the rough brick walls in an urban loft to the soft
pastel interior of a country home. Furniture, material, and the quality
of light all come together to create an ideal environment.
3D Environments and Focal Point, Details Matter
Companies like Hunter fans create products that take form just as
seriously as function. They deliver on both fronts to their customers.
Ceiling fans are environmental objects that consumers see every
day. They reflect the style and visual cues that each individual owner
wants in their home. For that reason, Hunter goes to great lengths
to create products that suit a wide range of aesthetic preferences.
In a multitude of shapes, colors, materials, and applications, Hunter
Fan Company is constantly providing new options and choices for its
consumers. When that much care and attention is put into a product,
the same level of thoughtful design and material choice must go into
the environment in which it is displayed. Digital Imaging Group is
proud to provide 3D-rendered environments for Hunter Fan Company
that match their exacting visual standards. The image to the left is
an example of how a 3D rendered environment and product can be
carefully composited with real-world photography. Every element of a
scene is created with the goal of ensuring visual harmony, unifying the
space with the product being displayed.
3D Environments Create Lush Outdoor Product
Settings
3D environments offer the gold standard for displaying product
imagery. These picture-perfect outdoor environments can be created
with exact lighting. The amount of control a client can exercise over
the environment is vastly greater — and less expensive — than that
available in a physical setting. DIG works closely with clients to create
an array of colors and compositions that enhance and display the
product in a stunning CGI image. You put all your resources, time, and
effort into creating the best possible product. Make sure your product
imagery matches the same high level of work, care, and attention to
detail.
CGI Environments from Wide Shots to Closeups
OZCO Building Products had a specific set of requirements for their
CGI product photography, and that meant wide beauty shots along
with up-close shots of specific hardware components. DIG worked
closely with the OZCO team to provide these shots and maintained
the consistent lighting and look that is critical across product imagery.
DIG’s CGI staff leverages years of experience in 3D product rendering
to deliver the results clients need and expect, creating CGI product
images with real visual impact. With stunning 3D environments
showcasing your products, they are sure to get noticed.
The Sky is The Limit
This is just a very small sampling of the benefits and uses in which
CGI can benefit any marketing or product development team. Many
companies are employing CGI to create dynamic product animations,
technical animations, and also installation animations to aid in the
training of staff to reduce product installation errors which ultimately
increase end-client customer satisfaction and save the company both
time and money. You are only limited to your imagination when it
comes to using CGI on your next marketing project.
