Ponta do Garajau apresenta
A grande diversidade geológica,
de valor científico elevado,
da qual se destaca o cone surtseiano
do Garajau. Trata-se de um cone de
tufos (tuff cone) formado por depósitos
de cinzas e blocos (de cor amarelada)
associados à atividade hidrovulcânica,
que alternam com depósitos de lapilli
e bombas (de cor negra avermelhada)
associados a fases de atividade
subaérea estromboliana. O cone foi
edificado sobre uma arriba litoral
previamente talhada numa sucessão de
derrames basálticos da Formação do
Funchal (Complexo Vulcânico Superior
— CVS 2). No local observam-se, ainda,
dois filões que terão alimentado as
fases mais tardias da erupção.

onta do Garajau exhibits great
P geological diversity of high
scientific value, of which the
Garajau surtseian cone stands out. It is a
tuff cone formed by deposits of ash and
blocks (yellowish colour) associated with
hydrovolcanic activity, which alternate
with deposits of lapilli and bombs (reddish
black colour) associated with phases of
subaerial strombolian activity. The cone
was built on a coastal cliff previously
carved by a succession of basaltic spills of
the Funchal Formation (Superior Volcanic
Complex - CVS 2). At the site we can also
observe two dikes that would have fed the
later stages of the eruption.
Santa Cruz celebrates 507
years as a municipality on the
25 th of June.
