Wildflower bike rides scheduled
The Madison Soil & Water Conservation District is
leading a free, three-part bicycle ride to view wildflowers
along the Ohio to Erie Trail. At pit stops along the
trail, riders will learn about local flora and fauna, history,
and conservation practices.
Each ride starts at 8 a.m. at the Prairie Grass Trailhead,
262 W. High St., London, and extends southwest
to the Madison-Clark county border. After the official
ride ends, riders are welcome to head onto South
Charleston or return back to London.
June 18—Bicyclists may enjoy the beauty of June’s
peak bloom flowers such as Ohio spiderwort, bladder
campion, prairie rose, and more.
July 16—Purple coneflower, milkweed and royal
catchfly will be in bloom. This is the annual Prairie Appreciation
Bike Ride, started in 2005 by the Jack Mc-
Dowell, a botanist and prairie enthusiast. McDowell
was one of the early “discoverers” of the remnant
prairies of Madison and Clark counties and started the
efforts to manage these prairie treasures in the midst
of threats from invasive woody plant and agricultural
weed species. McDowell passed away in 2012, but his
dream to inspire others to preserve the Ohio prairie is
not forgotten.
Aug. 20—As summer transitions into autumn, the
various sunflowers, ironweed, goldenrod and asters
come into bloom.
Bring your helmet, water and an inquisitive mind.
