How 

motorcyclists 

can stay safe 

while riding 

Many people are drawn to motorcycles because 

of the intensity and excitement riding provides. 

Motorcycles are fun and rounely draw aenon 

from other motorists. 

What motorcycles add in terms of speed and 

excitement, they may lose in safety, especially 

when compared to cars and trucks. The Naonal 

Transportaon Safety Board says motorcycle riders 

and their passengers have the highest risk of fatal 

injury among all motor vehicle users. Per mile traveled, 

motorcyclist fatalies occur nearly 28 mes 

as oen as passenger vehicle occupant fatalies in 

traffic crashes. 

Thankfully, the risks associated with riding motorcycles 

can be reduced with some simple safety 

precauons. 

Gear 

Motorcycle riders can improve the barrier 

between themselves and the road with the proper 

gear. Quality leather jackets and pants, helmets, 

gloves, and nonskid boots can protect the body 

from severe injuries. 

Improve visibility 

Reflecve tape added to clothing can help 

motorcyclists become more visible to other drivers; 

otherwise, wear bright clothing colors. Also, riding 

with others as a group increases visibility. 

Familiarize yourself with the bike 

Motorcycle riders are not advised to take an 

unfamiliar bike into busy traffic. If the bike has never 

been ridden before, become familiar with its handling 

and responsiveness in a controlled area that 

isn’t full of traffic before taking it on the open road. 

Stay out of blind spots 

Consumer Reports says roughly two-thirds of all 

motorcycle accidents are caused by a car driver violang 

a motorcycle rider’s right of way. Motorcycle 

riders should never assume a driver sees them. 

Staying out of blind spots and steering clear of 

turning vehicles can help. 

Adjust for weather 

Riding in the rain or in other difficult condi- 

ons is more risky since the roads are slippery. 

Slow down or keep the bike at home in inclement 

weather. 

Remove distracons 

Stow cell phones away so your aenon is not 

drawn away from the road. 

Remain sober and alert 

Don’t ride while under the influence of alcohol 

or drugs (including over-the-counter if they cause 

drowsiness). Also, do not drive while drowsy, as it is 

just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. 

Be aware of obstacles 

Motorcyclists need to be very careful about road 

obstacles, more so than other drivers. This includes 

uneven road surfaces, fallen branches, oil slicks, 

and/or wet spots. ConsumerSafety.org says a motorcycle 

has less contact with the road than a car, 

making it more likely to skid out of control or throw 

a rider from the bike. 

Motorcycle riders need to be more cauous on the 

road because they are at increased risk for injury.

The COVID-19 virus has had a ripple effect that has 

impacted every facet of life since the World Health 

Organizaon first declared a global pandemic nearly two 

years ago. Individuals are well aware of the effects the 

pandemic has had on their daily lives, but one lesser 

known yet significant impact of the virus could have a 

lasng effect. 

Blood donaons have dropped considerably since the 

onset of the pandemic. Even a return to relave normalcy 

has not solved the emergency blood and platelets 

shortage. At the end of September 2021, the American 

Red Cross acknowledged it was facing a significant blood 

and platelet shortage. According to the Red Cross, the 

spread of the Delta variant had, by the end of summer 

2021, spurred fears and sparked the lowest levels of donor 

turnout all year. Esmates from the Red Cross by the end 

of September 2021 suggested the group needed to collect 

10,000 addional blood products per week in order to 

meet the growing demand for blood and platelets. 

Blood donaon is a selfless act that saves lives every 

day, and organizaons like the Red Cross note that it’s 

safe to donate even as the world connues to bale the 

COVID-19 virus. For instance, the Red Cross requires that 

everyone at blood drives and blood donaon centers 

wear a face mask regardless of their vaccinaon status. In 

addion, Red Cross protocols allow for face shields, but 

not as a substute for face masks. 

Individuals who want to donate can make the process go 

smoothly by following these day of donaon ps, courtesy 

of the Red Cross. 

• Start your RapidPass¨. Aer booking an appointment, 

donors can start their RapidPass¨ before they arrive at a 

blood drive or donaon center. The RapidPass¨ is a form 

that asks donors for some basic informaon, including 

their health histories, and takes about 10 to 15 minutes 

to fill out. Once the form is completed, donors can print 

it our or email it to themselves and bring it with them to 

their donaon appointments. Filling the form out ahead of 

an appointment can make appointments go more quickly. 

• Bring addional personal informaon. Donors will need 

a photo ID, such as a donor card or driver’s license, so 

donaon center workers can confirm their idenes. A list 

of addional forms of acceptable photo idenficaon can 

be found at redcrossblood.org. Donors also should bring 

a list of prescripon and over-the-counter medicaons 

they’re taking. 

• Hydrate prior to your appointment. The Red Cross 

recommends donors drink an extra pint of water, or 

another nonalcoholic beverage, prior to their donaon 

appointment. 

• Wear appropriate are. A shirt with sleeves that 

easily roll up above the elbow is ideal when donang 

blood. 

• Let donaon center employees know about previous 

donor experiences. Donors can share valuable 

informaon about past donaon experiences that they 

think are relevant with donaon center employees. For 

example, if donors recall a parcular vein that was easily 

accessible at a previous donaon, share that informaon 

this me around. 

• Relax. Some relaxing music or lighthearted 

conversaon with fellow donors can help donors soothe 

any nerves they might have during the donaon process.
