Spreading the word . . . ACC out and about In the last quarter ACC has been invited to participate in several radio broadcasts, including: Trans World Radio interviews relating to: • The Archbishop of Canterbury talking about his own mental health issues. • The increase in anti-anxiety drug prescriptions. A BBC Radio Suffolk interview, talking about bereavement and specifically baby loss, following the death of the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s twin son. Heart’s Lament Members of the ACC team attended as exhibitors at the Churches Together Conference in Swanwick and the Christians in Government Conference (CIG) in Westminster, where we were able to share with delegates about the work of ACC. Kathy Spooner was also a panel member and she and Wien Fung (ACC board member) were speakers at the CIG Conference. ACC Chair Sue Monckton- Rickett was invited to run a workshop for the On-Line Events day conference ‘Emergency Summit Contributing to Global Peace & Justice’ from which all profits were donated to support relief work in Ukraine. Kathy Spooner was a speaker at a Christian Professionals Network Conference. What’s on where ACC events The following courses are being delivered by ACC affiliate organisations in the coming months, and full details can be found on the ACC website: https://www.acc-uk.org/ professional-development/ events.html • Manna House Counselling Service, Northampton: Level 2 Introduction to Christian Counselling, starting summer and autumn 2022. • Heart & Mind – London: Certificate in Counselling Skills & Theory: CPCAB Level 3. Saturdays, starting in October 2022. Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling – CPCAB Level 5. Fridays, starting in September 2022. A prayer that can be used by counsellors and those receiving counsel alike. This prayer can also be used as a hymn, set to the hymn tune ‘Troyte’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyqHgKSiE80) Lord, when the waves around me roll, Lord, when I fear for mind and soul, Lord, my deep emptiness, make whole; My all-in-all. Looking ahead Future forums ACC are planning to host some online forums for members to discuss elements of good practice. Benefact Trust, making a positive difference to people’s mental health by Lesley King-Lewis LAUNCHING BRIGHTER LIVES You hardly need me to tell you that the effects of the pandemic have had a huge impact on people’s mental health. What was already a big problem across our communities has become even more concerning, with support services stretched like never before. It’s this post-pandemic landscape, and our ongoing commitment to addressing some of our most difficult and problematic social issues, that has led us to creating our latest thematic grants programme: Brighter Lives. Brighter Lives is focused on helping Christian organisations to respond to the long-term impact of Covid-19 on people’s mental health, through greater training, resources and support. THE PROGRAMME AND THE PROJECTS The Brighter Lives programme covers three main project areas: • Supporting existing or emerging specialist services provided by churches and Christian charities for people struggling with mental health issues. Our focus is on the most vulnerable who may struggle to access support elsewhere. For example, counselling or similar therapeutic services, which could be delivered in-person, online or by phone. • Enabling Christian organisations to train, equip and resource other churches and Christian charities to provide: Enhanced mental health awareness and/or mental health first aid, and appropriate mental health and wellbeing support groups and services. • Programmes to support the personal mental health and wellbeing of clergy and other church leaders/workers who may be suffering, particularly post-pandemic. (Services provided should demonstrate reach/impact across a local area, regionally or nationally.) FUNDING TO FACILITATE CHANGE Our funding is for the people who are making the difference. Churches and Christian charities can apply for funding through our website (where there’s also plenty of guidance available to help groups make their application as detailed and effective as possible). We live in challenging and difficult times, and Benefact Trust is more committed than ever to making a positive and transformative impact on society. The real difference, though, is made by the people who provide the services and support – the churches, charities and volunteers. Brighter Lives will increase training and resources to help support the most vulnerable people in our communities.
