New features at 

‘22 Safety Expo

Last year, 950 people attended the Safety Expo, a free, familyfriendly 

event hosted annually by the Madison County Emergency 

Management Agency (EMA) and area first responders. 

“We hope to have just as many visitors this year or more, now 

that COVID has cleared a little bit. Myself and the first responders 

are wanting that connection piece with the children again,” said 

Holly Langham, EMA deputy director. 

The 2022 Safety Expo is set for Aug. 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the 

Madison County Fairgrounds in London. Activities will take place 

in the Eby Youth Arena and outside on the grounds. The event offers 

activities designed to share safety information in fun and engaging 

ways for all ages. 

As has become tradition, medical response helicopters will make 

landings at the expo. MedFlight is scheduled to arrive around 10:30 

a.m., and Care Flight is slated to land around 12:15 p.m. Both landings 

are subject to change should the flight crews be called out on 

an emergency. 

First Energy and AEP will hold live-wire safety demonstrations. 

The Central Townships Fire Department will hold a mock rescue 

demonstration during which they free a victim from a car using special 

extraction tools. 

Once again, the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails will 

put on a bike rodeo. Children are encouraged to bring their bikes 

for safety lessons. Free bike helmets will be given away while supplies 

last. London City Schools will have a 

school bus on site for children to practice

day of dog‐friendly activities. 

The event is free. 

The festival, now in its 

16th year, is expected to 

draw thousands of dogs 

and dog lovers and feature dozens of activities, 

demonstrations, and more than 80 local 

vendors. There will be trails for walks, a 

lake for dogs to swim in, and an ice castle to 

cool off in. Additionally, several local rescues 

and shelters with booths will help to 

educate aspiring dog parents on the adoption 

process. 

“WAG! Fest has always and always will 

be a day for the dogs in our lives, and it is so 

clear that the dogs are fully in tune with that

Teens and tweens recently spent an afternoon participating in Mount Sterling Public LIbrary’s first video 

gaming event featuring Xbox, Nintendo Switch and N64 gaming systems. Ray Reece, a former library page, 

served as the event host, creating gaming challenges, providing prizes and snacks, and supplying equipment 

and a second big screen, as well as controllers, and gaming systems. The Friends of the Library provided 

snacks, too, along with two $50 GameStop gift cards. The library provided drinks. In addition to prizes won 

from challenge drawings, each participant took home a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) 

kit provided by COSI and the Ohio Library Council. The library has plenty of these kits left to give out.

This year’s WAG! Fest features everything from educational 

advice to live demonstrations and includes the 

following activities: 

• The WAG! Marketplace includes booths of products, 

services, and samples from pet retailers, veterinarians, 

doggie day care centers, pet photographers, 

groomers, trainers, and clubs and organizations dedicated 

to the health and well‐being of canines. 

• Dogs can go for a swim at the Germain Subaru of 

Columbus Water Bark Beach off‐leash swim area or just 

enjoy the cool oasis of two-and-a-half tons of ice at the 

Atlas Butler Ice Castle. New this year, Gated Dock will 

provide dock diving instruction. 

• Guests can meet experts from various area rescue 

groups to learn about the best four‐legged match for 

their home and lifestyle at the Hollywood Feed 

Meet‐The‐Breed area. 

• Southern Ohio Flying K9s will present disc demonstrations 

and freestyle performances at 10:30 a.m., 

12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. 

• Sky Dogs will present dog agility demonstrations 

at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. 

Dogs taking part in WAG! Fest must be at least 16 

weeks old, current on vaccinations (must display current 

license and rabies tags), and capable of socializing 

with humans and dogs of all sizes. Dogs must be leashed 

except when at the Water Bark Beach swim area. 

Leashes must be no longer than six feet. Retractable 

leashes are discouraged. Prong, pinch, spiked and choke 

collars are not permitted.

Five decades with same school district a labor of love

A half century is a long time to work in 

the same field, let alone the same place, but 

for Jane Breckenridge, 50 years with the 

Jefferson Local School District has been a 

labor of love. 

The 1971 West Jefferson High School 

graduate did not stray far from her roots. 

As the top business student in her 

class–typing 90 words per minute and taking 

shorthand at 120 words 

per minute–she landed a job 

in Columbus at Nationwide 

Insurance which she enjoyed, 

but she hated the long commute. 

“After giving it six months, 

I decided to look elsewhere 

which led me to an ad for Jefferson 

Local Schools,” Breckenridge 

recalled. 

“I’ve truly loved working at 

Jefferson Local from the first 

day,” she said. 

She was hired in March 

1972, although her assignment 

as secretary to the principal at the 

newly built Norwood Elementary was due to 

start in August. In the interim, she worked 

as a “Gal Friday” for the superintendent, 

building principals and treasurer’s office, 

where she hand-typed payroll checks for all 

employees. 

“I immediately knew I had made the 

right choice,” continued Breckenridge. “It 

just fit. It has literally become like a second 

home to me.

students and staff and 

have remained friends with 

quite a few even after they 

left the district.” 

Including the superintendent 

who first hired her, 

Breckenridge has worked as a 

secretary for six superintendents–and 

happily reports a 

great rapport with all of 

them–two elementary principals, 

more than 35 school 

board members and hundreds 

of certified and classified staff. 

Breckenridge’s son was 

able to attend classes in the school district 

due to her employment, which she said was 

a lifesaver when it came to daycare and 

keeping up with both his and her school activities. 

She also enjoyed their daily commute 

together. 

“Of course, if there were any issues to be 

resolved, and thankfully very few, he knew 

I would be aware of it before he even 

stepped foot in the house,” said Breckenridge, 

“and I used that to my full advantage.” 

During her years in the school district, 

she volunteered with levy campaigns, 

Adopt-a-Family programs and Ox Roast 

fundraisers and worked the concession 

stand at Friday night football games as an 

athletic booster volunteer. 

In looking back over the years, the 

biggest change Breckenridge noted was the 

introduction of technology. 

“When I began, there was one copy machine 

for the entire district, and it was 

housed in the superintendent’s office and 

was the size of a large freezer chest,” she 

said. “There were no computers and phones 

were not automated. 

“Women all wore dresses and pantyhose, 

and there was no air conditioning. And although 

shorthand has become obsolete, it 

still comes in handy more often than you 

would think.” 

Breckenridge said she is looking forward 

to retiring in the near future and moving 

closer to her three grandchildren who live in 

Westerville. She wants to spend more time 

attending their events, as well as travel and 

visit as many national parks as possible. 

Master gardener training starts soon 

Beginning October 2022, Madison 

County will offer a Master Gardener Volunteer 

hybrid training to residents of Madison 

and surrounding counties. 

The Master Gardener Volunteer Program 

provides broad instruction in horticulture 

for enthusiasts of any skill level or 

interest who then volunteer their time assisting 

with educational programs and activities 

for Ohio residents through their 

local OSU Extension county office. Volunteers 

are not required to have gardening 

skills or knowledge, but a passion for learning 

about gardening and sharing this knowledge 

with others is a must. 

In addition to the training, a Master Gardener 

certification will be awarded after the 

completion of 50 volunteer hours at OSUE 

sponsored projects or approved activities of

and emergency medical vehicles on display 

on the grounds. Inside the Eby Youth 

Arena, service agencies and vendors will 

offer information and activities focused on 

safety topics like Stranger Danger, seatbelts, 

ham radio operations, emergency preparedness 

kits and family emergency plans, and 

safe ways to promote child development. 

New this year, the Jefferson Township 

Fire Department is offering a children’s fire 

obstacle course, and the EMA has purchased 

three sets each of fire, police and 

paramedic outfits for children. 

“The kids get to dress up like first responders 

and get their pictures taken,” 

Langham said.

researching and responding to horticulture 

questions from the public, and teaching gardening 

techniques to adults and children. 

There are many opportunities to obtain 

volunteer hours either with a “hands-in-thedirt” 

group project or as a “behind-thescenes” 

individual contributor supporting, 

non-physical activities. To maintain annual 

certification, Master Gardener volunteers 

are asked to provide at least 20 hours of 

service and complete at least 10 hours of 

continuing education annually. 

This program will be a blended format 

utilizing online, self-paced modules and inperson, 

hands-on laboratory sessions. One 

laboratory will be offered monthly, and participants 

are required to complete a minimum 

of seven. Laboratory examples may include 

visits to local nurseries, arboretums, 

trial gardens or turf farms. An introductory 

meeting will be set up with all applicants to 

answer questions, clarify the program, and 

set expectations. 

The cost of the course is $200 ($50 rebate 

when internship is completed). Applications 

and the course fee are due Sept. 10. Applications 

after the deadline are $50 extra.

Food at the expo is being handled differently 

this year. In the past, fire fighters and 

paramedics cooked hamburgers and hotdogs 

on site. This year, they get a break from 

cooking duties. Instead, each expo visitor 

will receive a ticket upon entry for a free 

slice of pizza and a drink provided by 

Cappy’s Pizza of London. Dairy Queen is 

providing free dilly bars while supplies last. 

“Because they were cooking all day, I felt 

like the first responders didn’t get a chance 

to interact with the kids as much. This way, 

they can do that,” Langham said. 

The theme for this year’s Safety Expo is 

“Not All Superheroes Have to Wear a Cape.” 

“The expo is a free, fun way to provide 

safety education and connect children with 

first responders,” Langham said.

Ag Day focus: tillage technology

Ag Day on Aug. 25, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at the 

Michael’s Building on the Champaign

The focus will be on prescriptive tillage 

technology, the next step in sub-field management 

with implements able to adjust on 

the fly while in operation. 

Specialists from Ohio State University 

will present information about the agronomic 

factors to consider with this technology 

and what might be a fit for your

on hand to discuss what their respective 

companies have to offer. Cargill will provide

and will give a presentation on the changes 

at their Sidney facility.

DOWLER 

Nicholas Scott Dowler, 34, passed away 

on Aug. 1, 2022. He adored and loved his 

dog, Harley. He enjoyed riding motorcycles 

with his brothers, hunting with his family, 

and enjoyed sports, especially Ohio State. 

He loved spending time with his niece and 

nephews. 

He was preceded in death by: his brother, 

Jared Von Driska; his grandparents; Uncle 

Chip and Uncle David. 

Nicholas is survived by: his mother, Lana 

(Joe) Von Driska; father, Randy (Terry) 

Dowler; girlfriend, Mindy Hatfield; sisters, 

Katie (Donny) Shoemaker and Chelsea (Jordan) 

Von Driska Miller; nephews, Brody, 

Barrett Shoemaker, Evan Miller; and niece, 

Lorynn Miller; numerous cousins, aunts,

HARRINGTON 

Cheryl Diane Harrington, 70, of West 

Jefferson, Ohio, passed away on Aug. 3, 

2022, surrounded by her loving family. 

Cheryl loved spending time with her 

family. She was an avid bowler and was 

very proud of bowling a 280. She won several 

bowling trophies. 

She was preceded in death by: her parents, 

Harold Charles Arnold and Elva 

Horne; sister, Janet Lewis; brother, Phillip 

Arnold; and sister-in-law, Darlene Arnold. 

Cheryl is survived by: her loving husband 

of 54 years, Harold Harrington; sons, 

Scott (Michelle) Harrington and Adam Harrington; 

step-daughters, Kathy Fout and 

Tina (Randy) Chafins: sister, Nisha King; 

grandchildren, Alyssa (Paul) Smathers, 

Adam Harrington Jr., Ashley Harrington, 

Morgan Harrington, and Nathan Harrington;

A funeral service was held on Aug. 10,

POWELL 

Jennie Ruth Powell was born on Oct. 30, 

1943, to Willard and Abby Brame of Minford, 

Ohio. 

She was preceded in death by her husband 

of 48 years, Ray E. Powell Jr., and her 

father and mother. She is survived by: her 

son, Duane, and his wife, Theresa; grandchildren, 

Lauren (Patrick), Conor, Carlie, 

Logan (Holli); great-grandchildren, Isabelle, 

Carson and Halle, all from West Jefferson,

Ruth was reunited with her savior the 

Lord Jesus Christ and Raymond on Aug. 3, 

2022. 

Ruth was a working mother and homemaker 

who spent over 20 years with Sears 

Distribution and ended her career as an administrative 

assistant with the Ohio Department 

of Corrections. She was a 4-H 

advisor of the Run & Ride 4-H Club and sat 

on the State of Ohio 4-H Advisory Board for 

many years. Ruth attended Harvest Chapel 

Church of West Jefferson for over 40 years, 

teaching Sunday School and supporting Vacation 

Bible School. She was an avid baker 

of pies, cakes and homemade bread, but 

everyone knew her for her chocolate chip 

cookies. 

However, her strongest passion was supporting 

her family. She attended countless 

horse shows, basketball and football games, 

track meets, and school performances. She 

loved to cheer for her son and later grandchildren. 

Ruth was easy to recognize at 

these activities as she never left home without 

her cowbell. 

Although Ruth’s departure brings sadness, 

her family was blessed for the time 

they had with her. They are comforted that 

she has left behind her earthly ailments and 

been reunited with her Raymond. 

The family received visitors on Aug. 8, 

and funeral services took place Aug. 9, both 

at Rader-McDonald-Tidd Funeral Home, 

West Jefferson, Ohio. Ruth was laid to rest 

at Hampton Cemetery, West Jefferson. 

GORDON 

Joan Lee Gordon, 87, of London died on 

Aug. 8, 2022, at her residence. Joan was 

born on Nov. 16, 1934, in Madison County, 

a daughter of Carl and Edith (Balsinger) 

Byerly. 

Joan was very much family-oriented, 

having Sunday dinners at her house every 

single week. She loved to do puzzles and crochet. 

She had retired from MATCO and 

then, eventually, she went back to work 

there. She enjoyed helping the disabled as 

much as she possibly could. 

She is survived by: her children, Edie 

Gordon and Harold Gordon; grandkids, 

Sheri (Tim) Witbeck, Elmer (Kelly) Rowland, 

Pauline Gordon, Kristy Gordon, Brent

COLLINS 

June Irene Collins of London, Ohio, traveled 

to her heavenly home on Aug. 9, 2022. 

She was born in Salyersville, Ky., to Dewey 

and Dora Borders on Aug. 10, 1932. She 

married her sweetheart, James, in 1951 and 

later moved to Ohio. In July, they celebrated 

their 71st wedding anniversary. 

June retired from Madison County Hospital 

where she worked as a nurse technician 

and was affectionately nicknamed 

“Junebug.” A long time and founding member 

of London Baptist Church, she took on 

various roles and duties there, eventually 

supporting her husband as a pastor’s wife. 

She spread her sweetness and light wherever 

she went. 

June enjoyed gardening, and her family 

looked forward to her frozen corn, world’s 

best coleslaw, buckeyes, and special punch 

every holiday. She was a hard worker, 

meticulous housekeeper, excellent cook and 

baker. She loved to read, do word search 

puzzles, and sit on her back porch watching 

wildlife in her yard. In the last few years, 

she could be found throughout the day 

scrolling through her iPhone, looking on 

Facebook for posts and pictures from family 

and friends. Cherished by her loved ones, 

she will be greatly missed…but not for long. 

June often talked about her future reunion 

with loved ones in heaven, especially her 

son, Dale. That blessed promise is what sustains 

and gives her family joy. 

June is survived by: her husband, James;

Nora Jean Hart of Hilliard, Ohio, died on 

Aug. 9, 2022, after a brief illness. Born on 

Nov. 27, 1949, to Jesse and Maxine (Houck) 

Hart, Nora spent her childhood in Madison 

County among a bevy of cousins before moving 

to the greater Columbus area to pursue 

her career as an R.N. 

Nora retired from Riverside Methodist 

Hospital after 40 years of service. In her role 

as a night shift nursing administrator, she 

met each challenge with a mix of empathy, 

level-headed problem-solving, and good 

humor. An avid reader, occasional gardener, 

and lover of animals, Nora could find the 

greatest adventures in the smallest of places. 

She gave sensible advice to her friends and 

loved her family fiercely. As a mother, she 

was always on her daughter’s side. 

Nora is survived by: her daughter, 

Kendra (Erin) Hart Daly of Dayton, Ohio, 

and her brother, Edd (Carla) Hart of 

Forsyth, Ga. She was preceded in death by 

her parents. 

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. 

Aug. 21 at Somerford Township Cemetery, 

1880 State Rte. 56, London, Ohio. A wake 

and potluck will follow at 4 p.m. at Cowling 

Park, 175 N. Main St., London. Memorials

William H. Harley, 62, of London died on 

Aug. 10, 2022, in his residence. Born on Dec. 

4, 1959, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was a son 

of Richard Arlen and Billie Jean (Papillon) 

Harley. William had spent his career as a 

printer/press operator and attended Grace 

Baptist Church in London. 

He is survived by: his wife and best 

friend, Janell (Breece) Harley; uncle, James 

(Deborah) Harley; sister-in-law, Debbie 

Dunlap Harley; cousin, Deanna Pitts; and 

many friends. 

William was preceded in death by: his 

mother, Jean; father, Dick; sister, Kimberly 

Sue Harley; brother, Richard A. Harley Jr.; 

and several aunts and uncles. 

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 

21 beginning at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist

Eldon “Perk” Markley, 96, of Springfield 

died on Aug. 11, 2022, in Springfield. Born 

on May 29, 1926, in Summerford, Ohio, he 

was a son of Herbert and Lina (McWhirt) 

Markley. 

A World War II Navy veteran, Perk had 

worked for Bauer Brothers in Springfield for 

35 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member 

of the former Summerford United Methodist 

Church and the Madison and Clark counties 

senior centers. In 2000, he was inducted 

into the London High School Athletic Hall 

of Fame. 

Survivors include: his children, Tom 

(Thelma) Markley of League City, Texas, 

and Cindy (Paul) Schneider of Springfield; 

grandchildren, Rachel Markley, Sam 

Schneider and Sawyer Schneider; greatgrandchildren, 

Rowan Schneider and Kinley 

Schneider; many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, 

Marjorie, six sisters, and one brother. 

Funeral services were held on Aug. 16 in 

Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory, 

London, with Pastor Wayne Stuntz officiating.

Williams, 98, of Pompano 

Beach, Fla., 

passed away on Aug. 

11, 2022. She was 

born in Byer, Ohio, on 

Dec. 19, 1923, to the 

late Earl N.and Jennie 

L. (Wallar) Gardner. 

In addition to her 

parents, she was preceded 

in death by: her son, Joe Williams; her 

husband, Dwight Williams; siblings, Rose 

Rinehart and John Gardner; in-laws, Chet 

Rinehart, Beatrice and Walter Morse, Raymond 

and Mary Adelia Lewis; and son-inlaw, 

Roger Starrett. 

Ollie graduated from Hamden High 

School in 1941 and was a member of the 

band where she played the trombone and 

played recreational tennis. She was married 

to her husband, Dwight, for almost 57 years, 

living on the family farm, Van Wert, Ohio, 

London, Ohio, experiencing being a “snowbird” 

in Lehigh Acres, Fla., for almost 25 

years, Dublin, Ohio, and then Pompano 

Beach, Fla. Ollie was a master seamstress, 

upholsterer, knitter and all-round crafter; 

she loved to create. 

In retirement, Ollie volunteered at 

Friendship Village of Dublin in the Arts & 

Craft department and specialized in the 

Christmas Fair. She loved to decorate and 

celebrate all the holidays throughout the 

year. Once she moved to Pompano Beach 

and joined the Court at Palm Aire Retirement 

Community, she organized a knitting 

group that donated warming hats and blankets 

for newborns. She was the secretary for 

the residents committee and helped involve 

the residents in the community. Ollie loved 

to socialize and be a part of a community. 

A loving, devoted and wonderful mother 

and grandmother, Ollie will be dearly 

missed by her family. She is survived by: 

her daughter, Nancy Williams of Westerville; 

Joyce Williams and John Lynch of Ft. 

Lauderdale, Fla.; Kathy Williams of Columbus, 

Ohio; daughter-in-law, Laura Hitchcock

SIMMONS 

Deanna “Dee” Gay Simmons, 80, of London 

passed peacefully at home on Aug. 13, 

2022, with her family by her side. Born on 

March 29, 1942, in Ironton, Ohio, she was a 

daughter of Andrew Ross and Anna Pearl 

(Baldridge) Brewer. 

Deanna graduated from South High 

School in 1960. After graduating, she 

worked for the State of Ohio. She then went 

on to work for Rockwell International in the 

aerospace industry when Rockwell shut 

down in Whitehall, Ohio. Dee moved to California 

and finished her career with Boeing 

from where she retired after 42 years. 

She enjoyed listening to country music, 

especially Toby Keith. She passed down her 

love of country music to her daughter and 

grandkids, which they plan to carry on in 

her honor. 

Dee is survived by: her daughter, Rhonda 

(Rick) Nelson; grandchildren, Megan (Ryan) 

Durbin, Zachary Childers (Makenna), and 

Kelsey Nelson (fiancée Brandon); greatgranddaughter, 

Lettie Lavonne Cottage; as 

well as many other family members. 

She was preceded in death by: her parents; 

brother, Lenville “Len” Gallie Brewer; 

and grandson, Thomas Andrew Childers.

William Jack Hart, 80, of Washington 

Court House, Ohio, died on Aug. 13, 2022, 

in St. Catherine’s Manor. Born on April 14, 

1942, in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of 

Denver Austin and Ruby Jane (Fogle) Hart. 

Bill retired as a welder from the City of 

Columbus, was in the National Guard, and 

belonged to London Baptist Church and Masonic 

Lodge 296. 

Survivors include: his children, Kimberly 

Hart, Scott Hart and Christopher (Kathy) 

Hart; grandchildren, Jamy (Dylan), Madison,

WILLEFORD 

Mary Helen Willeford, 97, a long-time 

resident of West Jefferson, Ohio, passed 

away peacefully at her home on Aug. 13, 

2022. She was born in Buffalo Valley, Tenn., 

on Sept. 5, 1924. 

As a child she survived a house fire, a 

flood which caused their home to float down 

river while they ran up the mountain to 

grandma’s house, and managed to graduate 

valedictorian of her eighth-grade class. At 

the age of 17, she met and married Charles 

Willeford and during World War II while 

Charles was serving overseas in the Army 

Aircorp, she worked at the plant in Oak 

Ridge, Tenn., where the atomic bomb was 

built. The family moved to Ohio in the early 

1950s for job opportunities. 

Helen was a homemaker, taking care of 

her six children, and a pastor’s wife. She 

loved all her grandchildren and was always 

available to babysit and spend time with 

them. She was known for her delicious pies 

and world’s best fried chicken. Helen was a 

member of First Baptist Church in West 

Jefferson, Ohio. 

She was preceded in death by: her parents, 

Mary Elizabeth and James Buchanan 

Moss; husband of 63 years, Rev. Charles G. 

Willeford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Reba 

and James Fuqua and Delia and Beecher 

Bilbrey; brothers, J. B. Moss and John Leftwich; 

and daughter, Donna Jo Willeford Intrieri. 

She is survived by: one sister, Linda 

(Charles) Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.); sister-in-law,
