Don’t Let Go!
Josephine Fairley shares her expert tips for retaining and maintaining
that glorious summer glow for as long as possible

It’s the summer we’ve never wanted
to say goodbye to. A ‘Go-Between’
summer, of parched fields and
golden landscapes and equally gilded
limbs. (If you haven’t read LP Hartley’s
book, or watched the Julie Christie/Alan
Bates film, I can’t recommend them too
highly, for conjuring up the baking heat
of a season like we’ve enjoyed in 2022.)
From a beauty perspective, though,
happily there are plenty of ways to
extend the glow for that bit longer.
First off? We all want to cling onto
that tan (faux or real – it’s been
almost impossible to stay pale and
interesting this summer). Counterintuitively
the best way to do that is
with a body scrub; scrubbing sloughs
away dead and dull surface skin cells,
revealing fresher-looking and more
vibrant skin beneath; simply add
a slick of oil (perhaps infused with
glimmery particles, see below), and
you’ll be glowing all over again.

OSKIA Renaissance Body Scrub,
£48 for 220g, always has a place bathside
in my house, but I remain a huge
fan of ESPA Detoxifying Salt Scrub,
£40 for 700g, which – cliché alert! –
really is a ‘spa-in-a-jar’, with its blend
of grapefruit, cypress and eucalyptus
oils. At the affordable end of the
spectrum, meanwhile, Sanctuary Spa
just launched a gorgeously fragranced
new bodycare collection in which you’ll
find Ruby Oud Natural Oils Coffee
Scrub, £12 for 300ml, which harnesses
the power of coffee grains to buff skin,
leaving you veiled in the most gorgeous,
exotic, nuzzleable scent. (The whole

And now for that oil slick – only
it’s not a ‘slick’, because these ‘dry
oils’ really do sink in super-fast,
enabling you to dress-and-go. One
of summer’s biggest bargains has
to be Revolution Makeup Glow
Revolution, £10 for 200ml, which
spritzes a fine, dewy, bronze-y gold mist
onto skin. Mid-priced is the classic
which basically invented this category,
Nuxe Prodigieuse OR Multi-Usage
Dry Oil, £19 for 50ml – it works on
face, body and is also lovely skimmed
through hair, adding a whisper of
tropical, summery white flowers and
vanilla – while at the oh-why-not-blowthe-budget?
level, you won’t find a more
luxurious and decadent treat than
Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Shimmering
Body Oil, £85 for 100ml, a white
floral, amber-sandalwood fragrance
which has the teensiest particles of
both platinum and gold. (A trick from
the late Diana, Princess of Wales: a
touch of shimmer up the shin-bone
creates the illusion of longer legs.)
