salon
In terms of keeping a tan ‘topped up’, my go-to is either
a gradual tanning cream or tanning drops, which can be
added to your favourite body cream or face cream. The
how-to is simple: add a dollop of your regular product in
the palm of your hand – more for bodies, obviously – and
dropper in the tanning drops; I start cautiously and then
build up the number of drops, as I become confident with
the level of bronzitude that a particular product delivers.
For faces, I like to use Balance Me Gradual Tanning
Drops, £30 for 30ml, about once every three days; it’s
98.8% natural – and can be added (more generously) to
body lotion, too. I’m also a fan of Green People Age Defy+
Liquid Gold Tanning Drops, £35 for 30ml, which just
did deservedly well in the Natural Health Beauty Awards.
Body-wise, James Read Click & Glow Body/£40 for
30ml, offers the most amazingly can’t-tell-it-from-real results;
you click the top and it dispenses the vitamin-enriched
tanning drops into your palm so, so easily. In terms of an
all-in-one self-tanner (rather than the D-I-Y options above),
I’d rather ‘build’ colour to achieve results over a few days,
rather than go for an immediate and sometimes unpredictable
level of tan. My absolute favourite gradual tanning lotions,
then, are Eco by Sonya Winter Skin, £26.95 for 200ml, a
luscious gel-cream formula which has the slightest caramel
tint, and is fah-bu-lous for legs, and ESPA Gradual Tan
Body Moisturiser, £35 for 200ml; ditto, this has lots of
‘slip’ when you apply, making seamless results easier.
Make-up-wise, matte foundations and red lipsticks and
smoky eyes will be seducing us soon enough, but they work
best when the light levels shift a bit more; right now, tooheavy
make-up and matte skin look as wrong as wearing
a pair of opaques. (Disclaimer: this magazine is written
in advance, and by the time you read this we might be
in galoshes and vests – but that’s England for you.)
So, in the past couple of years, I’ve somewhat moved away
from traditional powder bronzers to the creamy version,
finding them to deliver more true-to-skin results. There
