Little Garden seedlings are a fun way to start your gardening journey. Once your seeds have grown
into seedlings, you can start to think about planting them outside to enjoy. If you don’t have a vege patch already,
find an adult to help pick a nice, sunny, sheltered spot to create a new garden.
Or if space is short, pots or growing bags are great portable options.
Below are some of our top gardening tips to help you grow.
WHAT TO GROW
Nothing beats the satisfaction of
growing your own fresh food or
flowers, and no matter what the time
of year, there is always something
you can add to your garden.
This will give them the best chance
of growing big and strong, so you’ll
be enjoying them in no time! It will
also ensure you have an ongoing
supply of seasonal vegetables to
enjoy.
SPACE
Consider what seedlings you have
ready to plant, and make sure you
have enough space for them to
grow. Herbs such as coriander and
chives only require a small amount of
space, but veges such as sweetcorn
or cabbage will require much more
room as they grow.
PREPARE
Dig over the garden space to lift up
any hard soil and to help you remove
any old plants/roots that might be
hidden underneath. This will provide
a soft and welcoming garden bed for
your seedlings to enjoy.
SOIL
Just like your hungry tummy, soil
needs to contain plenty of food to
help plants grow. Add some Tui
Compost or Tui Sheep Pellets to the
soil for an extra boost. Make sure
you wash your hands after handling
any sheep pellets.
PLANTING
It’s best to plant your seedlings
earlier or later in the day. The
temperature is usually cooler at this
time, meaning your freshly planted
seedlings won’t be impacted by the
heat of the day.
Some plants make great friends,
and help each other grow. This
is called ‘companion planting’, an
example being carrots and onions,
which are plants with strong scents
that help drive each other’s pests
away.
WATERING/FEEDING
Plants need lots of water and plenty
of food to grow and to produce
yummy veges for us to eat. Water
your garden regularly in the warmer
months to keep the soil moist. It is
best to do this in the morning or
early evening. To feed your garden,
use a fertiliser to help keep its
tummy full. This will ensure your
plants have lots of energy to grow
big and strong.
