Hardware Protection
PROTECT AND SERVE
In an industry first, Vanquish Hardware Protection has recently secured third party certification
for both its hardware protection products. Below, Mike Sutcliffe, the company’s Business
Development Manager, talks to Total Fabricator about this ‘game-changing’ scheme...
TF: Mike, what is intumescent protection?
MS: All hardware installed on fire doors must be
fitted without compromising the integrity of the
assembly and this is critical where hardware,
such as hinges, locks and latches, flush bolts,
door controls and letterplates, is rebated into the
doorset.
Adding intumescent protection greatly reduces
the rate at which heat transfers through the door
as it expands upon exposure to it, preventing heat
transfer on the rebated hardware and sealing
voids created during the rebating process.
TF: What is the new third party certification?
MS: We have secured IFC (International
Fire Consultants) certification specifically
for hardware protection under the SDP20
Intumescent Seal and Hardware Protection Kits
scheme for both of our hardware protection
products – FlexiFire graphite-based and Fire
Protectors phosphate-based intumescent.
It covers initial testing and includes audits
to assess the consistency of production,
and certified products are printed to ensure
traceability throughout the production process.
TF: Why is third party certification so
important?
MS: Hardware protection products are not CE
or UKCA marked, and as a result there is too
much ambiguity in the test data. The problem is
intumescent materials are not made consistently
across manufacturers. Also, seemingly
identical intumescent materials can behave
very differently from one another, so there is
no minimum requirement for graphite content
in graphite-based intumescent. For example,
activation temperatures vary greatly, so one
might expand five times and the other 20.
Third-party means a consistency in
manufacturing the same product every time.
Another problem has been a lack of traceability
if something goes wrong with a product, but with
our third-party certification there is a paper trail
from each batch to the end product, so even after
a product has been installed the manufacturer
can be contacted if that product has failed to
function as specified.
TF: What impact will it have on the
industry?
MS: The Grenfell tragedy was a huge wakeup call
and people are following guidelines much more
closely now. Quite rightly, there is a greater sense
of responsibility and caution when specifying and
using materials on buildings and an increase in
requests for third-party evidence to prove the
suitability of them.
Left: Mike Sutcliffe. FlexiFire is a
graphite-based intumescent material
that offers high levels of expansion and
insulation, preventing heat transfer on hardware.
Customers demand traceability and peace of
mind that manufacturers enforce rigorous quality
control measures.
All our products can be manufactured with
traceability print that includes the material
brand, time and date of manufacture, the batch
number of raw materials and the IFC certificate
number, allowing the product to be identified after
installation and ensuring it has been tested to the
relevant standards. It really is a game-changer for
the industry.
TF: How has it been received so far?
MS: As the only UK protection manufacturer to
offer third party certification, as you can imagine
it has had an incredible reception from our
customers.
It now ensures our hardware protection products
perform as intended, ensuring life and property
are kept safe at all times. It’s something we’ve
been chasing for a considerable amount of time;
it has been a long and challenging process and
we are delighted that the IFC understood the
importance of including these products under a
third-party scheme.
With more than 30 years combined experience
in the passive fire protection industry, and as
the first standalone company dedicated to
intumescent hardware protection, we have
always led the way and been at the forefront of
the industry, and our third-party accreditation
scheme shows our continued commitment to
keep doing that.
