Do you have any personal goals for thenext 10 years?Well, certainly we will have completed A2level German by October.I want us to travel throughout Europe,Africa, and Scandinavia - we’ve spent alot of time in Western Europe, but to beso close to Prague or Croatia is awesome.We want to spend as much time as possiblein the natural world. If we were in theAdirondacks, we might have a target for acertain number of peaks to climb, but wehaven’t yet figured out a way to measureour hiking here.Professionally, I’m working to understandhow the phrasing of questions impacts ananswer. In order to foster collective inquirywe have to frame questions in a way thatleaves open all sorts of possibilities, doesn’tshut down thinking or make certain thingsoff limits for discussion. I hope to have timeto think about that more and understandhow it impacts the education we areproviding.What is the future of education, whatare the challenges for children, and howare you helping them deal with thesechallenges?That is such a complex question. Thetemptation is to send an advanced child offto do some additional online courses, but ithas got to be more individualized than that.At the same time, schools--especiallyinternational schools--have the opportunityto foster individual growth anddevelopment, while also preparing studentsas active agents for positive change withinthe global community and the communitiesthey will become part of. The excitingopportunity we find in international schoolsis that we can help each child value his orher own cultural heritage and languages,while ensuring each also learns to beknowledgeable and respectfully curiousabout the perspectives and experiencesof others. Having peers from around theworld brings nations and cultures to life ina very real way, and makes for a vibrantlearning community.Another of the biggest challenges we faceas schools - particularly in the social mediaage in which everything is amplified to theextremes - is mitigating anxiety and helpingstudents thrive personally. We need tohelp students to be present, to understandtheir emotional and mental states, andto mitigate any problems. There is aremarkable program called a “responsiveclassroom”, in which educators ask kidsquestions about their emotions, give themlanguage to use, accept whatever it is theyneed to share, and help them think aboutwhat their options are. We don’t formallyhave this program at ZIS, but we know wehave a responsibility to foster well beingalongside academic prowess, and thestudents at ZIS have an environment thathelps develop these incredibly sophisticatedtools and skills.Thank you for your time!Thank you so much.
